Quoting Assman15 | I'm very protective of my PC. If I'm not the one using it the person who is knows enough to not cause any accidental harm. What's the worst that'll happen anyways, get a virus? Reformat; problem solved. |
Being in the It feild my self i can tell you that REFORMATING is a last resort option. basicly because it takes too long (i'm able to in stall xp pro with all service packs and updates in under two hours... and thats way too long from a busness standpoint. rember in busness time is money) now the last time i had to reformat my pc was because of not paying atention to what i was doing (acidently deleted the wrong key in my registry :O ). other than that i haven't had to reformat my pc in over six years. and also if you paly games (your on this forum si i asum you do) then you must download mods. which is what this threed is about. rember that even though the site is trusted thay are not always virus spyware free, such as the case with this server assest mod. or what ever it is. (actuly come to think of it my star wars beta might have bee infected, but i'm guessing l4y have great protection or else it wouldn't have been posted)
BTW the only way to keep from geting your pc infected with viruses is to simply not take it out of the box. even store bought software can be infected............ usaly doesn't happen but every once in a while.......... |

Quoting Assman15 | The best anti-virus is not being ignorant. Don't visit questionable sites and don't run everything your internet browser prompts you to. I don't use anti-virus software; I don't get virus' because I know better. |
Sorry.. not true anymore my friend. All you have to do to get a virus is connect your Cat5e cable. Alot of viruses spread by hopping IP's.
Example: Say your PC is infected with a virus that hops IP's, and your IP address is 24.218.64.20 .(just for aguments sake) The virus may pick any other computer that has the IP beginning with "24.218" 25% of the time and send itself there (if they, like you have no antivirus software); or spread to IP's starting with "24" 25% of the time; or spread to IP's starting with "21.218.64" 25% of the time and finally the last 25% of the time the virus picks a completely random IP address. This is how the "Sasser Worm" spread itself a few years ago. So you may be a completely responsible "internet surfer" and not be a sucker at all for clicking on those banners that say "Click here to claim your prize!!!" but because your neighbour _IS_ and you have no antivirus program you could very well be infected!
While I am an advocate of saving money and I myself use AVG free on both of my clan servers; for the average joe, a program like Norton that you pay good `ol cash for is a better idea. Here's why: AVG free (as per Grisoft's own admission on their website HERE) does not have any kind of firewall, anti-spam, or anti-spyware while Norton does (or the $29.95 pay version of AVG). Now before you start to tell me about SpySweeper, Spybot or AdAware, I say again - average joe user. 90% of the computers I fix have all of these programs on them. They work well but the average joe doesn't set them up properly to actively scan for rogue programs or doesn't keep them up-to-date. Norton is a great all-inclusive program that takes care of it all and does it by itself. Yes, you pay more for it; but it works. If it didn't Symantec wouldn't be one of the most trusted antivirus solution providers in the world. And no.. I do not work for Symantec! |

Reintsall if you have all your disk, 1hr30minutes...not a big deal.
Dont use a free antivirus....why would you buy one if the free one protected you from everything the pay one does ? makes sense doesnt it
Use E-Trust or Sophos are just two that are ok. |

Sorry, will never use Norton. I use McAffee at home, Haven't been online for close to a year on that machine, but when I was my AV was almost 1 year out of date and have still not recieved a virus yet. I actively use Ad-Aware almost every 2 weeks when im online. Also update it every 2/3months.
McAffee may not be the best, I have heard AVG is good... BUT Its never done me wrong yet. |

Well, I've been using Nod32 for a while now and I don't think I'll go back to McAfee or KasperSky. KasperSky was nice, but... it was slooooooow. |

I trust Norton 06, but it is so slow compared to Nod32...
Since I picked up a copy of Nod32... Ill never go back to Norton until Nod32's subscription wears out (unlikley).... |

That's what routers are for, to stop unwanted traffic. If a broadcasted virus hits my router it's just going to stop unless it already has a destination which, without knowing my internal IP structure, is unlikely (not impossible, just unlikely). As for reformatting; I can backup and reformat my computer in under an hour, it's really no big deal and by no means a 'last resort' on my end. What you consider a final option is something I consider first. Granted, that's not always the best solution in the business world, but it's a home computer, time doesn't equal money here. |

To add to the NOD32 party.
The best thing about it is you don't even know its running, but it is because on a few occasions its told me about a virus as I've gone to download the file, it also is always doing constant system scans and doesn't slow down your computer (well noticeably anyways)

Why would anyone bother writing a virus for a mac?
Viruses are generally made to infect a large amount of people |

Quoting digital_ruler | But seriously, the next time I reinstall (a few weeks actually), I'm going to make a 5gb partition for Windows XP and the rest of my drive for data. |
That's a good idea.. I do that myself. ..But make the Win XP partition bigger. Mine is 7GB and I'm currently low on space (Over time it just seems to grow!) On my friend's PC we did 10 and that worked out well... But on another we did 15 and he later upgraded to Vista which requires 12! If you think you may ever go to Vista, make it at least 20!

With all due respect, that is hardly a reliable way to stop viruses. Almost everyone has routers these days and yeah they pretty much all have built-in firewalls too... but that doesn't stop everything. As for your ip structure in your house.. I can tell you what that is, so I'm sure that some nerdy pimple faced virus programmer woudn't either. Where should I start... If you have a Belkin router your router's ip is 192.168.1.1. Your computer is 192.168.1.2. For D-link, the router is 192.168.0.1, and the PC is 192.168.0.2. If you are smart and set a static ip, that doesn't matter either because a virus can still check 100's of ip numbers per second and anyone knows the 1st 2 octets are 192.168 most of the time. At least download AVG or something! I challenge you to check your computer online here (Click "Start" under virus detection.) and post a screenshot of the results! |

Mac's do not have many PC viruses because they cannot run many PC programs.
Depends on which way you look at it, Macs are sometimes a good thing, but sometimes a horrible thing |

Darkman042:
I think you may have misread that; I said routers stop broadcast virus', not all of them. Targeted virus' will still be able to pin-point machines, but broadcasts can't get through routers without some work. As for my IP structure, wrong. I do not use the default structure for my router, I've altered it for security (being Net+ I should know enough about security to keep myself out of trouble ). As you an see, I still take some steps to secure my computer, anti-virus just isn't one of them.
Tried that virus scanner, but it requires IE 5.0 or higher, no wonder it always picks up virus'. The only IE I feel remotely safe using is IE7, but it runs horribly on XP so I just go and get my 3rd-party browser of choice.
Mac Lovers:
I've got nothing against Macs. They're clean (mostly ), safe, and are very good at what they do; which brings me to my only problem with them. They don't do much. Not much of my wants/needs anyways. If I were only into average user type stuff I'd have no problem having a Mac. But being a hardcore gamer and amateur programmer, I need the little extra push a PC gives. If I ever have enough to buy two top-of-the-line machines, I'll be sure to get one of them in the Mac flavor. |

lets not forget that those of use that use linux are also low on the list for bein infected with viruses
however being that most all programs from spreed sheets to game are designed for the evil that is MICROSOFT. i can probly garentee that anyone who is a true gamers also has a windows system. and if all you use is a firewall then you are more than likly reinstalling your system every six mounth's. i how ever was goin on a seven year roll with no reformat or reinstall and i even on ocation will open all my e-mail. and click on ever internet link i can find..... why you ask?? well because i'm MAD thats why.... serusly though, it's because i really want to see how good a job thes so called free... and even the paid anti virus, spy, ad-ware, malware, fire walls are. and if i hadn't acadently deleted the wrong line in my regeistry mounth's ago then my seven year roll would'v continued.
The point is protection is key...
P.S. life is unpredictible so for the next few weeks looks like i'm back to good old dial up |
