Blah! File Front is being retarded. I Finished the lower res texture versions of the map 3 days ago and I've tried to upload them to file front every day since, but every time I try to upload it either stays at 0kb/s and the time remaining and speed never changes, or it starts off normal then suddenly the speed and time left freezes and then I get "This page cannot be displayed" and if I refresh it says you file was not uploaded successfully, or it goes extremely slow like 10kb/s so I just end up canceling it...
BTW the 'mid res' version of the map is 70mb rared and the 'low res' version is 20.5mb rared |

But my question is:
Does the frame rate improve with the lower resolution texture?
Some question huh? |

not much.
On the highest res version in the lowest FPS area of the map I get 18 FPS and in that same area on the lowest res version I get 22 FPS... There might be more difference on a weaker computer though that can't handel all the high res textures.. I'll try it on my Laptop later.. The fps would be alot higher though if I could get a giant portal to split the map in 2 because theres not much other areas I can portal, but every time I try to put a giant portal to split the map I end up with a bunch of holes. |

Have you tried moving the portal at very small increments?
I've had to do that with mine because I would get holes sometimes when it went through a detail brush and sometimes it didn't.
If you ever look at some of my maps, they all tend to have just one portal and it's a huge one ( ) going though the middle of the map. It must be genetics. |

You do realise that this type of portalling will offer little or no benefit in terms of performance? I have found that it just allows you to create more in the editor but doesn't necessarily give you better FPS. This is because you can still see both sides of the map from all areas within the map, so in effect both rooms are still always drawn and rendered, and therefore the portal is not working!
Having said that, it is really the only way to portal some of these larger open maps... |

if you look at world of cubes 2, it has 2 portals like 10 units apart in the middle... how did he do that without having problems? |

Open up DM-WMP-Jailbreak.. I have 3 portals doing the same job Also if you do, fix up the fact that you can get out of the map with a couple of large invisible face brushes |

Most of the time, you mainly care about pushing RED to calculate a bit more brushes before crashing. Except for a few maps by IAC (yes, i know it's the topic we're dealing with), FPS is not much of a problem because brand new computers are able to render much more polygones than those old comps RF was suposed to be run on. |

Ok I started working on the map again after being destracted with other things for the last couple of weeks and I think it's pretty much done. It just needs a final test so whos up for a test in the next couple of hours or tomorrow? If anyones interested I'll post the download links. Note I have the Low res file and normal res file done so you wouldn't have to download the huge 245mb High Res version, you could download the 73mb normal res version or the 22mb low res version because they all work with each other.
Also Frank I got around to testing the low res version on my laptop and it makes a big difference... It actually makes the map playable and load quicker on it. |

So in a nutshell...Wait. I think I can see the headlines now

So I was right about the lower resolution making the level more playable.
I'll be happy to test out the level with you again. This time I would of course load the low resolution level on both PC, the server and this one. |

But the low res is ugly. I only think it makes a diff if the comp can't handel all the highres textures... Like on my comp theres hardly any diff maybe 1 or 2 fps but on my laptop theres a big diff like 10 fps...
anyway heres the links:
High Res
*note if you d/l this one or already have it you'll have to also download this. Its the most recient rfl plus a few new textures. You would have to add them to the vpp.
Normal Res
Low Res
We can test tomorrow sometime
BTW, Why are you " a sacred user" on the online page frank? Scared ppl will stalk you so you have to hide your identity? |

I got a question; What is the difference between normal and low resolution?
Don't tell me the file size either.
OK, here is yet another question; So you have 3 version then?

So your saying that if I try to join a server running the High Res version but I only have the Low Res version I am still able to join and play? but that does not make sence because the .rfl would be different for each version..
I have a question.. are these filesizes already compressed using winrar or is it just the vpp size, because 22mb is too much to download for my liking |

His talking about the textures ... he would have named them all the same in each VPP so the .rfl doesnt have to be different.
When using custom textures the map only looks for a name, not any details of the image itself.
Well i assume all of this ... and we all know what that does |

Quoting DVL_IAC | Is anyone, with a decient computer and high speed internet connection, up for a map test? The maps 236mb rared right now because I haven't got around to cutting the res of all the textures in half for a low res version yet, so your going to need high speed to download the file. I'm also probably going to need someone to host the server because my comp has decided to cut itself off from every other computer. I can join servers but no one can see me even in a LAN servers. It doesn't even let me connect to a FTP server on another one of my comps yet other computers on my network can.. Anyway back to the topic. Map test anyone? It would probably be on around 8 or 9 EST. So about 2.5h-3.5h after this post. If anyones interested I'll PM them the d/l link.

Hello there, Sorry for this late reply. Havent been on L4Y for some time.
I can help you fix your problem with not being able to run Red Faction servers.
If you are running a Firewall over your LAN, you will need to follow these instructions for Windows XP Service Pack 2 Users.
1) Right click "My Network Places" on the desktop and go to Properties.
2) Right click your Default Local Area Connection and go to Properties.
3) Click on the "Advanced" tab at the top and click the button "Settings" next to Firewall settings.
4) Click on the "Exceptions" tab at the top of the Windows Firewall Settings.
5) In the box below you will see ticky boxes. Find "Red Faction" and make sure its ticked.
6) If you do not see "Red Faction" in the ticky box, click the "Add Port.." button below the box
7) In the "Name" box, put "Red Faction". In the "Port Number" box, add Red Factions port numbers in "7776" (I think?)
8) Keep it set as TCP and click OK.
If for some reason that this does not work, You will have to consult your LAN adminstrator to Set up Port Forwarding for Red Faction and enable port 7776 to forward its self on your LAN.
If you are using a Anti-Virus scan with Firewall Protection, Prefer to your settings to enable port forwarding. |
