Ok, I've come across more and more recent complaints about the manual update(s) not working... Anyone have any solutions to this?

Yes I have a solution:
Don't buy a newer computer for an old(but still fun) game like Red Faction.

I believe this is the same issue that someone had posted here @ L4Y about... and I don't believe the issue was resolved..

It's been over a year since I updated my RF to 1.2 on my PC.

Is this a problem relating to the location of the RF game itself? ie; D: drive versus C: drive? Is the updater looking specifically for the C:/games/Red Faction folder?

I don't know, I cant remember - so thats why I am asking.

Well, it may be that they are not installing the manual update correctly then I suppose. But it's more than just one person that I know of.

Thanks for the input.

I suddenly wonder:

Is it an issue of language version?

Is it an issue of software firewall preventing the update?

Or is it an issue of the routers firewall preventing the update?

Or is the host of the update not hosting the update anymore?

Any confirmation or experiments to prove or disprove any of these is called for. Any one wanna uninstall RF and reinstall it and see what happens?

I am sorry to say, I too volunteer not too as well...

My PC has special powers - very special powers. If I try to do anything drastic with it - it will supernaturally screw itself over for about a month.

Then I have to bond with it again, nurture it, coax it to come out from its comatose id collapse.

I just dont have the time in my life to devote to this unhealthy codependent relationship right now.

So I cant uninstall my RF. My PC might not survive the physiological change.

Well, seeing as this topic is about manualupdates I really don't think servers, firewalls or routers are the problem. In order to manually update you first need the file on your harddrive. Recently I reinstalled Red Faction on a copy of Windows Vista and updated completely successfully (I've never had problems on Windows XP either). Perhaps these problems all have something important in-common. Hyperthreading/hypertransport, dual-cores, non-standard network protocols, software/virus, permissions... anything of that sort?

I took the plunge and uninstalled the game. I used a third party program that deleted the registry as well. I check to make sure it was completely gone/removed. Then I deleted the main Red Faction folder that got left behind any way. I re-install the game, guess what, the in-game updates aren't working. When I try to join I can't find any servers. My version was too old, not the current one

I guess my days of playing Red Faction are over.

Oh wait, let me try and update it through the set up menu(launcher screen)... Dang it I am getting this error:

I guess the company is not supporting the updates any more. I guess those that have the game already updated should be happy that they did it before the support was gone.

I guess my Red Faction days are over.

Oh wait, this site has the file available for download. I'll try that...
I'll download it.
I'll install it.
I'll join a server and get fragged many many time.
I'll...I'll... Dang it, I can't open the file.

I guess my Red Faction days are truly over.

*Thinks of why the file isn't working, opening*

Y A Y

I found the problem. The site messed up the files a while back when we changed host servers. All I did was right click on the properties and rename it to rf120.exe. Guess what, it worked. I did the update and got a list of server...Current servers. I was able to join, I didn't play but the whole point was to see if the update work and it did.

Being staff(admin) here at this site does have some privileges. I replaced the current file that wasn't working with one that is. In case somebody decides to re-download the file again. I had to put it in a folder to compress the .exe compress file. It's the only way the site won't remove the .exe from the file. You know if it is in another folder then compressed.

With all that said, the new file is available here:

Red Faction 1.20 patch (North American).zip

Same location as before but the file has been replace.

I have some bad news for some of you.
I CAN PLAY RED FACTION!
Just when you thought you had finally gotten rid of me.

I can't believe you wussies* were afraid to remove Red Faction.

Assman15 you beat me to the post.
I was busy typing.
I took have Windows XP professional and I did, check to make sure I had the latest updates from Microsoft itself. I didn't have a problem other than the one described above.

This is an extraordinary event. Such a small update download is no longer being hosted?

Sure its great L4Y can host the update, but wot about Joe Shmoe who has not played in years or even heard of L4Y. On a whimsie he installs it, attempts to play, cant get in anywhere and figures. "Maybe I should update my game." Only to discover that the update is really an error.

Thanks for your efforts Frank. Civilization owes you a great debt.
