Can macintosh users run user maps? If so, then where do they go?

Yes they can. The only time you(Mac Users) might not be able to use the levels is when they add music to a file in a certain way. You won't know until you try, but there aren't that many files that you CAN NOT use. Go ahead and download them.
I might also add that you can download any of these maps and they are all playable in Macs.

... you have been holding on to that for ages now ... just tell people so they know whether or not they are doing right. Censored, you might even do the community a favor and write a short note on it for them.
If I ever get to where I am going, will I know when I am there?    Modified Oct 21st, 01:26am by Forum Moderator

They are good to have especially when doing video editing. I personally would never buy one. If I ever made fun of somebody using a MAC, I was only kidding. They are good computer but what lacks with them is software titles. If it wasn't for that, who knows I might of even bought a MAC instead of a PC...NOT.

Yes, some maps won't work because of how the sound files are coded but this isn't a problem for most maps.

I have no idea what you are going about as far as holding on to what?
You want me to add notes on files that can't be played by Mac users?

Aha! Great to hear from another Mac user!

I have 5 to 7 of them - and they are unrivaled in audio and video action!

The installer discs for Mac RF do not install a user_maps folder. I have tried creating in the game folder several combinations and locations of user_maps and multi folders to get the application to find custom .vpp's. And failed every time. DOH!

So I use Virtual PC and VPP Builder to recreate the levelsm.vpp (.rfl's) and maps4.vpp (.tga / .vbm).

Is there an easier way to get the Mac RF to find and recognize custom maps? Without jumping thru flaming hoops?

Theory: I suspect the reason maps with custom sound tracks crash the Mac RF is because the application cannot find or use them. The custom maps use .wav whereas Macs use .aif. I have been apathetic to try and convert the .wav to .aif and then repack the audio.vpp file. The Mac RF audio.vpp file is in .aif format.

PS: None of my macs cost more than 300 bucks - they are all beat to hell and secondhand goods that I have resurrected.

You humble me with your reply Hoser Hapa Hanu. You would be correct to suspect the reasoning behind the crashing situation on certain levels that contain wave files.
I however doubt that you changing the said music files to something that a MAC would use would solve this problem. The only reason I say this is because when a level is made and custom sounds are added, they are added with the file extension. You renaming would change the extension and thus not allowing the game/level find the said file.
The only solution to this type of problem is to buy a PC or remake all the non-MAC friendly levels. Which I doubt will happen.

Ooooooooooh Fraaaaaaaaaank!

I figured out how to get the custom soundtracks to work in custom maps for the Mac! So every map ever made can be played on the Mac!

When the master server at THQ went down I said forget about RF and I did a bunch of housework; cleaned the gutters, fixed some broken windows and cleaned out the workshop. Then I fired up Cubase and Reason and worked on some custom jungle beats. It was during these moments that I remembered the map Pac Man Arena which has a jungle beat with some clever Pac Man samples. That is when I decided - must solve the problem.

So I took the .wav for Pac Man Arena and converted it to .aif. Taking the new .aif I repacked it into the music.vpp and tried it out. Holy mack it worked!

There is no excuse anymore; Macs can do it just like a PC, 'cept different. Apparently there is a protocol in the Mac RF that tells the application to ignore .wav suffix in favor of .aif.

Just be sure that the converted .aif is in the AIM 4:1 format - I used 22khz sample rate with 16 bit.

Truly I am Hoser the Hoserian!

Seriously tho - is there an easier way to run custom maps without repacking the levelsm, maps4 and music .vpps on a Mac?

As far as your question goes...I doubt it again.

Gosh ya know I was just considering - not all Mac users know how to deal with repacking .vpps.

Could I put together a map pack for Mac users - featuring the recreated levelsm and maps4?

That way a Mac user could download and play right away. However the download size would be ginormous! Perhaps 200 MB compressed. lol Got room in the l4y server?

Honestly I am trying to help expand the experience and SCIENCE of RF.

Not at the moments but how about just doing some of the more popular ones and keeping the file size to...hmm let's say 50Megs. Then again a large file like that you can always have hosted here:

FileFront.com

I have one large file there as well:

Thanks Frank,

Yer wisdom and advice is immaculate!

I would like to conduct further clinical tests and research on the Mac platform before I make a huge downloadable from FileFront. If possible I would like to avoid such a task for myself and those who want to download it.

Dear Hapa "The Machinist" Hanu:
If you look carefully at the post before mine, you will noticed that I have modified your post to include a link that is click-able to MAC users and those many many many PC users that use the internet.

You fixing some of the levels that are not playable by MAC users would be a gift to the human race and those that never got to play levels with wave music files in them(that weren't added to the level as ambient sounds).

If there is a heaven, I am sure that there will be a place waiting for you. I hear that in heaven, there is a very short supply of MAC users, it seems that MAC users tend to be evil people that who's only mission in life is to create viruses to infect what is an almost perfect operating system like MicroSoft WindowsXP™.
