I got Vista Ultimate free from work. I now no longer want to ever go back to XP. It's a superior system on all levels. Runs perfectly, never had a problem.
I have an itchy, irratable rash. It's RED.

I noticed about IE, IE freakin' opens by itself on occasion, lol. I know quite a bit about computers, and knowing NOT to use IE is a major plus! XD

Knowing not to use IE should be the knowledge you first know Plus, see the MicroSoft logo on it? That means, now accepting all viruses

OK Garner, I'' try FireFox for at least a week. I'll see if I can get use to it. I'm using it right now.
As far as Opera, I don't like the way the windows are. Maybe the paid version is better but I refuse to pay for an Internet Browser.
But that still won't fix my problem that I now have with a desktop theme that I don't really want.

giggles - working in the IT industry I've found that 99.9% of virus infections are user caused.

Not that you go out of your way to get yourself infected but the reason you got infected is because you did something wrong.

I've not used an anti-virus at home for close to 2 years now with XP, here at work I've been using Vista for the last 6 months with no AV (because the office version of NOD32 broke Vista all those 6 months ago).
umm nice to know that you do not usa an anti-virus. i'm wondering thought do u also not use any anti-spyware too? if so then may i call you the IDIOT of the year? you do no that no fire wall alone is going to stop a virus from getin on your pc. it just stop spyware from reporting out to it's master..... i should know being someone who is PAID to hack into sacure systems (not really but my college profecer was, thing i'll have him reply to this threed wont be till thirsday though. I PROMICE!) Dodn't worry, i won't take any thing thats not of intrest to every body ...... sorry people but all his p0rn videos i'm sure you'v all already seen

Seeing as you don't know Garner's knowledge in the computing field, I'd just call you the biggest idiot of the year, no offense, just do some research on things first. Also, just to cue you in on something, if you merely go to trusted sites as such, then you won't have to worry about spyware or viruses. Now, if you follow Garner's points made, I can garauntee myself you won't get virus infested. I currently have my 2nd machine that is running Vista with no A/V, and it's been doing fine without an A/V for at least 6 or 7 months. I do do virus checks using a site and so far it has come up with no viruses since my latest reformat 6 or 7months ago.

I'll also tell you something though, I've learned from my father who worked as a software engineer all I need to know about computers and software management and data collection. And no, he didn't do work for small companies, he's even worked for a section of MicroSoft and other large companies. From what I've learned I've expanded over time, and things said such as, "If you don't have an antivirus you are stupid and are going to get a virus." In my experience, with network management thus far, even the most secure servers using the "best and latest" of business antivirus can get a virus. And, unless you are using either KasperSky or Nod32 on your pc, you will probably have a virus without knowing it yet anyway. Unless you are using business grade a/v of some other sorts, which I kinda doubt.

Btw, FireFox rox your box!!!

P.S.
Darth, if you want to make it in the field of computers, try to type proper english first, lol. Even spellcheck will help if you must use it

Quotes remove, they weren't needed as the last post was the one being quoted. Call it clutter removal.

First time I've ever quoted so much... anyway i can guarantee i know as much as garner and you when it comes to PC security. like for instance about 75 percent of the world viruses spy-ware and what not are program to attack Microsoft directly, why because over 75% of the world computers are running with Microsoft based products. how ever this does mot mean that using a Linux only system will keep you safe. and i don't care who you are but no fire wall alone will protect you. case in point i have three PC in my house. but i''l bet you money that the PC I'm on right now in the only one that the world can see. however i think I'll have my college professor explain it to you on thursday, believe me he will have a field day with this one.

Good, because you shouldn't overestimate your own ego. I'm willing to bet you anything that Garner has more knowledge than you and myself combined. I don't think Unified's security would have been too great otherwise If you don't know what Unified is/was, then nvm.

And just because you think a virus can infect a pc doesn't mean it will. The main point is, if you are smart and know what you are doing around the net, you won't be compromised with such a worm. Simple as that. Such as, if I simply viewed Levels4You.com for this entire computer's life, and no other site, would I get a virus? If you take into account what IT professionals have sites for that are meant to show what you can do to prevent a virus, then there would be no reason for this endless rant about viruses, etc.

In fact, to do a quick proof positive of what I mean, take a look at my pc that still has no A/V installed. Why is it still unaffected? I do download via it, from levels4you.com as well as redfactionview.net and ocforums.com. Why, because I don't do anything ignorant on it like use LimeWire, Torrents, or visit warez/pron sites. It is merely for gaming and as a local server.

My college class was a little busy tonight so i could not get my professor to reply to this thread. maybe next week will work better but by then he might not need to. any way he did say

"no fire wall alone will ever be enough protection, sure it might stop viruses and spy-ware from entering your computer thought a closed port but not and open one (such as anyone using an instant messaging program or playing an online game), nor will it stop a virus that you get from you friend CD that he burned for you"

which reminds me... Sobe i know you where on my MSN messenger this past week and you might want to do an anti virus scan, I'll bet you money you have the smithfrud virus, it's not really harmful just a pain in the but all it does is redirect you web browser to an fack antivirus site and makes that it's home page. if it hasn't done so yet give it time. once it does show it self it a pain to remove, said thing is it's an old virus.

this is why i have two PC in my house one for games and I.M.ing and another for (I'm not saying) that is so well hidden it would take the most expert hacker at lest four days to find it.... you can't stop them but you sure can slow them down.... maybe even to the point to where they just give up

P.S. one last thing my professor said to me and the rest of the class tonight.

"the best way to prevent you self from getting a computer virus, is to never buy a computer to start with."

Sorry mate, no virus on either my main nor Vista machine. I think you got it from elsewhere. I'd love to hear what your professor has to say though, nothing like a little input.

Btw, you say your computer is hidden, by what? Having a custom proxy done? Bouncing your IP from another location? Just curious as to why you keep saying it's hidden.

Now, don't take this the wrong way, but I don't believe an "expert" hacker would be in need for your system. Not honestly anyway. Depends on the type of black hacker he is and what he does it for. You may want to try to contact Ruiner_Zer0 before you say things can and cannot be hacked. As I can pretty much say he would be the one capable enough to do it, easily. He can also most likely give you in-depth reasoning behind why people that know what they are doing without an A/V don't get viruses.

As per the CD thing with a friend, very true, that CAN happen. However, it would be in hopes that you trust that person wouldn't do such a thing. Plus, that would be an "external" source of a virus contraction. If your computer was simply used for "office" work alone and doing what you are suppose to be doing, you shouldn't get a virus.

I dont sit here and say I'm OK without an AV for the fun of it... everynow and then I do install one of the free trials out there just to confirm - they never find anything.

Currently have the 30 day trial of NOD32 - the best hands down if you need an AV.

The only reason AV programs exist is because your average computer user does things that will get their PC infected if the AV wasn't there. Heck even so called IT pro's do it from time to time on a bad day...

I've just not had a bad day in years

I see no reason to pay for AV, Spyware, Malware, Whateverelseware scanners when I dont need them.

I have my little set of sites I like to visit... thats it.

As for Firefox vs Opera...

a) Frank - Opera is free. Has been for ages now - a few months after Firefox was originally released they changed.

I actually bought Opera WAAAY back with Version 5. Back then paying for a browser that was leagues ahead of IE was a damn good investment.

I still consider Opera to be better than Firefox for the following reasons...

It renders faster - from cache rather than requesting the page from the server again. In the time it takes a Firefox/IE user to hit the back button and load the page, I'm already 10 pages further back in my history...

It remembers form data as you press backward/forward between pages. Firefox does this as well but with an annoying dialogue window asking if you'd like to do it or not... arrrgg... go away I didn't hit back for the fun of it.

Mouse guestures.
Until you've used them you have no idea how powerful they are.

Firefox still has a clunky feel to me. Not as polished yet.

Opera's built in mail client. Rocks. 'nuff said.

Does firefox scale everything on a webpage? Last time I tried it only scaled text - pictures stayed their original size - Opera scales everything... pictures included. From a developers point of view thats GREAT because you can zoom into a webpage to find little issues... or even if you come across a little picture that you'd like to zoom in a bit to see better... Opera will happily scale the image for you in the browser window.

No doubt that FF is a better browser than IE but its still not the best out there.
