erm rad, sobe was recommending the 4850 like 3 times now. What is so hard to understand with it LOL j/k
I know that the 4870 is a fantastic card, the 4850 can't be much different (don't really know about that)
I'd get one.
When I was about to buy it, I've done a lot of comparision with the GTX260, but in the end the GTX260 lost in many points vs. the 4870. The GTX260 surely is faster at some games, but not on every, and not on all conditions.
And pricing is different as well.

Particularly, I'd like to point out the GTX 260 Core 216 is the one that tops the 4870 in just about everything, not the older GTX 260 with 192 sp's.

As far as I know, the 4850 IS the 4870, simply downclocked. Don't quote me on that, but I believe that is what Brollocks concluded on OCForums between the two cards.

Doc, it's all fine if you aren't keeping up with the latest and greatest, I am in no way putting you down for that. Simply showing you alternatives to what you were looking at for much better pricing.

radviper_rf, if you are to build a brand new rig right now, I would definitely point you to Core i7. They are consistently overclocking with ease to 4GHz..

If I were to build a brand new rig right now with new core parts(If I did not have a LGA775 mobo and cpu) it would look pretty much like this:

Intel Core i7 920

GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD4P LGA1366

G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2G 240-Pin DDR3 1600 Triple-Channel

EVGA 01G-P3-1280-AR GeForce GTX 280

Personally that's what I would go for for the main components. Gigabyte has already wowed the enthusiast market since the P35 chipset, even farther with P45, and now the EX58.

(PS, that will rip through Crysis)

has radviper told us how much he wants to pay for new PC hardware yet?
The stuff that sobe posted really is expensive high-end hardware, and not recommended for the nowadays casual player. (not at all if you want to play Crysis, RA3 or Mirrors Edge)
Even a HD3750 does handle Crysis with ease. (50fps, med detail, 1680, 4xAA)
A GTX280 is extremly too much power for any game (and also draws extremly a lot more power from the PSU than an HD4870) , and will also cost much less in future.
It's for the enthusiasts which upgrade their PCs with expensive hardware quite often anyway.
So better stop promoting enthusiast hardware that barely anyone can or want to afford and give realistic suggestions at least. No wonder many people just dumb down to consoles.
There always is something better to buy, but balance between price, performance and need should be even.

I have yet to find a game my whole PC cannot play on ultra high.
AMD x2 64 6000+
4GB (physical )
ATI HD4870 OC version 512MB

with my setup I did not buy too much, and not too less. Everything works out well and nothing is wasted, and will most likely play any other new game of 2009 as well, but I will surely upgrade at some point because it will be easily affordable.

I was gonna have a guy build me a monster gaming rig for about 2500 with all the bells and whistles but then my wife hit me over the head lol. I would like to keep the cost under 1200 dollars if possible. I was looking at the quad core's with about 4-6 gig of ram and a decent gfx card to run fallout3 and RA3 and Crysis. my wife found a decent HP that had all the specs that I really need for under 800 bucks.I want the entire gaming experience instead of having to run all my games at the lowest possible setting and missing out cause the action is too slow.

The stuff I listed for you will cost under $1,200 mark as you are wanting and will keep you satisfied for quite a while.

Yes it is more of enthusiast hardware, however, if he were to purchase it, he wouldn't need to upgrade for quite a while

As for affording, if I didn't already have a C2Q setup (Going to test 4GHz stability next week ) that is exactly what I would have bought lol. It's more of something like, future proofing yourself for a while.

But if you use either or the slightly slower video cards, be that a GTX 260 216 or a Radeon HD4870, either one will do you well as good single GPU solutions. I in fact love my GTX 260 216.

As far as RAM is concerned radviper, if you are not going Core i7 ( Nehalem ), then I suggest you stick with 4GB in dual channel. More than enough and perfect amount really. 6GB in triple channel if Core i7.

Just to give you a realization of it, my GTX 260 216 handles Crysis, Warhead, Mirrors Edge, CoD4, Left 4 Dead, Warhammer 40k Dawn of War 2, Fallout 3, and any other currently available game at rather high settings with ease.

So no, you do not need the GTX 280, it's just there to rip open any current game xD

Corsair 850TX

That should be perfectly fine for that and more. Running a Corsair PSU you should be able to run a 750TX even with ease. Hell, even a 620HX probably lol

awesome. now i decide whether i save up for all this, or just get a mobo & processor cheap (mobo & processsor are all i have left to get)

Wait wait, if you are referring to the E8400 and P45-UD3P Gigabyte board I showed you, then grab the Corsair 650TX for $99, it's a Seasonic unit rather than a CWT.

You can give me a budget through PM or so I can help you set up the best "bang for buck".

I listed what I did for radviper due to the extensive budget he has.

If both of you, however, are willing to wait. The 3rd quarter of this year Intel's Lynnfield core should appear(Core i5). It will be the "mainstream" Nehalems. And at a better pricing than the current Nehalem cores.

Keep in mind, both Core i7 and Core i5 will use different sockets. Soooo, yea....

Sobe, did you noticed that A LOT of the reviews for the EVGA 01G-P3-1280-AR GeForce GTX 280 stated that the video card gets too hot. I can only see one down side to that...will eventually die on you. Of course you can add a fan to it to help cool it down too but who wants to go through all that trouble.

Most of the people who review items such as video cards on NewEgg have a fancy looking case with horrible cooling..

Grab a CM Stacker 830, Antec P180/182, Antec 900, etc. Do some cable management, and voila, no probs.

You seriously cannot improve graphics card cooling THAT MUCH just by improving case cooling and better cable management.
Of course case air flow needs to be good, but you should always be able to run the graphics card without a PC case also.

Frank is right. The GTX280 gets too hot, and on top of that, it draws too much power. And the GTX280 also is extremly LOUD. (GTX280 5,0 Sone max, HD4870 1,2 Sone max stock. LOL...) I'd never get one of these....
I told you there were several reasons to me to not get a GTX260/280.

It's too new technology thrown on the market which actually isn't matured enough. They have rushed released it, to (try to) keep up with the 4870x2, and well, they partly failed.

if you want to improve cooling, do something like this:
http://www.casemodgod.com/ModGuides/HSFfunnel/hsf_funnel.htm

yo sobe you missed your 3000th post!

and this is my 800th!

I... would just stick with some Yate Loons in Push/Pull config.

Radviper, this is rather outdated, but,
http://www.buildeasypc.com/hw/howto/assemblepc.htm

It should give you a guideline for a custom build. It's all pretty much, if it fits, it probably goes there, lol. Don't take that beyond the concept though.

Im sure you have a techie friend somewhere around you though that can help if you really need hands on help.

radviper_rf when building a PC it's almost impossible to connect the wrong cables in the wrong place since they can only go where they fit.
I bought a "Building PC for Idiots" book which I never read. I just recalled what the tech had done to my Gateway PC when the motherboard had fried and went from there. He explained it to me [he was eating his dinner] so that I wouldn't have to pay somebody else to do it for me.
I've built 4 so far, nothing fancy. Just enough to play the newer games. My PC is way way outdated now. I'm still running a nVidia 6800GT (AGP) when we all know that you can buy a way faster video for less money when it's a PCI express. When the new Red Faction comes out, I will have to build another PC.
