Once again Frank - thou art my Hero! [huggs] LOL

Honestly its ok that Frank plugged his maps because I am certain they are all Mac safe - although I think RED_JUSTICE should have put in a link because he made a distinctive effort to make Mac safe maps.

As far as converting .wavs into .aifs - I can do it all. However, it would take time and I would have to plan out a method of safely and efficently converting the universe of .wav into a universe of .aif. Then there is the complication of distributing the files. Uffdah!

Otherwise, I could take the apathetic route and convert sound files on an "as needed" basis from folks requesting it. Then again the software I use to convert rudimentary sound files is called SoundApp PPC. It is freeware that dates back to 1995, if I am not mistaken. It is very easy to deal with.

PS: I have never created a Virus! That would spoil productivity!

Thursday Update: As it turns out there was nothing to do at work today so I got it off. Thus I spent my day off goofing around on the computers and figured out how to get custom maps to work without repacking .vpps.

The application can find custom maps when a mac user manually creates a user_maps\ multi folder in the game folder itself. According to my notes I tried this a long time ago and it didn't work, but now it does. Oh I know what it is - I use version 1.2 now and was using 1.1 then.

Wow, what a journey, now I don't have to invest in a PC!

Thanks for letting me soak up forum space with my incompetence!

Ah so simple yet might be very complicated for those that aren't computer savvy, But if you own and use MAC, then you are that type of person and shouldn't impair you from playing custom maps.
Any idea when the MAC friendly levels will be ready and if they are PC compatible(meaning that you would probably have to manually add the wave files in the .vpp too.

Enough of baffle. Could we get back to the topic.

So I use Virtual PC and VPP Builder to recreate the levelsm.vpp (.rfl's) and maps4.vpp (.tga / .vbm).

Is there an easier way to get the Mac RF to find and recognize custom maps? Without jumping thru flaming hoops?

It's an answer but where can they find Virtual PC and what are they precisely supposed to do with it.
I suppose a tutorial would be welcome.
Please share your experience.

There has been considerable dialog and confusion on my part - trying to make RF run custom maps on the Mac platform. Virtual PC and VPP Builder is the long way to run custom maps. If I didn't drink so much I coulda figured this out long ago.

There is an easy way to run custom .vpps I have figured out today!

For the Mac Red Faction to use custom maps, one must take the following steps:

1. Create new folder and name it user_maps in the RF Folder which contains the game
2. Create new folders and name them: multi single textures
3. Place downloaded custom .vpp into appropriate folder and run RF application

The game folder should look like this.

I will get back to you later about soundfiles Frank.

It's just too bad that THQ didn't program the game to do this automatically when you first install the game. You like they did for the PC version , wait you have a MAC, you don't know.
Imagine how many more players we would have...
At least 3, after all the game is old now but not outdated.

I would have thought that was the obvious thing to do, A?

Yes, you are right and I feel incredibly stupid! In my defense, I tried it before and it didn't work years ago, according to my notes. I am usually thorough about things and how this one slipped by I will never know. I reckon I am baffled at myself. lol

I will endevour to make it up to guys.

Thank you for contacting THQ. I'm sorry but the servers are down for repairs at this time. We expect them to be up and running again by November 24th.

Oh golly! You are so right. There are a fair number of classy dames out there with special fragging powers! Uff dah.

If I may say - regarding my years long quest of custom maps and Mac RF - there is absolutely no information anywhere that details how custom .vpps are handled on the Mac version. Furthermore, if I had not handled custom maps the long and difficult way it is possible that I would not have discovered how to make soundtracks Mac friendly. Therefore, I propose that brilliance can be found amongst stupidity. lol

Props,
Hapa the Mac using red headed stepchild hoser of Red Faction Hanu

PS: I better get back to work, one of the machine tools is ready for a new part - uh oh - I better delete the cookies on my boss's PC

Bringing this back on topic...

For PC RF how is the user_maps\textures folder utilized?

For Mac RF it looks like there is no way to run custom single player maps.

Also, is there an ftp holding the thousands of maps where one can download them all without downloading them one at a time?

I have started my campaign to convert soundfiles. So far the new .vpps have worked without flaw and are compatible with original .vpps. I have left the .wavs in place and added the .aifs so the new .vpps should work for both PC and Mac RF. Of course the new .vpps are larger - but I don't see any other way around this; I would prefer to make files that won't screw anything up for the Mac or PC.

Buyah!

Like this:

C:\games\RedFaction\user_maps\textures

And this:
C:\games\RedFaction\user_maps\single

I don't really understand the question.

Whoops. Allow me to rephrase.

What type of file goes into the textures folder?

Custom levels and most weapon mods go into multi folder while Custom Single Player maps nestle into the Single Folder. This much I think I grasp.

I think we all know what kind of handicapped perspective I have - I am still using a Mac and the Mac RF and PC RF have differences.

I just wanna put it together - cuz i donno wanna be a "rental metard"!

In the texture files folder, you install the texture(pictures) that are in .TGA format.
"Rental Metard"? I saw that before but I didn't think it was possible for more than one person to be that.
