Ok all you computer genius types, here is a little puzzler for you.
I'm running WinXP on a laptop... nothing fancy. I have a firewall active constantly which is Zone Alarm.
Normally if I have no browser open or any other Internet related software running, Zone Alarm shows very little activity and neither does the little connection icon. However, in the last few days there is a connection indicated every few seconds and data is received.
Zone Alarm shows that it is thye Generic Host Process for Win32 Service that is causing the activity. Now I know this program is important for internet connections so I can't just shut it down, but what I want to know is, why is it now so active?

I have scanned my laptop with Vet Antivirus which I have found to be better than most. I have also scanned with Pest Patrol, Ad-aware, SpyBot, Hijack This, Stinger, CWShredder. I didn't find anything.
A brief look through my registry didn't find anything in the usual places like the Run, Runonce etc HKEYS. Even so, the dang thing is receiving data even as I type this!

I also tried an online AntiVirus scan in case my own had been corrupted but that too found nothing.

I can't see anything obvious in the Windows Task Manager either.

Solutions, thoughts, suspicions, wild guesses... all welcome LOL.

Porn... yeah right lol... moving on... now that I think about it, this started not long after I started using Yahoo messenger and MSN Messenger again. Both cause problems with my firewall but I think I fixed that but it does seem odd I now have this other problem.

I've had that swine lightbulb thing before but got rid of that easily.

The wireless network thing could also be an issue. I did have it turned off because it interfered with my TV. Must check whether its still off.

The wireless is IR. It interferes with the remote control for the TV lol.

Just been to the AVG site. Scanning with one of their standalone tools now. Found nothing yet and connection is still registering

Kiliad I get the same thing.
Are you sure that it isn't part of windows automatic update?
I periodically runs all those programs that you mentioned above plus Web Root Spy Sweeper and ...

Sorry my coffee was ready.
Any way, it found nothing. Which only leads me to believe that it is part of the OS or that I am infected with the same thing as you.
Then again I get it on both PC. Both are running under WindowsXP and WindowsXP professional. The anti-virus software that I run is sophos but I do the Free Panda Online Scanner every so often and I have yet to find any viruses.

Well, i have a few questions / suggestions for you. but im no network know-it-all..

is windows firewall enabled?
are you on a router? if so what kind?

if windows firewall is active check what applications have an exception. Id be on the lookout for anything suspicious. If you have a router make sure you password lock it so nobody else can login without the proper password. also check for any potential ports you may be forwarding someone may abuse. Make sure your not on a DMZ.

but with that said, its me watching you kiliad. i am so obsessed with you i must know what every little thing you are doing. little do you know i have cameras set up all over your house monitoring every one of your moves... EVEN in the bathroom.

er well nevermind.

LOL, you guys...
Well.. I run Zone Alarm as my firewall and keep the WinXP's one turned off because it is a royal pain in the gluttius maximus.
I have no router and all automatic updates are turned off.

D2k - Well its your eyeballs that will suffer if those cameras are really there. The crime is its own punishment lol.

Frank - Well at least I know someone else has the same problem... if indeed it is a problem. Although it does kind of worry me that if this is some kind of hacker attack, why am I attracting the same kind of unwanted attention as you? LOL

I did find something about MSN Messenger. Later versions install a file called yinsthelper.dll which can be used by evil individuals to crash messenger... not that this is all that bad. Just annoying.

Your stalker is using his PSP

Id go for that. Get within about 15 yards of a wireless router with your PSP and you can connect...

Uninstall the messenger that comes with Windows XP. That is a security risk waiting to happen.

Also use this handy program to turn off all those unwanted program that might be running on the background. It also comes with a handy messenger uninstaller/disable.

XP-Antispy 3.95-1

On a side note, I just noticed that it's a newer version than what I have. Time to upgrade.
