I am upfrading my computer and I am currently running an Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 and would like to upgrade to a new card so I can play the new games with the best possible graphical details. I was hoping to get some opinions.
Games I want to play are RA3
Crysis

Whats the rest of your system specs like?
Also what kinda cards can you get? If i remember rightly the card you have there is one of the older AGP cards? |

Considering the age of the GF5 series of cards (late 2002) and assuming your PC is the same age I should probably point out that even if you upgraded to the best AGP graphics card still available the rest of your PC would be hideously slow for those games, best you'd manage for something like Crysis is to be able to have every setting on its lowest in the smallest resolution possible... and thats if it runs at all.
I would recommend a new PC... a new graphics card for a 5+ year old computer is as close to wasting money as you can get. |

Take a look around at OCForums.com classifieds, someone was selling an eVGA 8800GT there for $95 shipped.
As far as current recommendation, I would not say the 8800GT(Unless you can find it for $110 or lower). As much as I hate to say it, I'd grab an ATi Radeon HD4850 if I was on a somewhat strict budget.
You can pick up a nice Core2Duo rather cheap from NewEgg.com or ZipZoomFly.com. You can also try Frys, and other places of the sort.
On the cheaper side of things, Phenom II is a good more on a budget build. You can grab a Phenom II 920 for about $190. The performance compared to an i7 is of course not close, but i7 will also cost you about $250+ more. (Up to the budget minded if it's worth the extra bit of performance for the $$$)
It's great budget wise though for a future proof'd quad system if you are building right now. If you are willing to wait though, AM3 should be completed soon within the next quarter of this year. In which you will see better memory controllers on the cpus ^^ |

I would get an EVGA GTX 260 SC in 55nm. Good value and the absolute best customer support. Their warranty covers overclocking 3rd party coolers and a step up program. life time warranty too. |

... thus the reason to grab a GTX 260 Core 216 NON preoverclocked card.. Why pay the extra $$ when you can easily overclock yourself with eVGA Precision? $280 vs $230.... lol, should be obvious
But for the amount it costs, the 4850 is more budget friendly.... Only need a GTX 260 216 if you want to have something overpowering a card like the 4870.
It would be about $145 for a Sapphire Technology's Radeon 4850 vs $230 for a GTX 260 216.
I'm just trying to state that for a budget, the 4850 will be the best buy. For a good card under $200. |

Yeah, was in the US for a few weeks. Been trying to get PC up and running again, was supposed to be down for 3-4 days for an upgrade but got half way through and work exploded, Xmas/New Year and then out of the country... jet lagged today so just mucked about with the forum template a bit.
Going to be spending a little more time here now doing the bits that need doing. I've got a 2 year old todo list that I'd like to start clearing |

Yeah for the games you want to play 512mb of ram isnt going to be enough.
Nor the processor |

Yea, you are going to want at a MINIMUM an AMD dual core(Recommended would be a Intel Core2Duo) and bare minimum of 2GB of RAM(Due to RAM prices it's advised to grab 4GB )
As for your question Doc, no. Neither are.
Intel makes alright boards, but nothing spectacular. I'd advise you take a look at Gigabyte or ASUS with a P45 chipset(Non DDR3) and an E8400 (around $160, can be had in Classie's for about $130)
Currently at this point in time DDR3 offers no improvement over DDR2. DDR2 is actually faster in many tests.
If you are going to list such an outrageous board you may as well try boasting a want for a Core i7 920 at the very least. As far as going Core i7, unless you plan on doing SLi/Tri-SLi (3 physical cards)/Quad-SLi (4 physical cards) there is no real performance gain from i7 outside of already having a good Core2Quad. (i7 shines with tri-SLi solutions) |

the sc and up are cherry picked and they over clock better. so to me it's worth paying the extra for that extra OCing capability. Second I wold not buy a 4850 coz the 216 core 260 beating the 4870 hands down for most games and apps.<<< note i said 4870 not 4850 like you did. plus the radeon consumes more power and is noisier and runs hotter.
but this is just my opinion with some facts.
It all comes down to the person who is buying it and what kind of money they have to spend and what games they play, coz i do know the radeons play certain games better that nvidia and vise versa.
This could all be irrelevant because he said he has an FX5200 and for what I know they mostly came in AGP.
if thats the case then, ya bugged |

Yes the GTX 260 216 rips the 4870, that's a fact, however yet again I will state for a budget the 4850 is good
Emphasis is on the BUDGET! lol |

lets assume that money is no object at this point. LOL well up to about 3 K I can have one custom built or I can buy one. What would you guys suggest if I were going to buy a new PC? Keeping in mind that I want to play Crysis, Fallout 3, and RA 3. |

Fallout 3 and RA3. Don't really need a beast of a machine to run. I play fallout 3 on my laptop, with almost all the settings on highest, 8x AA, High res.
Red alert is even less intensive, Crysis ya I can run it on med, at around 25-35FPS on my laptop... No need to spend too much money. Listen to sobe... He knows his CENSORED
Id go out and get a intel quadcore.... 4gb of ram, then spend a bit of money on a decent graphics card. No point in buying some crazy 3 grand pre built system when you can put it together yourself.
Or just get a gaming laptop like i did |
