Hapa "Hoser" Hanu you are fairly new to the game.
Sorry I just had to say that.

Any way, this isn't the first time this event has happen. The game update has been down before. Whether it's down for good or not we may never know since good since are days are numbered. How high that number is only the man upstairs knows.

Last time it happen, it might have been down for a while but we didn't learn about it until somebody posted that it wasn't working at this site.

The .EXE issue on this site is one that is been known for a while. it's just that it's hard to find out how many .exe or self extracting files are on the site that need changing. I've changed a few already but not until members complained about them not working.
It's an easy fix but more time consuming than any thing else.

Oh yeah after they update the game, the "new" players that are running on Windows XP will need to do this, or should I say, they should do this:

Setting a Program To Compatibility Mode
To enable Compatibility Mode for an application

1. Locate the program. Click Start, click All Programs, and then right-click on the program and click Properties.

2. Click Compatibility to open the compatibility mode dialog shown in below.

3. Click in the box to put a check mark beside Run this program in compatibility mode for:.

4. In the drop down menu below it, select the version of Windows that you want to try. The choices are:

• Windows 98/Me

5. If your program has problems handling the higher quality video of Windows XP, you can also select one of three other restrictive settings on the video:

• Run in 256 colors — This forces the entire screen to 256 colors while the application is running

• Run in 640x480 screen resolution — This forces the entire screen to 640x480 resolution while the application is running

• Disable visual themes — This disables all visual themes while the application is running.

6. Click OK to close the window

I've had some troubles downloading the "MOTD" file as well, but it usually worked 5-10 minutes later without making any changes to my system. Perhaps you tried to update durring the off-hours of the site and they were performing maintenance or something? Anyways, I'm glad we got this resolved, for the most part.

PS: I've never had to set my compatability for Windows XP (or even Vista). Setting compatability mode shouldn't be necessary unless Red Factions begins to run oddly, but it should run just fine on XP/Vista as-is.

Yes, I don't have my compatability set different, and it runs fine ^_^

I just looked at your profile and I saw this:
Graphics 128MB ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. Which lead me to believe that it might be an nVidia only issue. Then I I saw that Sobe's is a Leadtek Nvidia GeForce 6600GT so that rules out that.

I have a PNY Nvidia GeForce 6800 GT and I had to run the game in Window 98 mode and I had to disable my hypherthreading or never play Mad_ferret's AATW 2. With the hypherthreading enabled, that map ran horrible. I dislike even having it on my multi folder. Then I did some video test and I found out that I got a better video score with it disabled. I got a higher CPU score with it enabled. I chose the higher video score over higher CPU score since I play games for often than do any photo shop style work on the PC.
Now AATW2 run fine and it's a pleasurable honor playing that map.

LOL I just noticed one thing. Since I uninstalled REd Faction and reinstalled it, I am not running it under Windows98 Mode. I checked the box right now since it can't hurt it. Before, my video of other players would be choppy if I didn't do it. Who knows it might have been a nVidia driver issue or maybe...maybe Microsoft fixed it in one of the many many updates I have done.

F.Y.I. the nVidia drivers that I am currently using are/is:

Version: 91.31
Release Date: June 23, 2006
WHQL Certified

Do not run virus protection software in the background while installing the drivers. This prevents the driver from configuring itself properly.

Before installing new drivers make sure you uninstall all NVIDIA display drivers from the Windows Control Panel.

Browse to the Start Menu >Windows Control Panel >Add/Remove Programs and search for "NVIDIA Windows Display Drivers" or "NVIDIA Display Drivers" and select remove.

Yes well, three of those years I played in LAN only games. Then some of my LAN buddies disseappeared into military service over time, but others are coming back this fall!

Last summer is when I made my internet debut with names like:

CEO Executioner
Your Inner Child
Captain Spiffy
Amish Commando
Klingon Psychiatrist

...the list goes on and on...

But! Tragic none the less that the automatic update is not working!

Assman actuly most of the newer comps ( like my own ; dual-core with xp pro ) need to run RF in Win 95 compatibility , otherweise it may get some heavy lag ingame.

I might be wrong aswell

I didn't say compatability settings weren't needed. I was simply saying you don't need to set them unless you start experiencing problems. Otherwise, it's just a waste of time.
