should I look for a new video card already or no?
I need to get a new hard drive
so I was thinking why not go get a new mobo, Athlon 64 processor, new card
e-pinions? |

Not really out of date, but it depends a bit on what you demand. The 9800 can still play most new games with a decent FPS, allthough maybe not on the highest settings in all. Both ATI and NVIDIA will have new cards out later this year, so it might be wise to wait a bit. The prices on the top cards now might get lower. If you want a new mobo, you will have to decide if you want PCI-Express or AGP slot for the videocard. If you go for PCI-E, you will have to get a new vidocard anyway, since the 9800 is AGP  |

Yes, everything is out-of-date about 3 months after it hits the mass market.
So let's say you just got the ATi Radeon X850XT PE or an Nvidia GeForce 6800Ultra. Doing pretty good you think? Well your wrong, your card WILL be out of date shortly.
But, I suggest only upgrading when it's a must. And you shouldn't spend an AlienWare price on your pc building. |

Unfortunately for you your graphics card is now a mid-range/low-end card UNLESS you have the 9800 pro which is still a fairly decent card.
Look on the bright side i have an X850XT Overclocked past an X850XT PE

That is the biggest load of balls i've ever heard first of all my card outpergorms 2x6600GTs and 2x6800GTs it is outperformed by about 1/2 by 2x 6800 Ultras but in games it isn't noticeable, i have full graphics on in HL2/CS Source and a resolution of 1280-1024 and i get an FPS of 140+, Yes that is all graphical settings set to highest.
2x 6800 Ultras would get and fps of 175+ in this situation which you wouldn't notice at all in games.
Get your facts straight before you post... 
(By 2x i meant that the GPUs were running in SLI)
And you say minimum/ You can run HL2 on the low-end graphics cards. |

thats true. i run an ATI 9550 w/256mb(which isnt a great card) and HL2 runs superclean for me on high. might have something to do with the rest of my hardware tho.  1Gpc2700-DDR,AMDathalon2800-but thats not that great either, so i doubt it.

Yes but if the PE was overclocked then it would be faster. And just to let you know the X850XT is a tad slower than the 6800Ultra with neither overclocked. With both overclocked the 6800Ultra should be in the lead.
And yes I have eyes but they are dazed from battling in RF |

Wrong Again, In testing the Non PE version overclocked further then the PE and i know the X850XT is a tad slower but Nvidia and Ati's cards perform differently in different games, ie: In Doom 3 the 6800 Ultra will get a 20-40 FPS increase then the X850XT (Neither Overclocked) But in HL2/CS Source, The X850XT will out perform the 6800 Ultra by about the same margin (20-40 FPS)Not that it matters because both of them hit well over a hundred in games.
I also want to state that SLI is a waste of money as you pay 2x as much for an increase of less than 1/2 in perfomance.

I'm only running a Radeon 9200 and it performs ok with HL2 and most others ...suits me til i do a full upgrade..... atm its only P4 1.3 with 256 ram, but it works, next step will probly be at least 3 gig AMD |

I AGREE with you there
And I also agree with Garner. My latest upgrade will be a GeForce 6600GT. Next, within a year or so I will upgrade to a 6800GT or Ultra. |

I say heck with the 2005 Server Fundraising, it's time for a "Get Garner a Real Video Card" fund
Anyway, you guys are all funny about fighting over cards. Deus, I wouldn't upgrade yet. The world is going PCIe and by spending the money to get a new AGP your kinda wasting it. Especially if it's time to upgrade already. |
