Yes there are huge steps from 8500 to the newer gen 8800 (launched dec, 2006)
You better not go with an 8500. I see you have a 6600GT at the moment.
8500's cost around 80Euros here, which is around the cost of my current one.
It really depends on what you expect to have it playable with.
If you want to play Crysis then the 8500 will most likely not be enough. (you can always play with with low graphics and some special effects on middle with good framerates, though)
UT3 will barely work, while UT2004 will run very good.
An 8500 is not made for the future. I know it sucks but you've got to save some money. |

Why is Geforce 8500 Bad ?
Recommended System For UT3
CPU: 3-4Ghz
RAM: 1024MB
Graphics: NVIDIA 6800GT/Ultra or 7800GT/GTX SLI
7800 ?! Then a 8500 can handle it ? or am i totally wrong, should i better buy a 7800 then ?
i want it to be a bit affordable. |

An 8500 is a low end gpu. 8800GT is more aimed towards the enthusiast/gamer market.
Let's just say that you want to play CSS with an 8500, you get around 80FPS average. Ok, well, plop in that 8800GT, and you get an average of 280FPS :O See where I'm headed with this?
More FPS in games, means smoother play. |

My card is at the same height to a 6800. And the demo ran like CENSORED .
Probably it is my cpu - Athlon XP 3200+
But I believe they just lying there. It brings more profit to sell the game on a wide range of hardware generations, but UT3 just doesn't run well, they have ruined the game.
And I really want to know if that "SLI" is meant to go for every card they are listing there..like "6800GT SLI" and "6800 Ultra SLI"
More fps also means prepared for future games. |

see i never understood this philosophy, because your monitor can only refresh so fast >_>... i think there is a point where it just doesn't matter how fast your card is ... but if you are looking forward to playing new games in the future smoothly then yea, it will matter.
The average LCD monitor refreshes from 8ms to 16 ms ... thats 125 frames per second at best ...
so it really doesn't matter if your card can do 200 Frames per second running UT3, your monitor will not be able to display it .
Then it kinda starts to stumble into the biological limits as well ... movies look fluid to us but they run at mererly 28 FPS! because the shots are blurred over an interval of time, they look continuous to the human eye, however games do not render blurred shots so 28 FPS would be noticeable ...
which makes me wonder how cool it would be if there was a game that rendered motion blur ... instead of throwing out 250 perfectly clear frames a second, why not 50 blurred frames a second instead? the monitor can't display 250 frames, but it can display 50 pre-blurred frames
can you imagine how cool and fluid the game would be
wow, i flew off topic |

I'm not intrested in the future, because next year i can get a job in vacation so money would be less of a problem, so i want gaming for now and games that will be released soon.
I found a kinda cheap belgian site with this to offer :
Price: € 539
Weight : 12.00 kg
Specifications:
* Antec NSK4480 case with 380W Earthwatts Feed
* AMD Athlon64 5200+ Dual Core socket AM2
* Arctic Freezer PRO 64 PWM CPU cooler
* 2048 mb DDRII PC6400
* 160Gb SATAII harddisk
* 20 x DVD-RW Dual Layer
* Gigabyte M52S-S3P socket AM2 Motherboard
* Nvidia 8600GT 256mb DDR3 PCI-express
This should be great if its any good because i could affor a G15 Logitech Keyboard and G5 Mouse Or Possibly The New Sidewinder by microsoft. |

You should imagine it in this way... if you have 250frames per second at a time, you usually gauged this value from an idle position, somewhere in your map.
But right at the moment where the action goes on with dozens of emitters and dynamic meshes etc the framerate will drop. 250 in idle will be a good buffer for any situation, no matter how complex the scene will become.
In no game you will have a constant framerate. With VSync enabled however, you will get a constant framerate..the same as your monitor refresh rate, and a graphics card with more power than needed can keep it at this rate at any time.
You can play Red Faction with 30fps nicely.
But the game offers many different maps, with huge variation in detail so those 30fps will not be enough buffer for every scene.
OOh and you want a new keyboard, mouse and even a new screen, too

heh, Assaultman, not what I was getting at. Basically, at an average of 80FPS, in a moment of gameplay where there is a large gunbattle with nades, smokes, etc. going off, your fps will drop to 30 or less quite easily.
You get the averaged 280FPS card, and you won't have to worry about it even dipping below 100. Thus, always a constant and smooth gameplay. If you play these games competitively, you will see how this is extremely beneficial.
And Ghostkid, I highly suggest you dont get an 8600GT.... 8600GTS at the least. If you are looking for a gaming card, the 86xx series is more a budget gaming solution, much like the 7600 in the 7series of cards. Though, to be more prepared for newer games and all current games that you could play at their best, the 8800GT is perfect. Although, if you are going to grab an 8600, I recommend just getting an 7900GS and overclock it, or an Radeon X1950 Pro if you don't want to overclock. Since you said you'd get more money in the future, get a card like mentioned above that will run the current games available, including UT3 and Crysis, then later upgrade to an DX10 card, as nVidia will soon be releasing the 9series of cards.
Btw, don't go for an Microsoft Sidewinder, not worth it IMO when you could just grab the Microsoft Habu which was created by Razer and design/shape by Microsoft. Also, the G15 keyboard.... make sure it's the 2007 model, it has the new non-skinny keys as seen in the 2005 model. |
