I'm starting to feel like an annoyance! Yet another BIG problem with my map. I did some beta testing with some friends. My custom WAV. sound effects they cannot hear. I can hear them as they pass through the map and open doors, but they cant hear the sound effects. The sound .wavs are ones I extracted from doom 3 in .OGG format, then formatted them at 44000MHZ, stereo, to .wav format. I then added the sounds in red, saved game, and created .VPP. I then open the the .VPP using .VPP builder, and add the custom sounds and save changes to the .VPP. Then if I was to edit anything in the map, I would save it under a new file name so I wouldn't have to keep adding the sounds to the .VPP. What am I doing wrong? |

Sounds like you are doing everything right but let me ask you this; how are your friends sound setting. Maybe they have their sound effects turned down?
This has me a bit confused:
Quoting Assassin | Then if I was to edit anything in the map, I would save it under a new file name so I wouldn't have to keep adding the sounds to the .VPP. What am I doing wrong? | It almost sounds like you are not adding the music to the .vpp that you sent your friends(the modified one)... Are you? |

If that was the case, why am I still being able to hear the sounds in the map, but not them? Its the same map file, other wise one person couldnt join the server. I asked if they happen to have their sound effects volume turned down. The said no. Ill try readding the sounds over again and see if that worked for them. Portal troubles, sound troubles. Whats next!??!? |

If you have an older version of the .vpp in your folder. RED FACTION will still be able to read the music file from that one and the reason why you would still be able to hear it and not your friends.
It's also the reason why I do a separate music .vpp, so I don't have to keep adding the music files every time I make changes on the level...
---------------------------
If you want to use custom sounds in your level, it's easy to do.
First, your the WAV file needs to be in one of the following formats:
- 8 bit at 11, 22, or 44 KHz
- 16 bit at 11, 22, 44 KHz
It's a good idea to stick with 8 bit 22 KHZ or 16 bit 11 KHz for framerate reasons and to keep your level pack file size under control.
Place your custom sound file in a sub-directory under "RedFaction\user_maps\single".
In order to distribute the sounds with your level, you will have to manually add them to the level's pack file or make a separate .vpp file. You can easily do this with the VPP Builder.
Making a separate .vpp file*
---------------------------
You can make a separate .vpp file by
1. Converting your music/sound file to .wave format first
2. Get a .vpp builder from here: Vpp Builder
3. Open up the .vpp builder
4. Click add
5. Located the music/sounds file/s
6. Click ok
7. Now click "save as"
8. Name the file the same as what the file that you just added
9. Save it to your Single folder, it just makes it easier to find and the game can read it from there too.
10. You now have a music/sound file that can give a player the choice of whether or not he wants music while playing your level.
11. Submit the music file with your level .vpp file.
Note*
This is only recommended for use with ambient sounds or keyframe sounds. If you use it for event items, it will crash the map if you (or the person that has your level) decides not to install the music .vpp file.
Also to compress or convert music(from Mp3 need to be in .wave format) to a lower format so you won't such a huge file. Use this program to do it:
dB Power Amp Music Converter
It's simple and FREE, Use a bit rate of 8, it still sounds good at that rate and it keeps the file size small. |

OK, I figured it out. Mononucleosis was right and so were you NCF. Thanks guys I simply just had to add the wav files to the map I was sending out. What NCF explained to me, that explains the reason why I hear the sounds still and not the other players. Also, I didnt know that the quility of the wav would effect FPS. Thank you much NCF. You guys here always amaze me with the help. Also, thank you about giving the tips on the optinonal music in the map. I will use that. Thank you sooo very much! When you think your done, you never are. lol |

Not that it really matters. I am just curious to know if they(your friends) had their sound effects turned down. |

LOL Well, I dont know of anyone who actaully plays games with their sound effect down to the point you cant hear you own gun shooting. It was an suggestion and any to me is worth trying as it helps me learn I have a question about the optional Level music. Must I put in the description that they must have VPP BUILDER installed on their computer and explain how to add it to the map VPP? |

Here is an important tip that you might wanna consider researching about sounds in Red Faction. I havent a clue how to do this
Ive got a Red Editing buddy called Sephiroth, Anyone heard of him?.
Well, I was talking to him about Editing couple of months back and was trying maps out. What I noticed with his map though was the sound files were very small... As if they were *.MP3 format. I asked ric how he archieved this.
But know me... I have forgotten about it and havent a clue how to do it.
But, what I recon is, he renamed the file and put .wav on the end of an MP3 file.
Your guess is much better than mine, but i cannot be 100% sure, that is the way to do it.
I will look into this matter and let you guys know as soon as possible.
Also, the best thing to do with sounds is getting a sound editing program. I Strongly recommend downloading GoldenWave because you can convert sounds to wave to the smallest size you can, But not as small as an MP3 music file.
A 3 minute MP3 music file falls to about 3500kb's depending on the sound quality. A WAVE file falls to about 16mb - 32mb if that music is converted to wave.
That is the problem with Red Faction. Because they used wave formats, we cannot add such big music/sound files to the VPP and post it onto L4Y. This is due to those 56k users who complain that the maps too big
But anyways, im sure there is a way to get wave files the same size as MP3's... If someone figures it out, please let everyone know lol |

Sorry I had to shout out the answer.
Any way, why would the person downloading your file need instruction on how to add the music file? I mean if you add the music to the final version of the .vpp that you submit, they won't have to do anything but extract the file to their multi folder. Only if you make a separate music .vpp will you have to let them know that they should also extract that file to either their multi or single folder. They don't need to know how to add music to the files they download. Trust me if they knew how, they would most likely replace the music that you included with your level. I know I have on a lot of files I have downloaded. If I don't like the music, why should I be force to listen to it. It's also the reason why I have always made a separate .vpp for the music files. This way they don't have to install it or put up with "my weird music".

He got on my FREAKING nerves last night. He kept asking me to up his post count. He was too much trouble, hence the custom rank.

Dude don't take this the wrong way, but what the hell are you on...
All you had to do is read my previous post Post 1322 / 1330 above and you would have the answer you are seeking. Also when using dB Power Amp Music Converter to convert Mp3s to .wav try using a 8 bit(mono) setting and the music files will be much smaller and still sound good in RED FACTION! |

Mmmmmmm, no. There are maps with music events that can be played without the music .vpp installed. Just ask Stu
Btw, why aren't you fragging Nitro in UT?
And I thought Mononucleosis was busy spotting chicks at Venice Beach? |
A common mistake people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools. |

I just copy and paste things nowadays.
Here is another copy and paste method:
Looping sounds In Red Faction:
When_Dead
link* it to
Cyclic_Timer
link* it to
Play_Sound
Then link* When_Dead to Trigger Door (check "Is Auto Trigger" or no check mark if you don't want it to loop)
This method seems to allow MAC user to play this level. It also won't crash the level if the music file isn't used. If you need a picture then open up my map and check the events inside helicopter.
DM - NC-WasteLand
* You link a trigger and event together by using the objects unique id number, or by just selecting the first object, then the second object, and hitting the "K" hot-key.
I hope this helps, if it doesn't blame RED.
Quoting Lace | Btw, why aren't you fragging Nitro in UT?
| I drop a stupid rubber piece into my printer and being a man that did buy the warranty decided to take it apart and fix it myself.
Quoting Lace | And I thought Mononucleosis was busy spotting chicks at Venice Beach? | He was, well so was I. We just got back a short time ago, but this time we were at Huntington Beach and little further. I started late because I had to go to a co-workers house and set up his IP that we get free from work(dial up). That didn't take that long but doing the anti-virus updates(Sophos Anti-Virus), which BTW we get free. After all he is on dial up. I am just glad that I burned the program on a CD at work and didn't have to download the 80megs on his dial up connection.
Back to the printer. I got it working. all I have to do now is put back all the plastic covers back. |
