Has anyone bought any of the DX10 ATi cards yet? The problem may by DX10, not the 8xxx series cards. Just a thought...

The problem is in XP as well and not only in Vista so i don't think it is DX10.....

I've got a friend with an 8600 and the same errors occur - it's not DX10... He's on WinXP

My thinking is that the hardware setup of DX10 would cause the problem, not the software. I'd still like to see some screenshots taken from the ATi cards before I make up my mind as to what's causing the problem.

There's your pic for First person weapon disabled... Doesn't make a difference you just don't have a weapon encased in a block of cemebt... I am saddened. But I'm glad to see it wasn't just me. I have an 8800 GTS 640 mb with all new drivers running Vista and DX10...

And in response to the query about running it on the ATI DX10 Lineup... it doesn't work any better there. So it might be DX10... the only thing is...

When you run a game you have to select in options to run in DX10 such as Company of Heroes or World in Conflict.
So I wouldn't imagine Red Faction with its lack of support for DX10 is running it. And like Goober said, running in XP (which also does not have DX10) doesn't make a difference if you have the 8 series card...

So unless someone can find or make a fix, I guess I'm switching my monitor cable to my onboard to run RF. A tad inconvenient I suppose, but my onboard can run it with everything at full anyway.

EDIT: Ok I don't know if anyone can see the thumbnail, I can't for some reason. But I right-clicked and hit view picture (running in Firefox) and it opened up a window that I could see the picture in. Just a heads up...

I changed the picture for you. Try using Imageshack instead of photo bucket. I've never had a problem with it.

heh, it isn't Windows... It IS in someway related to DX10, but, not the entirety of just the DirectX runtime. Basically stated, it's the gpu's achitecture around DX10.

A fix for all you lot is coming soon . I managed to recreate the issue on my 2900 pro, and from that i worked out how to fix it on the 8*** series. So far it has only been tested on the 8600, but the screenshots here:

http://redfaction.levels4you.com/forum.l4y?do=view&t=190331

show it working perfectly, and it should be identical with the 8800 (though currently untested).

Oh, and ati 2900 series never had any problems with RF - don't know where you got that info from Thresher

hmm.... Thought these screenshots may invite some thinking on the part of... some people

Red Faction in Wireframe on the level "SRO"

The same screenshot WITH the nVidia 8xxx series bug applied:

I believe i know what the bug is caused by... The rendering engine. The 8 series card simply does not know how to handel RF. Let me explain:
The way RF renders things... It renders faces differently depending on where you are. For instance... When you look forward, the floor consists of 2 triangles going one way, when you look down at them, they form different face structures in different positions...
Now, before you ask how i know this... Wireframe! When walking around in Wireframe, you see the faces deforming in real-time... It's acually pretty freaky to look at.

Anyway... just thought those pictures would be interesting

I doubt the faces actually deform in real-time, that would require much more CPU power than the minimum (or possibly even recommended) specs for RF. Maybe what you're seeing has something to do with the way portals render, but I don't think the faces deform... Just my opinion, more likely than not its wrong.

Why are you trying to guess why it happens . In basic terms - the nvidia driver doesnt turn everything it needs on. For anyone who doesn't read above the last few posts - the nvida bug has already been fixed for all cards affected in the beta of Pure Faction (an unofficial anticheat/game enhancement). Public beta will be available soon - follow it here: http://redfaction.levels4you.com/forum.l4y?do=view&t=190331
