I my opinion, the original RFU was the best. 2289 downloads so far
A common mistake people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

That day someone should host a bunch of servers a one or two with pass a few without. We could declare it "RF Day" and everyone on L4Y who plays RF could play in the passworded servers and the rest will be for the public masses (of 64 people).

yes, and like the passworded servers would run like the best say 10 custom maps ever released on l4y(ie. all around the world, RF manor, various RATS and/or RTS maps etc....)

There are a whooping 64 players in RF right now

Ohhh still full of players then

Maybe one day we will see another redfaction. Maybe not.

They do remake old games quite a lot dont they.

First, isk's little story didn't really sound like an RF story, sorry. It sounded more like an RE (Resident Evil), Quake, HL, and HL2 story thrown into one.

The mutating plague is a good idea, but if only a railgun would kill the monsters, there wouldn't be much in the way of multiplayer. Making more powerful guns would solve the single player problem, but in multiplayer, it would be instant overkill. The idea of the people getting left on the planet is plausible, but even so, they'd radio for help. Also, if the original inhabitants (or conquerors?) of Mars would return in a large ship, there'd be no way to stop them, since any intellingent species would know not to leave them in a position to be boarded (the only realistic way to take out the aliens). Searching for leftover rockets? That is unlikely, since the EDF ordered that anyone armed would be shot on sight, thus, they'd likely destroy the leftover ammo. Anyway, the entire RF idea is mostly a lone soldier fighting back. Constantly worrying about allies wouldn't make sense, since even in the best games with allies, they are very limited. This is because worrying about allies is far too distracting to the player. If there was a co-op mode (you could even do it online), and you'd play the game in squadrons (instead of the (presumed) army of leftover miners), it would make sense. Nice movie idea, but not much in the way of gameplay.

Because I know I'd be flamed even more for not posting my own (rather n00bish) ideas, here they are:

We'd follow up from the RF2 game (despite the fact that it anti-owned to Canada and back), with maybe Parker being a merc or member of the EDF. Perhaps go to Venus or back to Mars to re-establish the mining system. I suppose we'll go with a modified version of iki's, with the plague mutating everything left over. Re-animating the dead miners would work to create a mildly infinate army, but the idea is poor at best. Probably the only plausible idea would be to abandon the Parker and Co. characters and move onto an interstellar mine, and instead of the miners rebelling, the aliens rebell against the Ultor and Red Faction crews. Still, at best, not a good idea. Truthfully, there is no plausible continuation of the story, as RF2's idea closed the story. This is why RF3 wasn't made, as any other game would basically be a clone of RF.

Or the story can be different like some biologists go to Mars 15 years after the incidents of Rf and Rf2 to study weather ULTOR and the war infected the animals. But they discover that the animals have changed a little bit and became more large and aggressive. They than saw a rocksnake captured by guards but didint look like ULTOR guards or mercenaries.Soon they discover that a company named BioTech have continued capeks work and are perfecting the plague to make better soldiers to conquer the world. They even made clones of the super soldiers to colonise other planets and mixed the soldiers DNA with the mutated creatures to make even better and powerful soldiers.Eventually the world was taken over by BioTech and inslaved. The biologists were the first to be captured. After a year BioTech had colonise all of the planets and were sending all the humans to each planet to mine for minerals and other new minerals soon to become discoverd. The biologists now think this is the time to start the biggest revolution ever happened in history. They started their first attack by taking back earth from the clutches of BioTech.Word eventually leaked to BioTech and they sent a million super soldiers to earth but they were all killed.Evemtually the biologists met with some of the charecters in RF and RF2.They eventually spread out to the other planets to liberate the people. The game will take you to other planets from Earth to the freezing surface of Pluto.Discover new weapons and enemies and make allies in your mission to liberate all of humankind. Some missions will take you to familiar places like Mine-M1 wich was reopened by BioTech or the surface of Jupiter .The super soldiers are also different depending on wich planet they are like in Pluto they are stronger and have thicker skin.Take new vehicles like the Instersteller all purpose vehicle.Or fight in space wars like Star Wars.I think this version could have a better and realistic graphics engine that has geo-mod advanced physics like HL 2 and graphics like Doom 3.Still containing the mutated plague. How do you like that version Vidi44 coz i hope your satisfied.

If i remember correctly, volition had a RF3 story all laid out. RF was supposed to be a trilogy.

RF - Mars
RF2 - Earth
RF3 - Neptune (I think it was neptune)

I really wish they did finish the RF trilogy off. A Co-op mode would be awesome.except not just 2 player co-op, be the first game to ever introduce a huge Multiplayer storyline. Possibly the same as the single player but Harder, with slight variantions to allow for the squad based storyline. If you did play in a Squad, would be cool if you could pick player classes as well.
But these are all just hopes, and dreams.
Trying to find old players. Anyone about? Drop me a PM or reply to this thread:

Yes i beleive yur right but i'm unsure if it was on Neptune. It was some huge gassy place*insert joke here*.But i cannot remember where. would be nice if RF3 were developed but hey who knows they may be making it now maybe it's soooo big that they don't want anyone to know about it unti it's time and if they do find out THQ will kill them!

I don't really care if there is going to be another game called Red Faction 3, it probabbly isn't.

what i dod want, and hope, is that they are going to make another game, that has multiplayer, And a same sort of Geo-modding techince, I still haven't seen a game that has a same sort of good quality geo modding.

That is exactly the point I was trying to make, Mos.. Not necessarily RF based but built on the same engine with Geomod and a level editor as easy to use as RED but with the bugs fixed

I think all next gen pc games and console games should have a modified more powerful geo mod in their engines like geo mod should be the back bone of the engine and then the developers can do what ever they want to the engine.Rf anniversery should be on september 28th every year and every year they should release RF anniversery map packs on that day for each game in L4Y

Welcome!
Post 2 / 10

Only a very small number of people still play this game. At it's peak only a small number of people played this game. It doesn't compare or even come close to any other fps game that's been out on the market. When Quake and Doom were in their infancies, they whipped the dog-tar out of the popularity of this game.
I'm not knocking the game. I am just making the point that this game, for all it could have been, never really was. Sure everyone sits in front of their PC thinking how many servers are up.
Well, maybe on a "good" day 105?

Meanwhile,
SOF2 795 servers
UT2K4 1975 servers
Americas Army 2500 servers
and so on and so forth...

The game clings to life because a few people still live inside it's limitations. Geomod was cute but it doesn't make for any frags.

Good gaming everyone...
BTW, I still play this game. My wife and me have shootouts regularly.
But that's about it.

Well, it is a good idea, since Capek's laboratories were unknown until Parker found them. BioTech (although a poor name for an evil coporation, we won't argue that now) is a good idea. Super-soldiers based on the plague's mutating effects are a pretty spiffy idea. The adaptation of the soldiers to their respective planets is a good idea, as it ensures that you'll constantly be challenged. You could possibly start the game in a Blue Faction base (since Earth is the Blue planet, and the Red Faction is based on Mars, the Red Planet), as the Earthly forces team together to fight the super-soldiers. They could commandeer the EDF fleet's technology and use it for inter-planetary travel. You'd progress throughout the solar system, freeing the colonists of each planet. You could reach either Mercury or Pluto (possibly even Venus, as that planet is near impossible to live on, and the super-soldiers would have to adapt the most) for the end of the main section. Then (either for fun or to fill up any leftover CD space on the disk (why have a disk if you aren't going to fully use it?)) you'd see the BT armada enter some sort of new hyperspatial warp thingie. Luckily (because the story couldn't end without you defeating the BT forces) you find a BT ship still with its warp drive intact, and reverse-engineer it to fit your ship. You then follow their warp trail to a remote space station orbiting Sol past Pluto (really far out, past the Oot cloud), which is about the size of a small moon. In this, you meet the newest version of super-soldiers, equipped with the strongest armor and most powerful weapons. Unfortunately (to keep the player from becoming too powerful in the end-game (like most people did with the HMG and PR in RF1)), they are designed only for the super-soldiers' telekinetic minds (the weapons will work, but won't do a thing against a super-soldier, as they are designed to disrupt normal mental pathways, as well as physically destroy the body. Thus, you can use them, but it will take say 10 shots to kill a s-s).

The entire multiplayer-based single player is a great idea, perhaps we could ask them to include it in the next version of RF (if one is in development). Also, it would have to have a normal multiplayer (since you never know if they'll think that a multi-based sp would be acceptable, we'll have to tell them it won't be), which would include all the original RF maps, the multiplayer RF2 maps (which I'd like to see, so anyone with a screenshot could post one, since I never played RF2 but hear its multiplayer was great (although not put online, which was a stupid mistake on Violition)), and some new maps. Who knows, maybe they could put in the most popular of the l4y maps. New weapons would have to be included, as well as new graphics. However, any RF game would absolutely have to be 28k compatable (and reasonably so, with ping under 500), since even 56k can act like 28k at times (and because a lot of people still have 28k). Unfortunately the game's minimum requirements would have to be updated (but anyone with a 200 MHz processor really should get a new one (yes I know RF isn't for 200 MHz, it was a joke)), perhaps to maybe 1 GHz, 128MB Ram, 64MB video card, and a low-grade sound card. It would have to be available (natively) in multiple resolutions (instead of needing a hack to get higher ones), ranging from 800x600 through to 1284x1024.

I don't know, since Violition probably would have said something about a new RF game years ago. Even so, notice it took 5 years for RF1 to be released, and 2 years (or so) for RF2. If they were to make a major revision, it would probably be due out in a year or so. THQ is also notorious for micro-managing their developers, and for keeping all projects under-wraps for years. Even so, we could pester Violition for the RF1 source code (and possibly RF2's), and from there, we could program our own version of RF3. Granted, since we have about 2 programmers here (I dabble, but I don't count since I'm fairly new to the C languages (still at pre-script kiddie stage)), it would take 20 years to make RF3 (that's assuming Violition properly documented their code so we wouldn't have to decipher it), so a shell extension for RF2 to give it multiplayer mode would probably be easier. However, since RF3 would be dramatically different from RF2's stuff, a RF3 RED Editor would have to be made (cutting down on programming, as you'd just update the graphics and fix some errors), but you'd still have to write the muliplayer stuff. However, with the RF3 RED, the entire RF community in l4y could write levels, creating (with a little luck) a single player mode and a whole mess of multiplayer levels. Cutting down the workload like that would make it possible (within say 2 years if the programmers would work like they were getting paid to do it (10 hours a day and no real holidays), but that is highly unlikely). The major parts for the programmers would be creating the RED engine for RF3 and messing with the multiplayer code to allow it to host squadron play for the single player. Outside of that, roughly 70% of the actual work would be done by the community. However, there is no guarantee whatsoever that all the levels would be created of the same quality, and that they'd all flow into a sp game (we'd need a coordinator for the levels, telling everyone what to map, and no one would like that). Finally, it would take about 6 months to bug fix the game and make sure that everything was of similar quality and completeness. Overall, the project would take (conservative guesstamate) 5 years, if not more.

Basically, RF3 would have to be contracted to a major development company, consisting of at least 20 full-time programmers who would donate their entire day to developing RF3. If we wanted it done quickly, we'd have to hire at least 50 or so programmers to speed it up. The whole cost would be over $10,000 us, because programmers typically get a few hundred for a small project, and this is no small project. I'd figure they'd want at least $20 us an hour a piece because it would be very monotenous.

Also, in reference to OSS' post, for all the servers other games have up, how full are they? RF's servers are often pretty full whenever I play, so if 100 servers are reasonably full (say about even 1/4 of them were full, with an average load of 15 players), you still have a lot of people playing.
