Goober, if you're reading this. Stop reading peoples signatures and learn how to use UnrealScript or something!!!! |

I dont really like the movie at all.
So this means I can re-create a scene from a movie, stick in some music and thats my map...? |

Quoting SKA-Diesel | Quoting red justice | My map (DM-RFU4-SPACEWALTZ) is ready for testing but not uploaded to ftp yet. It's based on the scene from the movie 2001 where the shuttle docks with the space station and Straus' Blue Danube Waltz is the only thing the viewer can hear. |
I thought the map had to be inspired by music, not be a map which happens to contain music. Im quite confused now. |
This map was inspired by music. If you are not familiar with the movie (possibly one of the greatest ever made IMO), music plays a tremedous role in telling the story (in fact, there are only 40 minutes of dialog in the whole movie). This movie scene draws parallels between old fashioned modes of transport (such as river traffic) and space transport by utilizing The Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Straus as one major character takes a shuttlecraft to an orbiting space station. The pacing of the scene and the dance of the spcaecraft all take their cues from the rhythm of the waltz.

I have the DVD, and I fell asleep during it...
the movie is not in question here.. whats in question is the fact that the RFU theme is music, not scenes from movies. So if your idea is allowed in the map pack then other mappers should be allowed to draw inspiration from movies.
EDIT
Sorry Im not going to keep posting if your gonna call me an A$$ for asking a question... Im not wasting my 1000th post on this. |

For me, I thought long and hard trying to think of a piece of music that could be translated into an interesting map. Some people love my maps, some people hate them but I can't motivate myself to make one unless I'm doing something unique or different (or challenging myself to take on a specific map form I haven't tried before).
I had been thinking of some type of low gravity map (maybe jumping from percussion instrument to percussion instrument). As I was listening to Strauss driving home from work one day I recalled the scene from 2001 and it struck me that this would translate wonderfully into a map for RF. Not a literal recreation of the movie scene but one inspired by the dance of spacecraft through the heavens. I thought that if I encased the entire map in push regions and lowered the gravity I could make the players "dance" through a low gravity gaming environment. With the players, and spacecraft all moving to the pace of the music, it would be like a ballroom full of waltzing dancers.
At the end of the day, some people will love this, some people will hate it, but it's the idea that I ran with. |

Ok, the bickering ends NOW. RJ's map is not based on a scene from a movie. Its based on the music in that scene.
So, no, you cannot just recreate a scene from a movie and have the soundtrack playing in the background. We did that already. In the particular scene that RJ is recreating, the music is more important that the scene itself.
So, if you wanted to create a scene from a movie that follows the same premise, your more than welcome, however, just putting soundtrack music to a DM won't cut it. |

we have already been trhough this with my idea and my idea went no where along these lines, in my opinion he rj has done a very good job of making the music the most important part of this map... |
We will be known by the tracks we leave behind |

No need to weigh in one side or another. The matter is sorted. SKA-Diesal and I have chatted on IMS. Moving forward we all are. |

Yes, I used to have this problem all the time before I upgraded graphics cards. What I ended up doing was (1) saving a lot, (2) switching to render current room only when manipulating things; and (3) switching to "render nothing" whenever I hit build.
Also, and this is the simplest: Try putting a GIANT (meaning larger than the main air brush) portal right down the center of the map (or segement it with 3 or 4). This stablaizes things while using RED and afetr you test it you may find that you can leave them in the map (giant portals don't seem to cause the hall of mirrors effect when they look upon each other).

Quoting DVL_IAC | Quoting mad_ferrit | Quote | Checking for holes...
Found 5 holes
Brushes: 583
Portals: 7
Rooms: 91
Faces: 12695/10500
Face Vertices: 59198/50400
Vertices: 15791/13650 |
Is it any wonder it's crashing? 12695 faces???
5 holes?!!! Fix them
Quote | Had to add 61 faces to fix ps2 tiling |
These need sorting out too.
If you're gonna take the pi$$ out of RED's limits then the least you could do is make sure the map is built solidly |
hmm i fixed 4 holes but idk how i would fix the fifth one because usually i just vertex edit to get rid of the holes but this 1 doesnt have a vertex anywhere near it... and for the ps2's... idk where they are... i originally had 131 but i changed something which brought it down to 61 but that didnt make any diff with the crashing.. will beinging it down more make any diff? |
ok i figured out its not the brushes/faces/verticies causing the map to crash its the particle emitters... is there a limit to the amount of p-emitters you can have in a map? because my map is mostly all lighted by torches wich are 3 p-emitters each and i have 40 torches which = 120 p-emitters +4 bolt emitters so 124 emitters total and adding 3 more causes red to crash...

RJ I cant even get the map to open, never lone tinker with it , RED crashs instantly when I try to open it, so I cant do any work on it, I can play it,I think I know what it is , I added a custom ambient sound, you can hear it when u play , But the weird thing is its not in the Vpp....
Any way Im not gonna frustrate myself over something I enjoy doing , I will calm down in time and go back , but for now Im staying away from RED ,or I may do sumthing stupid E.G THROW MY PC ACROSS THE F@#KIN ROOM !

Ill see you all for testing , Goodluck , and thanks for the help guys ,Speical thanks to mad_ferrit ,ur a ledgend Man! |
