Well he probably wants to go next gen cuz he wants a system that will be able to run Lost Planet.

btw, since you guys mentioned crysis, the system specs really aren't as bad as you think they are:

Minimum
CPU: Athlon 64 3000+/Intel 2.8ghz
Graphics: Nvidia 6600 or ATI X1600 - Shader Model 2.0
RAM: 1GB
HDD: 6GB
Internet: 256k+
Optical Drive: DVD
Software: DX9 with Windows XP / Vista

Recommended
CPU: Dual-Core CPU (Athlon X2 / Pentium D / Core 2 Duo)
Graphics: Nvidia 7800 or ATI X1800 (SM 3.0)
RAM: 1.5GB+
HDD: 6GB
Internet: 512k+ (128k+ upstream)
Optical Drive: DVD
Software: DX9 with Windows XP / Vista

So really you don't even need a DX10 card to run crysis, that is if you care more about performance rather than quality.

Depends on what kind of games he wants to play... My system (see L4Y profile) is suitable for every game I play today. Sure, I might not be trying to run the latest games, but I can run UT2004 at full quality with roughly 100fps, and I can run Gmod at very good quality with 150fps.

The Dx10 games aren't UT2004, neither Half Life 2. Both require little performance standards.

I can buy one of these:

(rebate expires tomorrow)

should I not buy a DX10 card now and wait till DX10 is way more mature or should I save up for more time and then buy something like a 2900 Pro?

DX10 isn't going to be a requirement for some time still. Keep in mind that running DX10 also requires that you be running Windows Vista which, if you've payed any attention to previous topics, you'd know it has its fair share of problems.

well guys I changed some of my options. its just a matter of time until I have the money to buy the rest of the parts, as i had car issues and had to save 2500 bucks to buy a new car.

Anyways, on top of the stuff I bought, I'll be getting:

an Asus P5K-E Motherboard, and then upgrading the cooling later.
Intel Dual Core E2180 Processor, which will have the Cooler Master Hyper TX 2 on it and then will be overclocked to like 2.8 ghz or whatever i can get it to.

So i'll have sick performance for like, basically 250 bucks for those 2 parts together.

The money i'm saving by buying the Asus and the cheap processor will leave me 150 bucks or more for a video card! So at that point I'll probably buy something like an X1900 Pro or something.
