Quoting Spikey2005 | I do not understand how anyone can use vista... It looks nice by graphics, but would that not eat up your speed of the computer? Transparent windows, Visual effects and stuff. If you went over board by opening so many things at once, I recon on a computer with Athlon XP Processor, 1GB RAM, 128MB graphics card, its bound to crash.
The thing that really gets to me is that one of the CEO's from microsoft is personally blaming the poor sales of Windows Vista on those who Pirated the copy of it.
I could say that he is about 25% correct on that, but the 75% that he is wrong is the percentage of those who have tried Vista, and have warned Thouands of people on forums not to get it because its not very good or Stable enough.
It is as if Microsoft Think their product is so perfect, its working. Bet you every microsoft building has Windows Vista upgrades. They are all hating it, and Bill Gates is sitting in his office admiring it like a second wife! |
Negative. The computer I have Vista running on, has the following specs:
AMD AthlonXP 3000+ (oc'd @ 2.5GHz)
1GB (2x 512MB ) Kingston DDR400
Leadtek nVidia GeForce 6600GT
With those as the base specs, I can run Vista just fine with NO issues. It's a lot faster when I run on my main rig on another partition, but meh... I'll stick with WinXP for gaming, at least for now. |

It's ok... not every program I have runs with it yet and many drivers are still beta... Also, mentioned earlier someone said it scans your computer every 30 seconds to make sure you are not doing anything illegal, which is false. Scanning your computer to see what you are doing goes against freedom of privacy, meaning Microsoft would be in big trouble if Riot Guards statement was true.
System resource hog also, unless you do what I do and shut off many useless services. |

I see no one has bothered to answer my question about Vista so i guess i'll just have to ask them again.
question one: sence you'v had vista. Exaclt how stable would you say it is? (scal of one to ten one being never crashes, ten being crashes as long as my eyes are open)
question two: is it posable to install and play old dos based games, without having to install third party software? (games like Dark forces, quake one, doom one, castle wolfinstine, and deer hunter one.... yes i actuly own the retail cd's of thes games) |

Sorry about that DARTH JOKER.
1: Stability? maybe a 6, I know it doesnt handle viruses well at all. I already have a virus AGAIN!!! the third time in 2 weeks, and windows will not even try to fix it. The virus attacked a registry file and when it asks to update my registry and fix it, it just wont do it.
2: DOS games im not sure. you might be able to if you use an administrator work-around, but i know i have trouble running some of the latest games for sure. That's why i know about the administrator work-around.

Tried a 'Vista' style for StyleXP for a while, didn't really do anything for me! Back to good old Sentinal now
The only time I've actively sought a windows OS upgrade was to get rid of the evil that was Windows ME.
This new graphics fest of an OS hasn't given me any cause to remotely think of 'upgrading' to it. XP works just fine for me, it's by no means perfect but if it works why change it? Having gone through the vista compatability program out of curiosity, my laptop won't even work with half the new features anyway! Neither would my wallet come to think of it lol! |

Yea, I used Sentinel a while back. Now I'm using Crucifix ^^
And Ghostkid... Do some more looking before you say that. Just like any new OS, can you tell me the differences between Windows 3.1 and Windows 95? Or Windows 95 and Windows 98? Or even Windows 98 and Windows XP? And I mean differences other than the way they look.
The same cycle, not just a different look... More features. |

Ghostkid the only problem is that I downloaded that and installed it and now after I restart the computer, it stays on that theme. Even if I change it to something else, which is really annoying and since I didn't back up any files. I can't un-install it to the original look. If I knew what files needed to be replace. I could probably get them from the other PC. |

Wouldn't a system restore fix that? |

You should be able to uninstall the theme and it will return everything back to normal.
Or, It should let you change the Theme just by changing it in the display properties. A few things may not change since they overwrite system orginals, but the program makes backup's of the orginal system files. |

Maybe...If I had not deleted the restore files. I had almost 3Gigs cluttering my hard drive.

I did do the uninstall and now I am stuck with that theme(dark grey menus) even if I change it on my desktop properties. The only thing that doesn't change is my desktop picture. |

giggles - working in the IT industry I've found that 99.9% of virus infections are user caused.
Not that you go out of your way to get yourself infected but the reason you got infected is because you did something wrong.
I've not used an anti-virus at home for close to 2 years now with XP, here at work I've been using Vista for the last 6 months with no AV (because the office version of NOD32 broke Vista all those 6 months ago).
Neither PC is infected with anything.
All you need to protect your computer is common sense if you're hidden behind a router/firewall. Both PC's are hidden from the world so the only way to get something onto the machine is if someone using them does something stupid.
In the 'does something stupid' column we have...
a) Uses Internet Explorer
b) Visits dodgy websites... eg warez, p0rn, torrent sites
c) Uses Internet Explorer
d) Blindly opens all attachments they receive via email
e) Uses Internet Explorer
f) Uses Outlook Express
g) Uses Internet Explorer
h) Uses Outlook
i) Uses Internet Explorer
j) Blindly installs anything the website they're visiting asks them to
k) Uses Internet Explorer
l) Uses Windows Mail (the Vista version of Outlook Express)
m) Uses Internet Explorer
n) Downloads and installs any toolbar (see entries a, c, e, g, i, k and m as well). The Google toolbar isn't an exception as you should be using Opera/Firefox anyway... where the Google search is built in.
This list is by no means exhaustive. For example I may have forgotten to mention that you shouldn't be using IE if you take the security of your PC even slightly seriously.
My Dad has suddenly taken a huge interest in his laptop being secure. He's had the thing 3 years and I think media attention on viruses/trojans etc has finally filtered through. It didn't take much convincing him the only way to actually be secure was to stop using IE. For someone who does occasionally do something he shouldn't with a PC Opera/Firefox will prevent you (or the site you're visiting) from doing something stupid whilst IE... well welcomes stupidity with open arms.
He's now a happy Opera user - something I never saw happening yet he's switched to it without a hitch! |

I saw windows vista on one of the computers in a shop.
It seems to be very inefficient when it comes to working.
It's good for a fancy presentation of photos or a new software, but thats all
Not made for work.
Does it still have Win98 stlye to choose? lol
Oh well, win98 with some new effects would be ok.
Those grow up effects of the windows and all this just wastes time imo. |
