UVunwarp is one of my pet frustrations, nothing but a nuisance to fiddle around with trying to straighten up textures, on my machine the screen keeps on flicking back and forth between background colors everytime I click on the mouse blinking the vertexs on and off of the texture on and off making it very difficult for me to try to line up the vertex points to get the texture straight with the mouse and this driving me crazy so I don't use it and if the texture is wonky or wrong size, let it like be that if shift S and Shift R won't fix it. |
Red limits breached?, Yep, (20,000 fces and its still going !) |

FIRSTLY I UNDERSTAND YOUR FRUSTRATION BUT THERE'S NO NEED TO SHOUT!!!
OK, What you are doing is moving vertex points out of proportion to the shape of your face.
No matter what shaped face you have, you have to keep the internal angles at each corner the same.
First, always Apply, Apply Map the texture, then go into UV UNwrap.
Here.. I made some pics, but these only apply to Square or Rectangular shaped faces
This is WRONG because you are moving a vertex point out of Synch:-

This too is WRONG, because you are changing the angles of the face:-

You can only move sides by grabbing similar vertex points and moving them along the same axis. In this case from left to right. You are keeping the same angles inside the vertexes so you are ok :-

Another Tip, for ODD-Shaped Faces:-
If you have unusually shaped faces (in that, I mean anything that isn't square or rectangular. A rhombus counts as an unusually shaped face) that you would like to texture then Apply, Apply Map the texture and go into UV UNwrap.
Then Select ALL the vertex points and you can use:-
S + Left Mouse + UP / DOWN with the mouse
To scale all of the vertex points together.
You are not Changing the dimensions of the face so you won't get your wobbly texture Then Simply move it into position
It also helps to align Rock textures to large, heavily vertexed areas. Select multiple faces and use the above method to keep textures closely ligned up
Edit: Just saw this..

Don't use the mouse to move vertex points unless you have ALL of them selected and you are moving the shape or re-sizing it. Always use M+Cursors!!!

Ahother thing that it could be is that you may need an alpha channel in your text .tga files or they are just not the correct size. |

Having re-read his problem it does sound that he wasn't sizing the textures right
256x256 pixels is usually the norm. Just keep it a multiple of 32 and don't have one side outweighing the other in pixels by more than 8:1 (I think it is)
256x128
512x128
512x32 You can't do! More than 8:1!
I think it's 8:1. I stand to be corrected tho

Ah, so it's two vertex points you move at once, not vertex point at a time as with normal vertex mode, no wonder I was getting background switching on and on and going all crazy. And was this mentioned in Red's Window Help Menu on how to correctly move the vertexes for UVunwap and scaling of textures?
noooooooooooooooooo.
So then for a cylinder face, we have to select all the vertex points and scale em. Makes sense now.
There is hardly anything of help in that file.
THAT DOES IT, I'm tired of red's unhelpful little help file, I'm going to write my own and put the instructions on there in that. |

RF_PLAYER987 Why don't you just do one side at a time? Forget about trying to do all of them at the same time. It get confusing as you already found out.

You can enlarge the line in UV Unwrapper by selecting everything with your mouse then hold s and press the arrow keys (or move your mouse)
There is an option to change the color of the lines too. |

I hate when UV unwrap turns all white and you can't see your textures. Then you have to save and restart the program |

Quoting redfac18 | I hate when UV unwrap turns all white and you can't see your textures. Then you have to save and restart the program | Don't run the game/editor under windows98 mode and it won't do that.
Unless you have hyper threading on your PC then you have no choice.

I usually texture a whole room before making the next room. I save lighting/objects/events for last. Just seems more organized to me. |
