Well recently I was talking with a guy I know on msn. He has created a program that can completely remove modders from all RF servers. This kind of program could save every non-cheater in RF from the cheaters but it can also be used to remove non-cheaters from all servers. He tested it the other day. The person that got on his bad side can't play RF multi player any more. Even with a reinstall and ip change he still cannot play RF thanks to the program running.
Good but dangerous waters are in RF's future. |

I know the guy of which you speak of. He told me and tested it while I was on team speak. He also is working on a program that would download files that you need to join a server. Which means no more not being able to join a server because you don't have the map. It will be more like I can't join the server because I have too many files now I have to remove some that I hardly play.  |

Wait, how does this work? RF Has no CD key, how can it track you and stop you from playing?  |

Counter Strike Source is like that if you are missing the file it will download it straight from the server but if you have a current version that differs from the one downloading then you wont be able to join

wouldnt it be able to Ban IP address? dont need CD key to ban Ip addy
now all i want is RF to be able to be edited using SDK, I find Hammer Editor Easyier than RED ed now |

Also, does this banning take place in all the servers, or just the one? If it's just the one, there's nothing special here, other than a breach of security and some slight criminal stuff.
If s/he can ban you from all the servers, then this is definately something most likely illegal. To do this would involve either hacking the client to be unable to connect, or to hack the server to ban the IP. The way I'm thinking, the first would be it.
Because this couldn't be done without reverse-engineering the code, and because it is so destructive to the RF community; Volition or THQ (as though they'd care, though) could bring him/her up on criminal charges for tampering in a serious way with intellectual property.
It's one thing to mod the game to make it check for the proper ui files and whatnot, but it's another to completely damage the code so that it won't function as it is intended to. Quite obviously, this is definately where any reputable software company would draw the line. They might be modders destroying a server, but they're still (supposedly) paying customers who deserve to use the product as it was intended.
Although I doubt anything will come of this, as Volition's pretty much dropped off contact with us players, and THQ never cared to begin with; had this happened a while ago, the cracker who designed this program would definately face a few fines and perhaps some jail time.
PS The idea of downloading maps off the server is great, but there would have to be an option to timeout the upload after some time. Otherwise, the server would lag too much if too many were missing the file. Also, is the file permanently saved, or temporarily? |

Vidi44 without quoting your question that you asked. I was told of the details as well. It not only bans the person from "your server" but it bans them from THE ENTIRE NETWORK. Which basically means that person would not be able to join any servers unless he changed his IP address. Which is what cheaters do all the time. This tool is very dangerous in the wrong hands and quite possibly illegal.

As far as the file download goes. The files would need to be at a site/server where the said files are to be located. The program would then download said file/level and extract the compressed .vpp out of the .zip file. Install it to your multi directory. The program would also shut down Red Faction before it installed it. After then file installation/extraction, the program would restart Red Faction so that it would now read the "said" recently installed file/s.
As far as I know it would also take you to the server itself or it would just take you to the game server browser window. THAT my friend is the one thing I forgot to ask.

Anaways, I would like to state that this program would be better off if it wasnt released. Who knows, there is always that one person who will give it to someone else, then someone else, etc... |

I agree D2k. Well the file that would block players from seeing the list of servers. There you have it. It doesn't really ban the players/cheaters. It prevents them from logging on the the master server, which means that unless they had the server saved as a favorite, they would never see a server on the list.
Oops I just gave away the bug on it and how other players/cheater would be able to get around. Lets just hope they never find out about it.  |
