Since when did I force my views on others? I just made fun of Canada, then to try to further the insane platform, tried to base WWIII on Canada. I'm surprised no one got as great a laugh out of it as expected (seriously, I used this joke with real people (well, people not online, and as such have the benefit of hearing it in speech) and they couldn't stop laughing for a while. Guess you had to be there).
LSF: I keep mentioning how great Australia is, how do people miss this? Australia is the best country you could go to. Aside from the great people, you have wonderous weather, vast variations in wildlife, and that great accent! What's to possibly hate about Australia? We all LOVE Australia! .
Do people want me to force my ideologies on others? Sure, I'm opinionated, however I don't force people to do anything. If you wanted to see me force someone to do something, imagine a Mafia Don showing up at your house. That's what I'd probably do to force someone to do something.
Ninja, why don't you enter? The basis of the competition is to get people interested in SP maps. Judging will hold nothing other than pride for people. Also, judging will take place mostly in L4Y's review section. Each map will have its review and whatever map's average review is best will be specially sent to judges. The judges shall use every method possible to review the map. It will be judged on:
Brushwork: how effectively did you use your brushes? 10%
Textures: did you texture everything? 10%
AI complexity: how complex is the AI? Can they effectively move throughout their areas? Are they able to intelligently use positioning? A lot of this will be left up to the RF engine, however your placement of nav/waypoints and scripting of AI is very important. 20%
Level Design: How complex and detailed is the level? Do all events work properly? 30%
Story: Does your level have some sort of story or background to it? 20%
Miscellaneous: Some other items that will be left up to the discretion of the judge. Will deal with how fun the judge felt the level, how well the judge liked the map, etc. 5%
Entrance score: Just for entering, you get a minimum of 5% score. This is just to balance the percentages.
Depending on how many maps are submitted (I don't know if I said that you could submit multiple), we'll pick the best 3 or 5 of them. I figure if you have the time to map them all, they should be judged. You must adhere to the 2MB compressed rule and your map must not be part of an unfinished project, ie you must make it from scratch. No mods, but as many custom textures and music files as you want, provided they fit within the size limit.
I should really write a final revision of the rules... |

I have a month to have it ready, so im sure i will have something by then.. but like I said, If you want to make an SP map, then why dont you? Im guessing you want others to make them aswell, but maybe if we had a taste of how totally awesome SP really is.. then we would be someway pursuaded to try and make some more.. |

You're half right. I do want more people mapping SP maps. However, I'm entirely capable of doing a lot of great SP work (did you download the HIC beta I posted here a while ago?). To become pursuaded, simply play that map once. The best thing is that it's not complete, so it can only get better (I'm currently in the phase of working it to player's requests, elsewise It's pretty much done). If there was anything I wanted, it would be an idea for this map (I decided against my original idea, as it was out of the scope of this competition (was planning a huge level, then realized it lacked a story. Reworked it, and found it lacked basic concept (was too big for story), adjusted to fit the story better, map didn't seem right). Currently I'm floating ideas about using a real-life experience to base my maps off of (I might even map an odd version of my school (have it laid out like a prison, etc) or my house (like a fortress)).
Also, if you still doubt the fun of SP, download any of the X5 sagas, Assault-Better, and the new level from ark_gamer (Bushwacked?). Those are potentially the best SP maps I can think of.
Actually, you have almost 2 months to finish. Because I kept redoing the rules, I was generous to give you another week and a half to map more and to adjust what you have. So, take your time and make your best sub-2 MB map you can think of. Actually, depending on how detailed your map would be, you could probably make a very good map in a series of weekends (which is when most of us would have time), say like 3-4. You'd then have a month to adjust little things, etc. |

Anyone else? I'd prefer at least 5 people in this competition, this way we can at least have finalists. |

After reading the rules I doubt that it's possible to create good singleplayer maps with that many limitations
Only because your slow connection the whole project should not suffer.
What does that mean that there is nobody really able to do custom textures?
Limitations on the resolutions or sizes of the textures is a bad move as well.
2 weeks time to finish the SP map(s) is way too less.
Some people can't even finish a multiplayer map in this time, as seen in the RFU projects.
Even if they get them finished the quality will suffer by these conditions.
Another problem is when some people continue working on old SP levels and take advantage of the short dev. time.
I'd say the limit should be around 10MB ±4MB. Enough space to put at least one custom music file (2MB max) and custom textures to the vpp.
Remember that SP vpp level files grow way faster than MP levels because of all the events, entities and because of the count of the .rfls in the vpp. |

You didn't read the entire thread, did you? The texture limits and all that were removed. Actually, all limits were removed except the 2 MB file size limit (which is reasonable, as it will be compressed under maximum settings, reducing the size to 1/5 of its original size . Finally, you have until 1 December, 2005 to submit your entry. That's almost over 2 months, plenty of time.
Also, you can include as many files as you'd like within your VPP. Also, you can include as many VPPs as you'd like, and even offer them to be evaluated as the same level (sort of like breaking the map into pieces). Then, NCF can combine all the VPPs together into one map pack for whoever does the "multiple parts per level" idea, which would be very convinient for broadband users. Then, he can combine all levels from all people into one uber-VPP, or however he did it for RFU. This is actually how RFU is, with multiple files for the entire project, or just one VPP. So, I "borrowed" their idea.
So, file limit stays (2M , however you can break your map between partions and upload them separately. Just label them "part one", etc. and include installation instructions to fully assemble the pack (you'd have to list the link to download VPView32 and VPBuilder32). So, isn't that workable? This way, I could have a standalone map that is part of a pack. Then, I can download the other files individually, & have fun with them that way, then combine them for more fun (or just download NCF's uber-VPP for <author>from the start). All other limits are removed, and the deadline is 1 December, 2005 (or December 1, 2005 for the Americans) .
Any other questions? It may feel like a chore, however it is always wise to read the entire thing. Also, to individually answer your music question, sure you could do that. To make it part of a pack, perhaps have it as a separate download and then place all the events in the level (should work without the file, correct? If not, place a false file and then have the user replace the file when making the uber-VPP). Also, old SP levels are strictly forbidden. This is mostly on the honor system, however there's ways to tell anyway (I won't list them, for then people could get around them). So, bottom line: you cheat, you will be found out. So don't even try. |

You can't say a file compressed with WinRAR will be 1/5 of the original size.
Many files can't get compressed any smaller because they already been compressed such as TGA or Wave files.
I don't want to read the whole thread just to find out the rules have been changed sometime..please edit the first post with all the information that is important to know.

I have an idea how users could easialy acces single levels without much trouble.
After all maps got submitted, somebody creates an additional level, a "SPMC lobby" room with switches on the walls or somehwere else..
These switches load the levels. There could be a list on the wall with the author names listed etc.
This lobby room can be called l1s1.rfl and could be ran as a mod.
This will force Red Faction to run the first level (the lobby) after the training (which you can skip) from the Menu.
This is gonna be really user friendly and avoids many questions and problems by the players.
It might be possible to place l1s1 in the single folder, too. Not sure if RF will use it then. But if there are other SP levels called the same you'll run in problems. A mod folder with an unique name seems nice to me.
Just some suggestions! |
