I dont want to vote, show me the results!
How many CPU cores does you PC have?

*single
*dual
*quad
*triple
*octa
*MOAR

mark as spam if need be

Happy with your cores? Thinking about upgrading anytime soon?

Well, I have reached the point where I want to upgrade from my Athlon x2 64 6000+ (dual hence the x2) to some QuadCore CPU - next month.

More and more games have a poor performance most likely due to bad console ->PC porting, or because they are just not gpu enabled.

For example GTAIV, Prototype, UT3, NFS undercover waste CPU power like nothing else.
In these titles reducing the graphics detail has little to NO effect at all.
Best example would be GTA IV...I can play on very high or very low...on the latter I benefit in around +2fps.
Why? Because the GPU is never loaded enough to break the framerate actually. It's always the CPU that breaks the speed. The +~2fps are caused by disabling shadows. These are part of CPU calculations. I can also just disable shadows and get the same results. Anything else, including resolution has absolutely no effect on my PC. Graphics card: HD4870.
No other game on the market than GTA 4 benefits that much of a QuadCore (and maybe TripleCore).
DualCores are simply overwhelmed with the tasks that need to be done in it. (shadows, dynamic lighting, phyiscs, AI)
It's pretty much the same situation in the other mentioned titles on my PC.

(AA does not count to the "increased detail" of course THAT could actually slow down the framerate. However I played Prototype with 4xAA @ 1680...before 30fps after.. 30fps. The game kinda sticks the framerate to 30-40 ("averaged") to make it appear smoother)

So it seems like everyone would need to upgrade to a quad core if he wants to stick with the newest PC titles and play them VERY smoothly.

Games like Crysis, Bioshock, FarCry2, Fear2, Quake4 etc are gpu enabled titles and mostly basing on raw gpu power. Sure, they also need a decent cpu base, but mostly everybody owns that one.

So the x2 64 6000+ is a really outdated part in my PC that needs to be changed.

oh and I hope that gave some little insight.
Don't just upgrade gfx again and again. Because at some point and in some games that won't help at all.

I currently have a Intel Core2Duo E6750 Overclocked to 3.20GHz. The stock speed is 2.66GHZ so its a dramatic increase for performance and my CPU stays at 31C - 35C at during idle or with programs running.

I do however want to upgrade to a QuadCore.... and overclock one aswell.

I currently have a T8100 Intel 2.10ghz Dual Core CPU mainly because nothing i use will need to Utilize more cores than 2 and then i have consoles for better gaming experience as i don't have desktop anymore
Maybe when i build a new computer "IF" needed ill put in a quad core but i don't do anything extreme to utilize all cores and there are hardly any programs which utilize all cores

Not much point in upgrading until something worth playing comes out .

That's mind feeling too, except I am still on a single core.
I don't really plan on upgrading until I have to.
Which should be around the time that Red Faction: Guerrilla is released for PC.

I have Dual but i will probably upgrade to Quad soon.

Oh and mouseclick try restricting your game to use only 1 core that should help with the choppy player movements in multi.

4 cores oc'd to 4GHz on a Q9550, gotta love it.

Will say though, after the releases of the mid-range i7, i5, and i3, the higher end i7(the ones currently available) should drop slightly in price. At which is when I plan to upgrade to that and a GTX 3xx series hopefully. Wishful thinking doesn't make it so though xD

And with Corsair finishing the gap in the PSU lineup with the 850HX (Reviewed by our own Oklahoma Wolf(review writer for JonnyGuru) over at OCForums, "I have another review sample I'm looking to unload... this time it's something really awesome - a Corsair HX850. This is Corsair's latest and arguably their greatest offering... a modular 850W unit with a single 70A 12V rail and efficiency up to and over 90% at times."), it really does sound like a good time to upgrade right after the summer.

And yes nay, I am waiting on the PC port of SFIV too, it looks damned good.

It's not any sort of amazing performance though, considering the arcade boxes use 7900GS's.

Interesting that they're using off-the-shelf hardware (like the 7900GS and C2D) for the coin-op version. And to think that arcade machines used to use custom hardware!

I'd still love to have an older arcade machine in my room.

Same here. Either Defender or Star Castle.

Just to give you an idea of how old I am. I played it when it first came out.
I bought the game for Xbox live but I have opened it. I can't really play console games any more. I've gotten to use to keyboards.

Getting an
AMD AM3 Phenom II X4 955 BOX Black CPU (AMDs flagship)
and an
AM2+ ASUS M4A78 Pro AMD780/SB700 mainboard
next week (hopefully)
Oooh and a Liquid Metal Pad of course..

Both are priced really well and give most performance for the price.
With this, I won't need to "upgrade" to DDR3 RAM thus wouldn't make my 4Gigs that I already have useless. (it's not even upgrading afterall)

That was just to give you an idea of how you can upgrade your own PC if you go the AMD way.

If you are doing a full blown upgrade right now it's stupid to do so. Just wait for Intel's upcoming lineup for the pricedrops on i7(Within the next few months). Phenom was a joke, even AMD commented on it at a past conference. Phenom II is what Phenom should have been, but still not worth much if you can spend a little extra $$$ and grab an Intel.

You will just get more ACTUAL bang for your buck with Intel. Since their cpus will do things faster than AMD's lineup. Of course keeping in mind you are going to be spending a bit more.

But if you have not been keeping up, the latest i7 920 D0 stepping is an EXTREMELY good performer. Especially with overclocking.

Of course if you want to keep with AMD, nothing wrong with that. The Phenom II line is a good line. First good line in a while since the old S939 Opterons I'd probably say.

sobe, this is the reason why I am in no hurry to build another PC. I am waiting for the price to drop on the Intel® Core™ i7 Processor to go down in price. Right now one of my PCs took a dump and I threw away the motherboad and chip. Kept every thing else though.

Rightly so. I am thinking about upgrading to i7 when Intel slashes prices as well. Would love to get my hands on a D0 920. Already have a pot and a friend I am talking with at a local gas company to provide LN2 for my testing.

Plus, the i7 920 D0 is the current best bang for buck cpu on the market right now.

It's also hella expensive. What is it like $1200 bucks?
