I was hoping they were .tga (.vbm too?). Do the .tga in texture folder overide the textures in maps1-4 .vpps? Does anyone use this folder?

This is my last link of understanding that I do not understand yet.

But also - is there a way I can download 4,000 maps with one click instead of 12,000 clicks?

What exactly are you trying to do with the texture folder?

I mean in the PC version of the game the texture folder is there basically for mappers.

Put simply they put any custom textures they are using in the textures folder and link to them within Red Editor. If you are not mapping for RF there should be no reason to put anything in the textures folder as all custom textures are added to the individual map .vpps when the mappers create their levels.

If you're a mapper then you add the custom textures you want to use in your map to that folder. If you're not a mapper you can add porn, cornflakes or nasty smelling 70s aftershave to it if you want, or just delete it. It's not very important if all you wanna do is play.

Kind of, yes. Any new file with the exact same file name is going to, not over write (as all custom textures are contained within their own maps vpp) but they will over ride the older texture with the same name in every multiplayer map that texture appears in.

I don't know a hell of a lot about Macs apart from them being big and colourful and occasionally orange. Apparently they serve some useful purpose to Vets and the like but surely they can't be that complicated. I mean I know a bunch of people who play RF on Macs without half this trouble.

Is it because you are trying to run a server too? You'd have thought THQ would have sorted all that before going to all the trouble of releasing the game for Mac users. Then again knowing THQ...

Ignore the textures folder or just delete it unless you are trying to map for RF.

Simple question = long and meandering answer.

Basically what T-M-I-N-E is saying and it also is true.
The only way that the game will read the .tga files is if they are inside a .vpp file. When they aren't, they can only be read using RED and they would have to be placed in the Texture folder.
For those that are going to say something different. I know I know you can add them to your levels .vpp and it will work also but lets not confuse the Mac user with all this PC talk. -_-_

This is great news for me, my quest of understanding RF for the Mac is finally over! As far as wordy responses go - keep on typing let it all out!

Sorry for being a nuisance and hogging up time and forum space but I needed to know. Mac RF is decent but there are gaps - shocking gaps. THQ should be ashamed of themselves...

I am a machinist in real life, shaping metal to .00005" of an inch (.001 mm); and it only took me 18 years to do these tight tolerances. With computers I can get by - but I want to know all the details so that I know exactly what is going on.

I have been playing RF "LAN only" for almost 2 years and "online" for almost 4 months; got a hold of RED Editor in early August and made my first map in two weekends - CorporateHQ. (An exceptional first map if I may say so!)

My regrets are: being fooled by a mistake in my notes for two years regarding the creation of a user_maps folder and not getting involved in the RF community for those same two years.

Any way of downloading all custom maps in one click instead of individually?

No. Your best bet would be searching for map packs.
If I ever get to where I am going, will I know when I am there?

Nope, sorry but I might be able to be nice but it would involve you giving me your home address and I can send you a couple of 1-2 DVDs or a bunch of CDs. I course I would ship them priority.
Of course, I can't charge you for it. I've done it for a couple of people and since I feel your Mac pain, I can do it for you.

Note:
Don't post your address here, either email it to me or send me a PM.

Note # 2: For those that are reading this and would like the same treatment...Sorry I can't. I don't like you.

Good question! I must say Frank does a far, far, far better job supporting Red Faction than THQ does. And putting up with noobs like me, wow!

Frank, your efforts to help me are not wasted. If I can I am going to get the world of Mac up to speed on RF and get some more people in the servers.

This is the new link for mac users:

Frank, in return for the discs of custom maps, I can send you a delicious christmas fruitcake. Would you like one with prunes and nuts or grenades and c4?

I think it depends on the age of your MAC mines about 2 years old and it can just support red faction, the sound comes out like an echo, it is very weird.

Which OS are you using and which Mac model? The sound is weird - are you running the audio out thru a USB device? Is RF the only app that causes a dual sound?

Honorable Hapa Hanu. I have recorded the DVD and a CD of all the Death Match levels I have. Noticed I said Death Match. I use to have CTF maps too but a long time ago(when hard drives were expensive) I deleted those types of levels. I was running out of room. Silly me was saving the levels uncompressed, which took a lot more room.
Any way...I have one question, can "your" MAC open PC folders, if they can't then that means I will have to record another DVD/CD combo.
I recorded the DVD with 4 folders and the CD with one folder. Like I have them saved on my hard drive. If needed, I will record the DVD/CD combo with only the .zip files without the folder. I know you can open .zipped files because if you couldn't, you wouldn't be playing Red Faction live.

HMM since you're a staff member, I guess I can do it for you but only if you have a DVD drive. I am not about to burn 5 discs, since I would have to rearrange the folders to do so. I already did that for the DVD/CD combo in order to fit them all in two discs.

Yes! My Macs can read any format and with various applications I can access any sound, video, graphic and program. I have DVDs from around the world, samples from obscure places and the patience to make sure things are done correctly.
