Here's a map I've been working on the past few days



Basically just a simple area with a few obstacles. Initially was planned to be a rail arena but I changed my plans.

I may be adding more obstacles but RED giving me a hard time.. started crashing every now and then so I must quit adding stuff and optimize. (edit. looks like most problems have been solved now). It wasn't crashing because it's high on hardware (actually it's very light), it's just some error within the engine.

The map is meant to give the player a nice fragging atmosphere.

Glad to see some responses. Thanks people

I've wanted to make something new and different. It's built up with an unique technique that has never been used before. Quite experimental but it went well. The map doesn't require a single light, it's all pre-rendered. (which takes my PC around 30minutes )

I haven't played the map with anyone else yet, but I get the feeling that this could be real fun, even though the layout isn't really something outstanding at the first look.

But while building up the obstacles I try to keep the gameplay in mind, how players will move around, how they will be seen and when, and how they will avoid or encounter fights. The game flow is really important.

Thanks Frank. Yep..the textures for it take that long. They're going through a stressful raycasting process in another program.
I was a little disappointed when I first saw RED isn't capable of showing the textures in it's full glory due to engine limitations (they are actually ultra high res...but RED creates those ugly color fades) but it's actually good enough.

No worries.
At the moment the vpp is 11,5MB, including a 4min 5,5MB wave file.
I think the final vpp will be around 20MB. (I'm planning to add another music file, if not 2.)

I'll look how much grahical increase the map will gather from 1024x1024 to 2048x2048, but it should be pretty significant. At least the floor/wall texture will be pushed to 2048. I may also check out 4096x4096 just for fun.

Wow...when I look at older shots I notice that I really messed up with the original look of it. LOL

(OLD..the first VERSION) I've also scaled it down a lot. (had to)

As you can see, there's many glass planes around. Making every player a very vulnerable target against the railgun.. so from the testing I've noticed that the railgun has to be moved to a "much harder to reach" position. (or even taking it out)

oh well, I enjoyed the creation Now that I got it shaped I'll move on and will be going to create/port the map for my Mars Wars mod. I'll achieve massive graphical enhancements through the better rendering. I was expecting better quality in Red Faction...but I just can't surpass what the game offers to us. Just a taste of it. Looks like Mirrors Edge (U3 engine, UT3), but it's the old U2.5 (UT2004) engine.

I haven't played it, so I don't know for certain... but I'm pretty sure that keeping the rail is a bad idea just from your description of the map and the screenshots

Hm, I don't think there's a direct translation, but loosely translated it means something like "premier competition" (that'd go for sports).
It consists of the two words King and class. King-class, if that makes any meaning

Hm, yesterday I had the map opened in RED, and I fell asleep. Then I just went to bed. Now how good is that map... (going outside makes me sleepy )

Does that mean that if I replace the textures with lower quality(size), the level will run smoother?

It shouldn't.
I'll yet have to give this map to somebody with a low end PC to test. Gotta find someone first Or maybe I'll use my server. (Athlon 3200, Radeon 9550 is that really low end? :S). ...ok that didn't work - the remote program sucks.

The map doesn't consist of any additional lightmaps. That means it is actually going to be the "lightest" map ever made compared with the look. I'm still improving on it, but with the effects I want to achieve now have pushed the rendering times
The whole map consist of just 13 textures, 6 for the particle emitters alone...and again, no additional lightmaps which would extremely drain the performance on some of those complex brushes.

It is actually lighter on the hardware if you have a map with just 3 big textures, than a map with 100 textures + unknown high amount of lightmaps.

Sorry for taking so long with the release, I kinda got it all done but there's always space for improvement on my funny megatextures I'm using those lighting techniques for the first time. I hope it's some fun to play it online, if not, well then I've created some art at least
