Quoting Assaultman | ... you will probably respond with a harsh comment, then i will probably respond with a harsh comment ... and then this thread is 9 pages long |
You've already stated some good points. Technically you're already in the debate. Does it really matter how harsh will be the next comments and how long will be the thread.
Some people want to get the exact same feeling with MW and RF. I wonder why. They'd better play RF. A total conversion doesn't need to be an exact replica of the game it copies. Of course, we can discuss that point of view. |

Haha. What a joke.
I say congrats to RedFrog and all the hard work he's put in!!
Yeah OK MW may not be perfect but Gees give the guy a break - He has done more than anyone 2 my knowledge for the RF community with mods, maps, and many things more.
MW will run on a fairly low end system and allows you to tweak the video settings up or down way more than RF can.
But at the end of the day if you're a hard core RF Fan and want a bit more than the old 1024x768 then MW is the way to go. I'm getting 130 average FPS at 1920x1200 with everything maxed out. Sometimes it gets as high as 220 fps!!
The performance and quality of the graphics surpasses the original RF under the UT2004 engine. Dual core processor support, surround sound, higher resolutions for wide screens etc. At least your new Nvidia card will work with MW.
Well done RedFrog!! Keep up the excellent work. I can only hope that the small RF community can work as a team and help to support what is already an awesome project.
Many Thanks for the massive amount of hours that you've poured into MarsWars.
Who knows might even get some UT players playing RF

Thanks MadMac.
I've got used with it to not be respected here as an artist who wants to help the community. I can fill pages of files, make many people happy playing Red Faction but it's all forgotten quickly. But I don't regred it. I had and have a great time here on L4Y with you guys. You should never forget how good this place is, even if we sometimes have some "flamewars"
But well, there are always a few people that like what I done, and I appreciate it.
Quote | A total conversion, in the computer gaming sense, is a mod (short for "modification") of an existing game where the end result bears little resemblance to the original on which the conversion was based. Many games provide players with the ability to edit the game's many elements: levels, sounds, enemies, and so on. Most modifications are limited in scope, resulting in a partial conversion. |
and btw TC or not TC, I don't care about it at all.
I'm sorry if MW doesn't please everybody. I'm still in the learning phase, and it will never end.
Everybodies life is a learning phase. It keeps becomming better, what you are seeing is the latest release and trust me I always have a really bad feeling about to see people playing the old version when there is a new, better one on my machine. People are complaining about flaws and issues that already been solved.
I'm happy that there are people who enjoy Mars Wars. It's part of my life |

Quoting rawrzz | The best way to go about "pleasing everyone", would be to model it after stock RF and then adjust things slowly, rather than releasing a total conversion which isn't actually a conversion. |
Why exactly is Mars Wars not a total conversion? It may not be 100% accurate to the original RF, but it still fits the bill as a TC mod. Besides, IMO RF's weapons are horribly unbalanced, though I don't complain because its just how the game is. I think REDFROG just fixed what should have been fixed in v1.1 of RF. |

Uhm probably..
The damage system of MW2.0 is completely different to the one of Red Faction. The damage system of MW1.0 is different again.
I have missed some important info how the damage system RF works and made Mars Wars damage values up by my own feeling. The damage for the handgun in MW for example is a completely different number than the one in RF hence the armor in RF has a different behaviour.
I have fixed all this, removed the hit animations, decreased gravity, optimized jump height (no more bunnyhopping), player speeds... it only needs to be released, but the release of MW2.1 is groping in the dark. |

Quoting rawrzz | ... But understand when you butcher the automatic weapons in the game, you greatly overpower the hitscan ones. In MW, I only ever use the sniper rifle. Just to give you some idea of how overpowered hitscan weapons are in MW, I can 1v10 the godlike bots using just the sniper rifle in warlords. I'm not even joking. The best way to go about "pleasing everyone", would be to model it after stock RF and then adjust things slowly, rather than releasing a total conversion which isn't actually a conversion. |
i actually dunno about that ... the automatic weapons seem just as damaging as they always have been ... but thats just me ... the only thing i think off is maybe accuracy a bit ... well, i guess they do seem a little weak in some occasions ... but i dunno if its just because the bots are better at seeking out armor and health better than regular players or if its because the mouse sensitivity is different ...
Also there is significant AI differences in which it seems that novice bots can be harder than godlike bots at times ... the deal is that the AI is geared to the UT2k4 weapons in which you had to lead your target for most weapons ... so a novice bot would shoot directly at you where as a skilled bot shoots in the direction you are going to be ... so when most the weapons have a pretty much instant hit ability ... the crappy bots become good
... or at least it seems that way, really only redfrog could confirm my suspicions :/
overall the biggest difference ive noticed between MW and RF is the mouse sensitivity ... but thats changeable in the menu ... though its hard to get that exactly the same as well, i tried and i still don't have it right |

Somehow the mouse control in UT2004 is far better as in Red Faction. I am good with the railgun in Red Faction, but even better in Mars Wars.
The bots know how to use the weapons. They know when they are using an hitscan weapon and when not.
Only projectile weapons are calculed by bots by speed, distance, (player dir and player velocity)=calculated predicted player position where the projectile should impact.
Novice bots are better than Godlike ones? Come on that can't be true!
They run at least half as fast as godlike ones and their aim is slower than anything. |

To be fair REDFROG, The rail in RF has pinpoint precision. You have to acually hit the person. In MarsWars, it has a huge slug that kills... |

Ya, I'm better at the rail in MW because, I've noticed, when you happen to miss by a few feet or so, the body still explodes, lol. In RF, pin point precision is the key, if you miss by a few feet, you either MISS or leave them with 6 hp,

Nah, the railgun of Mars Wars is simple line tracing.
Code | Trace (HitLocation, HitNormal, End, Start, true, , HitMaterial); |
But you are right by saying that railgun hit easily, even off the model
Red Faction actually is the game that has a bounding box line for the railgin tracing.
I just noticed that there are no real hitboxes in UT2004. I thought bones were used for hitboxes because you can specify damage taken reduced on specific bones.
Red Factions characters use 3 collision spheres for hit detection. (you can test this when you shoot someone between his legs for example, he will get hit ) UT2004 semms to only use the Cylinder collision around the character. Damagezones are there, though. The game searches for the nearest bone. Thats not really what I wanted, I thought UT was more advanced in such things (however this is the most fair way to have the same hitzone for all playermodels, but who cares about that when fat characters are easier to see..kinda stupid everyone (but me) uses thin female characters because they think they cant be hit that good...)
Now hm..I will see if direct model hits are possible because the cylinder collision is..bounteous.
edit.
So yea it all starts in UnrealPawn Code | bUseCylinderCollision=True | But I can't imagine how traces would hit without it. Damn. |

In RF you sometime hit and do no harm, due to lag. |

The RF railgun is simply hit or miss, when a player is left at 6HP or more that means they had full or super armor/health. The railgun isn't a guaranteed one-shot-one-kill weapon. The fusion, on the other hand... |
