So I take it that if you go to this page it won't help either?
How is Port Forwarding Configured? <--NetGear Web page

Instructions for RP614, MR814, WGR101, WGR614, WGT624, WGT634U, WGU624, WGM124, or WPN824
These routers do port forwarding by assigning port numbers to a "service" that is associated with the application you want to run.
To Let an Application Use Port Forwarding
1. Type the router's address in an Internet browser's address bar. (By default the router's address is 192.168.0.1). The Setup Wizard appears.
2. Enter the router's username and password.
3. Under Advanced, click Port Forwarding on the left menu bar.

A Port Forwarding Screen (Varies Slightly by Router)
4. From the Service & Game (or Service Name) pull down, select the service that you will host. The services the router knows about are listed here. If the service does not appear in the drop down, add a service as described in the next section, then return to this step.
5. Enter the IP address of your local server in the Server IP Address box.
6. Click Add.
7. Click Logout to exit from router settings.
To Add a Service for These Routers
To define a service not in the Service Name list, determine what port numbers are used by the service.
1. Click Add Custom Service.
2. Enter the first port number in an unused Start Port box.
3. If only one port number is to be forwarded, enter the same number in End Port. To specify a range of ports, enter the last port to be forwarded in the End Port box.
4. Enter any name you choose for the service.
5. Click Apply. |

Quoting Sophie | i still cant get over that every one thinks that you cant run a server and play on it with the same computer am i the only one that knows how?? |
I have to agree with that, the amount of people who say "i cant host and play on the same computer" and then continue to argue that you cant is amazing. |

What do you mean you don't know, did you forget my previous post...? Well did you?
Here let me refresh your memory.
Quoting NoClanFrank | To find out what your internal IP address.
Do this:
1. Hit your windows key or click the start tab on the bottom left corner.
2. click Run
3. Type in cmd /k ipconfig or cmd /k ipconfig /all for more information, which you won't need unless...

From there you will see a black DOS box(see above ). There is where you will find your internal IP address.
Be warned that unless you have defined a certain IP address to a PC. The internal IP address might change every time you turn on and off your PC. |

I doubt that you can establish a static IP without the help of NTL. |

I still don't know why you would need to get a static IP to create a server. Are you using a satellite Internet connection or wireless? |

"the internet gate way did not accept your changes
if problem persists, you must change internet gateway settings directly, usually by using the web interface for the gateway
for more information contact the gateway, manufactuer"

This is going to be a long post, but read it all carefully and follow my instructions EXACTLY and you'll be up and running.
You need to read look more carefully at what I have written.. use the PICTURES as a guide. You are selecting your INTERNET GATEWAY. NO. DON'T. You are looking for (under network conenctions) LAN or High Speed Internet ->Local Area Connection. .. okay, here's a replay; customized just for you!
First from the start menu click on control panel. If your control panel looks like this one with a blue background, click classic view which I have circled.

Then.. double click the network connections icon. (looks like a globe that is "plugged in")

Then you'll see this window. It has the icon for your network card. (network connection) It can be called anything like NoClanFrank said, but this is where it will be, and the icon should look like this one. You'll want to right-click and select "properties."
THIS is where you went wrong.. you want to right click ONLY on Local Area Connection. (has an icon like 2 networked PC's) You clicked on an icon that looks like a PC infront of a globe that is called "Internet Connection" or Internet Gateway." NO! NOT THAT ONE!

This is the list of protocols I mentioned. Select
"Internet protocol (TCP/IP)" Then click the properties button.

That will take you to where you set your static ip as I mentioned in the other thread. Select "use the following ip address" and put in the ip address you wish to use. Use one that is higher than what your router will assign. A good idea is to go to a command prompt( Start>Run>type "cmd" and push enter) and type ipconfig and you'll see what your router-assigned ip is.
Usually with your router it starts at 192.168.1.2. If I were you I'd assign 192.168.1.120 for the first PC (main computer, we'll say) and add 1 to every one after, so i.e. the next PC after that would be 192.168.1.121,(put that on your server) then 122 and so on.
For subnet mask enter 255.255.255.0 .
For default gateway you enter the ip address of your router. The ip address of your router is 192.168.1.1 by default.
Preferred/Primary DNS is set to the same ip as your router. (192.168.1.1 again.)
Alternate/Secondary DNS is left blank.
Click "OK" and reboot. (you may be prompted to re-boot anyway.)
.
Hopefully between this, my earlier post and the links we've provided you'll get it. Now I would also like to mention that your Static internal IP only (as mentioned earlier) shows up in RF when you are accessing it from your local network; ie a computer at your place conneted to the same router. The rest of the world sees your external ip. If you want to find out what that is a really easy way is to go to ]www.whatismyip.com and it shows it right on the screen. Another thing to note is that if you have multiple computers on the router, you have to specify which one in your port forwarding is the one for your RF server. Example, you just set up the server as 192.168.1.121, then when a call for port 7755 goes through your router make sure that it is set to forward to 192.168.1.121 for that UDP port. If you don't, I think the router will just try to send it to the lowest ip on the network. If you use teamspeak, then you'll have to set up forwarding for that too!
Port forwarding.. you don't know how to do that either????
I anticipated that.
The following are excerpts from your instruction manual, available >>>>>HERE<<<<<
I am assuming you took the "initial configuation" steps as outlined in the manual. If not.. read up!
Logging Into Your Router
To log into your router after you have configured your router, do the following:
1. Type http://www.routerlogin.net in the address field of Internet Explorer or Netscape®
Navigator.

Figure 3-2: Log in to the router
2. When prompted, enter admin for the router user name and password for the router password,
both in lower case letters (or enter the password you chose if you changed it during the setup
in “Initial Configuration” on page 3-2).
Note: The router user name and password are not the same as any user name or password you
may use to log in to your Internet connection.
A login window like the one shown below opens:

Figure 3-3: Login window
3. Click OK and the resulting window below appears:

Figure 3-4: Login result
Now you'll see in that last pic I have Port Forwarding/Triggering Circled in red? Click on it! (not the picture, in your router, silly!) Onward to Port Forwarding!
Configuring Port Forwarding to Local Servers
Although the router causes your entire local network to appear as a single machine to the Internet,
you can make a local server (for example, a web server or game server) visible and available to the
Internet. This is done using the Port Forwarding menu. From the Main Menu of the browser
interface, under Advanced, click on Port Forwarding to view the port forwarding menu, shown
below.

Figure 6-1: Port Forwarding Menu
1. Click the Add Custom Service button.
2. Enter the first port number in an unused Starting Port box.
3. To forward only one port, enter it again in the Ending Port box. To specify a range of ports,
enter the last port to be forwarded in the End Port box.
By default for Red Faction put 7755 in both boxes.
4. Enter the IP address of the local server in the corresponding Server IP Address box.
So if you set up your server as 192.168.1.121 enter that here!
5. Type a name for the service. "RF Server" works fine.
6. Click Apply at the bottom of the menu.
WHEW!!! That is IT my friend! Step by step illustrated instructions specifically for YOUR ROUTER!! If THAT doesn't make it all work then call up Geek Squad and have then do it for ya! That's all I've got! Good Luck! |
