Quoting mad_ferrit | Quoting Mostertman | I'm not gonna participate in another RFU I spend lots of time in my map for RFU4 (RFU4 Music room) But the complete project kinda failed. It was rushed in the end, maps weren't tested turoughly, some there were maps with errors. there were maps that didn't fit the theme at all, the downloads of the pack didn't work well, the pack was way to big, and couldn't been half the size it was. It was fun and all but i don't think its worth wasting my time on. |
AMEN, and the maps were hardly played I'd forget it now. |
Quoting mad_ferrit | Quoting RF Grim Reaper | If there is a 5th RFU then I think I too will sit it out, alot of time and effort that went into some of the maps ( including mine ) in RFU4. But people just don't play them. |
Ditto... |

Same here |
I'm not saying that making a nice map pack is a bad idea, But i guess that most of the people that made a map for RFU4 agree that spending alot of time in maps for a pack that aren't going to be played is kinda pointless.
BTW, Maybe if it is going to be SP, you all can create something cool and appeling for us |

Boy did I ever want to play RFU4, but there was NEVER anybody playing it. I sat in servers for upwards of half an hour at times, and nobody even joined. I couldn't get a game in the maps if I wanted to.
I think we need to rally the entire community together, including the hardcore programmers to make a SOLID total conversion multiplayer mod that's so good EVERYBODY will play it. |

The people straining at the leash for RFU5 might consider runnign some servers with RFU4 maps...help people feel that their work wasn't wasted and you might get some more interest. As you can see, most of those that mapped last time (or did all the heavy logistical lifting like Mr. Wizard) are feeling burned out. |

The first two RFU's were the best, then they just got progressively worse. We need someone older and more responsible to organize this project to make it as good or even better then the first two.
We need a theme that can give every mapper a thousand ideas. Winter themeing, I hardly get any ideas. |

Honestly.... I really think another project would do everybody alot more good than clutching on to the same one for dear life. This is just my opinion, of course...... |

We technically do have another project working. It doesn't have a CDC yet (eventually I'll get to it), but the SPMC 2K5 (Single Player Mapping Competition 2005) is currently underway.
The rules are on there (I edited my first post in it to reflect the newest rules, although I probably forgot something again). These rules are final, as I really don't care what it is that I forgot about (if I can't remember it after 2 weeks, I figure it isn't important).
The point of SPMC 2K5 is to do what RFU1 and 2 did for MP: revitalize interest in RF by making some great maps. As they're SP maps, you've a lot more options and fun things to work with.
The judging starts with individual L4Y user reviews (like we have for regular maps). Then, the highest rated (anything 4 or 5 rated) will be sent to judges (anyone who wants to judge. The only thing is that you can't have a map in the contest (so, I'm ruled out, but it doesn't bother me)).
Back on topic: RFU was a good competition. I remember the last one, and how I wanted to map, but hated the final theme (music. That really wasn't a theme, but an excuse to map whatever you wanted to. This is why, in my opinion, it failed; because everyone gets different ideas when listening to music, and also because music can't be expressed in concrete form). So, if there's a good theme for it, I might map. Just so long as we get a real theme, one that can be expressed in a non-subjective manner, we'll have a better response than from the last time.
My suggestion is of course, "Winter". If you're concerned with seasonal differences, go on google and look for "winter", you'll notice nothing but pictures of snow and stuff. Irregardless of where you live, society says "winter" is a cold season with snow and ice, furthered by holidays and festivities. If this isn't your definition of it, fake it or don't map. We need to go back to the old days when an RFU theme didn't involve trying to appease everyone. Just face it, eventually, someone somewhere is going to arg you off. Just deal with it, as we can't be a productive society by wanting to please everyone.
If someone is looking for "Winter" ideas, listen to Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" (primarily the three "Winter" movements. I especially like the first movement, as it reminds me of the first snow. The second movement reminds me of shoveling snow and falling on ice and being bored on a winter's day. The third movement reminds me of festivities and preparations for spring). If you listen to the "Four Seasons", you'll find what the seasons are all about. Its no wonder its one of the best Baroque pieces you'll ever hear (and possibly the best classical music you'll ever hear). Even if you're not into classical, just listen to it to get ideas about a winter theme (if it is picked). Anyway, there's some studies that show listening to classical music increases your IQ over time (who doesn't like that? Even if it's false, classical does calm you down when you're angered (what do you think I have blasting in my room after reading one of ENM's posts?)). If you're wondering where to get such a CD of Vivaldi's music, go to Walmart or use a P2P program (the music is over 300 some years old, no one could possibly own the copyright on it, as they weren't even invented back then, and even if it were copyrighted later on, this music is so old that any copyright would have fallen apart anyway).
Summary: The SPMC is the project that I think Johnny will like. The RFU should have a real theme, and winter is logical (as it is wintertime for most people anyway). If you're looking for inspiration, find a copy of Vivialdi's "Four Seasons" (or just the 3 "Winter" movements). While listening, search around Google Pictures for pictures of "Winter" (which includes mostly the things associated with Northern Hemispheric Winter). If "Winter" isn't chosen as the theme, the music will help you calm down anyway, and you'll be enlightened in classical music (which makes you a genius in front of your boss, as you'll be able to understand aesthetics better and seem more well-rounded). |

The copyright for those recordings would be for the individual performances. You don't owe any money to Vivaldi's heirs, but you would owe it to the artists who recorded and released the version you download (unless they have waived copyright). |

The problem i see with the last 2 RFU projects was because their too big and the theme's were not very exciting. How about a land of the giants themed RFU?1 map in NYC where the players are giants and the Empire State Building can be detroyed?Or the Sydney Opera House were once again the players are giants and destroy the dome but....a part of Sydney is connected there too so it will be like 2 differant arena,s and type of gameplay in one map |

Too many variables. Although its a good idea, it's only good on paper. This is like the Music theme of RFU4. Music is too subjective, and your first MP experience would be just a remake of the normal MP maps. Really, what could you do? Aside from blindly remaking the map, you can't put anything in. Also, your first experience would only be remembered by you, so anyone else seeing it would be wondering " CENSORED ? This makes no sense to me!".
The stealth idea would be great, actually. Too many MP maps are nothing but run-and-gun. If you're looking for stealth ideas, download WWIIII (World War 4). It's a huge map set in a construction yard-like setting. Aside from minor problems (read my review on it), it's a great stealth map (although the mapper wanted it to be sort of a r&g map (run-and-gun) with just a lot of room to hide in).
The action idea is more workable. Perhaps something similar to deathrun, but not exactly the same. Maybe you have to run through the gauntlet (use continuous damage events) to get to the enemy base. Or maybe have a sort of crazy maze where if you follow the wrong path, you die (use push regions to stop the player from trying to go back). Then, when you get there, you must go back a different route (obviously, this would be a CTF map). I'm not used to working in DM, so the best I can figure is that you have maybe some sort of challenge where to get to the weapons (aside from baton and pistol) you must climb through some crazy tower thing. So, whoever got to the top first could pick you off while you climbed, but there'd have to be some way to force them from the actual holding spot (push region to the outside of the tower?). I'd have to be something with maybe a separate section for weapon-enabled players, or something to protect players who recently got their weapons (so you don't have campers outside of the weapons room).
Anyway, stealth might be the way to go, since it is the best of Pred's suggestions. For themes like other RFU packs, perhaps "inside". In this one, you map what you think (or know) the inside of something is. Say a computer: you'd map the hard drive and processor, etc. For a car, you'd map all the drives and cables and all that. Obviously, the "inside" idea would have to include a "mini" idea. |
