I need help, for some reason, everytime I use my computer, the memory runs dangerously low, I have 2 gigs of memory, but for some reason, fire fox alone its it all up, and it will go down 2 or 3. I am running a advanced system optimizer to help balance my memory, so everytime it goes below 500, it will flip out and fix it, and send it back to the 1200 range. But it's only worked a few times so far, and if I run about 2 programs, my computer will freeze up and crash. This happened shortly after I downloaded the MIRC program. Would this have to do anything with it? For the most part it seems IE and Firefox are what destroy my computer the most. But I don't understand why they're eating up so much memory. Please help someone, finals are soon and some of my homework is online |

Right click the start bar and choose 'Task Manager'. Processes tab and you'll see which process is using the memory.
Firefox is a piece of crap when it comes to memory/general bloat and thats before the bazzillion plugins you can add. Its unlikely to be the cause however of the majority of 2Gb being used up however unless you've done something particularly special. |

Yea I tried that, but I can't find anything suspicious I have even made my computer screen and desktop, I've tried everything, defrags, memory optimizers, chkdsk, Althought I did edit a few options in fire fox, could that be a problem? |

1st delete Firefox
2nd run msconfig and remove most entries from startup. (you could remove all of em)
3rd if you "tried that" and you couldn't find anything eating your memory, then there shouldn't be anything doing that
The task manager shows every app, it's cpu load and memory usage.
Order them after mem usage and look for the highest
Atm here it's (Windows7):
svhost.exe 57MB
Opera.exe 56MB
Steam.exe 45MB
Explorer.exe 20MB
etc |

Deleting FireFox would work much better. |

Thnx for the help guys, but I dont think firefox alone as the problem. IE gives me the same problems, Anything i do eats away my memory, and yes I have run virus and spyware checks, and they all got me nothing. I really don;t want to format .
This all happend shortly, after I downloaded a program called mirc, but i uninstalled it so I don't think thats a problem, and I have taken the steps given to me by one of the links.
Heck, even running windows media player kills my memory. |

lol i know but, I needed it to be a pest. But if I un-installed it, could it still be a problem?
omit the last line. I found a process in my task manager. 2 things
1. AVG has a program, that increases the memory it uses, in HUGE increments. It'll go up a few thousand in a matter of seconds.
2. When i end that process. Firefox, also goes up in HUGE numbers too. Is firefox supposed to be 880,000Kb ? |

Remove AVG and get Avira instead it's a very good virus program and uses next to nothing in memory.
And no firefox should not use that much memory, i suggest that you try Opera and see if you have the same problem with that.
But i doubt that you will have the same problem. |
