Reinstalling every six months is a problem? I think it's just a plain good idea, period. I reformat every few months even when there's nothing wrong with my PC; system files get corrupted and I'd rather not wait until I need them to find out they are. Besides completely restoring the OS reformatting gets rid of some traces of... 'questionable' files. Not that I'd have any, though...

Again from a busness standpoint this is just not a good practice. think of it like this for ever hour some one can't do there job, that an hour someone isn't earning money, or it can literly mean working saterday at the office enstead of going on that vacation.

........ hmmm 'questionable' files :O go a head take all that you want. rember the old saying though..... you you look too much you will go blind

Since you pointed out the business thing again I'll point out that it's a home (not office) PC again. I'm well aware of standard business practices when it comes to PCs.

Assman just like to have a fresh nuke every so often and I can appreciate that. I just think that going that route is to much hassle / work for my liking now. I used to do the same thing, however I have always used an antivirus program. I just don't wanna take any chances. You have an obviously above-average understanding of what you're doing so if anyone could take the risks you are, it is you. Not for me tho!!!

No talk about cracked/patched programs beyond the 3099 statement plz <_<

And to go on from DarthJoker's "business" statements, I'll tell you an old saying that my employer told me when I was over the server department at his company. "You get what you pay for." Still known and proven fact. Nod32 is something that cannot be compared to ANY free A/V currently available.

Whilst I have tested many A/Vs, including all the freely available ones, they miss a lot of which the paid programs find. I noticed you mentioned LavaSoft's free version of Ad-Aware, if you compared their free version against the Professional paid for version, the free has fewer virus definitions. The only decent trials out there would probably have to be Nod32 and I believe Panda. Main reason being that they are the fully functional programs themselves, only trial limited by 30days.

Mac's do not have many PC viruses because they cannot run many PC programs.

Depends on which way you look at it, Macs are sometimes a good thing, but sometimes a horrible thing

Actually the intel macs can run every PC program but that means you would have to run windows.
Most of us mac users get a mac so we don't have to use windows but we always have the option of rebooting into windows should we please.

So yes you are right in saying macs can be a horrible thing - WHEN RUNNING WINDOWS

Linux/Unix is open source; you develop your own OS practically, therefore no one except you knows your code... so they cant hack it as easy as a well known OS such as Windows or Mac OSX.
