Hello dudes!

I like to show off a single player map that I am doodling around with at the moment.
Yes, its the fricken Solar System!
Planets, Sun & Asteriods. You can explore the big massive 8000metre level of orbiting planets around the sun and fly into the sun and live... OMG!

It should be scaled down to at least 800-900 metres Spike. If you go 8.000 metres is
way too much, you'll get distance clipping issues afffecting the map causing things to dissapear into the skybox as you fly around..

Has the map been portaled? How many faces ?

Do you know how to start the player off inside the spaceship (vehicle) automatically
without having to manualy get into it?

Aware of the clipping issue but this will not affect anything as much, due to the fact that in real life as I stand on earth, I cannot see another planet, apart from the moon of course.
Clipping distance is set to 1000 metres so that it will render 1/8th of the map. You still see plenty of the planets on the map.

Also there will be a space station that you will spawn in, rather than get people being put in a ship to use to explorer the solar system. I want people to be able to look out a window and go "oooo that looks cool!"

Look closer. There are a number of planets you can see from here without the use of a telescope.

22,000 faces? Spikey, how is this possible?

My machine is A NEC Powermate X9250
(Intel 2 Quad Q6700 (2.66gz 8M 3072 DDR2 RAM,)
500GB HDD (Sata HDD x2)
Nvidia Gforce 8600 512 MB Turbo Cache

Because I can't build anything in Red that has more than 10,500 faces, as soon as
it hits that number of faces, the editor just bombs out instantly to the desktop
with an "Red application has stopped working" error.

So how come you can bypass the limit without crashing it?

Or is my machine crashing Red all the time when it reaches the limit
because of a Dual Quad Processor issue?

There are tricks, and actually 10,500 faces aren't always the same.

It depends on the texture scales, dimenions and the complexity/"cleaness" of the polygons.

I guess RED will have more trouble with 10,500 faces on multiple spheres, than with normal boxes.

I think the machine doesn't play a role at all. (at least it should be capable to run RF decently - anything besides that is pretty much engine-limit based. In UT3 for example, those 10,500 faces are one character alone)

You can set some brushes to "Detail" to free up more faces.
And you can set them to keyframe to free up even more.

Red Frog, That's not correct.

Here was the end result:

I built a 500 face solid brush to test these 'tricks'

I turned the brush into a mover.
500 / 10500 faces

I dissolved the mover and turned it into a detail brush.
500 /10500 faces.

There was no reduction in the face count.

Therefore, I conclude that turning a brush into a detail or a mover does not
reduce down face count at all. It does nothing.

So again I say unto you, is it my machine?

For the only way that I can get the face count to go down is to combine
the faces together in face mode one face at a time.

But that dosen't answer my main question which was, how did Spikey
get 22,000 faces without crashing Red?

Ok my word choice "free up" was wrong I guess.
By that, I meant if you have 10,500faces or whatever, you can start pumping up the map with detail brushes. Maybe by the double amount.
And then with keyframes again.

Other mappers will approve that.
(those detail/keyframe brushes just require more performance - but I think its not really noticeable, at least on our machines)

Ah I think I get it now.

So instead of building as a normal solid brush or a detail brush.

It has to be built first as an air brush (because that uses no faces up)

and then after building the air brush, then go back and check the flags
is solid and detail and then hit rebuild. and then it should trick
the editor into building it.
