Upgraded from
AMD Athlon64 x2 6000+ , MSI K9N Neo V3, MaxOrb
to
AMD Phenom x4 955 BE , Asus M4A78-E, EKL Groß Clock'ner : ~410$

GTA4 before (with shadows - they are CPU intense): 25,08fps
after : 54,10fps

GTA4 before (shadows off): 32,96fps
after: 61,78fps

Crysis before: 26,40fps
after: 40,76fps

UT3 before: 127,43fps
after: 177,26fps

Nothing has been overclocked.

Of course the performance advantage will vary depending on the benchmark and chosen resolution/detail etc. So in a different UT3 benchmark it may increase by even more percent for the phenom.. or less.
Looks like the old CPU was breaking the games hard.
I didn't expect much of a change in UT3, but while testing I could see that all 4 cores were quite busy actually. (LCDSirreal ftw )
GTA4 benchmark runs with a performance of +116% now. I've expected that from the most quad core profitable game on the market. ^^

So a well worth investment and upgrade for the money I'd say.

Oh definitely. Coming from the X2 line you should be in heaven right now, lol.

Got me a Phenom x4 9650 and a Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4 motherboard from my brother.

My cpu is running really cool at 24-32c did not expect it too be that low.

I also got me 4gb of Corsair XMS2 DDR2 memory.

I will upgrade my cpu to a Phenom II x4 955 BE later on.

Well RED-FROG, I do like that fact that the GeForce GTX 285 does have this:

HDMI*     Via adapter. This way I could maybe hooked it up to the big screen. After all it does have a gaming mode. -->

But since we (state emplyees of California) might be getting a pay cut in the near future. I might just wait a couple of months after summer.

The mainboard didn't really contribute into a lot of performance gains.
Different mainboards for the same socket doesn't even vary in a single frame per second in games. It's just that the more expensive ones serve better overclocking abilities because they run more stable at higher clocks and voltages. Plus they offer more PCIe lanes and whatnot..

Sure, the mainboard also did it's thing into the performance boost over the old one, but so will do any other AM2+ or AM3 board.

I can't say why intels cpus are that expensive.
But you've got to see t in a different way.
The i7 920 from intel is the cheapest (entry) i7. It is kinda compareable with the AMD Phenom 955 BE. It's more expensive than the 955 BE, and it will require DDR3 components.
Then we have even more expensive intel cpus, which seem to be even faster and relatively ridiculous priced.

These speed advantages will be noteable in applications such as WinRar for file compression and other multimedia crap which doesn't really interest me to run faster.
Games will most likely not run faster since most games cannot load them 100% at all. Most of them are gpu enabled and the cpu plays a smaller role.

If you are an enthusiast with a lot of money, go ahead buy the i7.
Watch how the prices will drop in a few months and then tell us how worth the investation really was.

I'm absolutely happy with my choice, I thinked long time about it.
I can crank up any game to the absolute maximum, hell I could do this with most games before the upgrade, too. But now it's smoother and the system has even more reserves.

2.6ghz quad >3.0ghz dual?(I have this)

Yes. Quads have a smaller and better architecture, and more cache.
The most important thing is, that they CAN do twice as much stuff at the same time, however most games don't support quad core yet. Most apps don't even support more than one core... so it could give you the impression that you are better off with a higher clocked CPU that has only 1 or 2 cores..but that shouldn't be the case in real.
(I bet there's tons more advantages)

Somewhat right. The i7 architecture is much better than any of the current AMD line.

The i7 920 which is Intel's lowest offering offers about 10x+ more performance than the highest end AMD Phenom II. Games of course comes a different story wherein they are somewhat side-by-side.

For a better productivity cpu, i7 And if you think that $280 is high in price you obviously either buy prebuilt eMachines or you don't do any upgrading.

Also if you didn't notice the i7 920 D0 stepping can be seen for $180 You just need to actually do a little looking around. MicroCenter recently had a big sale on them.

And yea, as RED-FROG mentioned, the prices WILL indeed drop, but same with the PII line, its the same with ANY technology you buy really, not just CPUs. If you are looking into spending the money for an i7 rig, I'd advise you find a good deal or just wait until after the summer when i5 and the low-end i7 are released. The enthusiast i7s should drop a little bit in price I would think.
(eg. I spent $280 on my Q9550, of course this was a while back, but right now the Q9550 has been seen as low as $170 at Frys and MicroCenter, and without a sale about $230 from places like NewEgg. Worth the upgrade from an E8400 @ 4GHz? For me, yes. I make use of multitasking extensively and I don't regret my purchase.)

Brollocks had an unreleased i7 960 available for sale on OCForums not too long ago for about $650, but look at this thing fly on AIR,

If you tell me that sucks on air I will slap you silly lol

I am getting my first dual core ever this week a celeron E1200 for $40 of eBay.
I have only ever dealt with quads and a few singles. Pretty much skipped duals all together

Yea, no offense, but what reason would you have for purchasing such a low-end chip? You could pick up an E5200 for about $50 and be able to achieve a 3.5GHz oc if you are looking into ocing.

I would not mind a i7 especially the 975 that processor is a beast..... but... wow the price tag on that one is way too high for me.

I am not using the CPU for anything, just so that the system powers on. I am building a folding farm, where all the processing power is in the GPU's Stuff the CPU its not important for what I am doing. And no, $50 for a E5200. I live in Aus and use AUD the next cheapest intel CPU was the E2200 @ $80, what a rip

No gamer needs it, besides for showing off.
You'll lose hundrets of dollars for nothing.

Same with if you run 2 GTX 295 in quad SLI. Nobody really needs it. Some do it - to show off. Just like driving a ferrari in the city all the time, it has power and it's expensive, but it's not required.
But hey, it's not bad to have those people, they lower the prices for everyone else.

I don't play many games anymore i am usually working with 3D or video editing so i would not say that a processor that is as powerful as that is useless, it can also be overclocked to over 5ghz.

Folders could use it. And only 2 295s???

(23 nVidia GTX295s
32 9800GX2s)
That is for a folding farm, and including the use of a high power cpu you can not only use GPU for folding, but also include your CPU in the process.
