Hey all!
I wondered about that, does hosting a RF dedicated server require a lot of memory / bandwith? Let's say.. for a 8 players CTF server? [Running on Linux] |

Well, what kind of connection do you have?! |

5 000 Kbit/s, Pentium III 600 MHz, 512MB RAM, 20gb hard drive.
But hey btw it's just for test purposes, nothing too scientific
Basically, I will try to install RF server on Linux (if I can find the stuff needed) and run the server a couple of days to see how it goes. |

I don't know the upload speed. If I ever find it I'll tell you. But me must be something like 768. It's written 5000 download. |

You can find out a little more realistic speed here. You have to remember that speeds that ALL internet providers say up to, which means it won't always be that fast.
Speed Test
Other useful sites for tweaking your internet connection are these sites:
http://www.dslreports.com/
http://www.speedguide.net/
But if you are only hosting an 8 player server, with a 256 upload speed you should be fine. |

Yea, I can host a 12 person server on 256 upstream with no issues of lag. Unless a lot of the users are on dialup.... |

What also matters with your internet provider is how and through where they route your connection. For instance people got a better ping when I was on cable and now that I switched to DSL(contract expires at the end of June) they tend to get a higher ping. On some servers that I've played on(UT2004) I got the same ping with either provider.
I liked cable better but they had too many outages for their broadband and digital cable. I'll have to try them again in June to see if they fixed their problems, which I doubt since they are making one of the street near here wider and they don't plan to finish until 3/2007.
My Last Result:
Download Speed: 2821 kbps (352.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 721 kbps (90.1 KB/sec transfer rate) |

All right I got the test done,
2424kbs download
638kbs upload
but waht I wonder about is the amount of bandwith used by a RF server, for example, for a full room. (Will it lag if I use another computer on the internet while the server is up for example)
Yeah I got RF standalone dedicated server running on Linux here, the only problem is that it cannot connect to the master server . If you have some ideas, go ahead! |

The only time you might get some lag is when the other people download large files. That was a nice thing about cable, I never had that problem because my download speeds were almost 8megs. |

Okay! Gonnna test that out! I'll bring you some news if I get it to work online (right now I can only acess to the server by entering the ip adress in lan only, the thing cannot connect to the master server ) |
