Just to let everyone know... I play RF A LOT... my name probably isn't known as well as most but hey, I'm there :-)

Anyway, just wondering... Why do we have all these sweet custom maps... and why do people spend their valuable time MAKING these kick @$$ maps if no servers run them? I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to join the server and see people in the redfaction.info server. That server runs some pretty dern good maps but no one's ever in it. I see all these servers and also see no one in them ever... nobody plays any maps but the boring, default deathmatch levels that come with the game. So yeah, why even bother making maps like IAC's {DVL} Desk, Rose City, Island Jam... etc... when virtually no one plays them?

Ok, there's my vent... interested in responses...

Well, why do people map anyway? i mean you cant charge for them...
People map (Incuding myself) just for personal enjoyment... Sure its an added bonus when people like your maps, but still, you wouldnt spend your time mapping if you didnt like it, but others did. You map for you, and id say there will be people mapping with RED long after no one plays the game.

At any given moment there are more servers than players. A lot of players are unaware of the ease of use of custom maps. A lot of players are apathetic when it comes to custom maps. Its hard to educate the masses remaining RF players.

I have undertaken a project to bring together various servers in one place so that folks can review the details in casual convenience. To date there are five servers included in the Dinner Forum's Server Section. But honestly some servers are never occupied and should be abandoned. But it is up to each server to determine that.

The great thing about redfaction.info is that Stu actually provides downloads trouble free at his web site. Kudos Stu!

From my own perspective, I will continue to run Dinner because I don't know any better. Usually every weekend I throw a LAN party with 2 or more other guys and if other folks want to join us - that's very cool.

Sincerely, i don't know!

They should stop and let that old game map editor rest in peace.

Ah that is where you are wrong. Well the example that you have named. Rose City by MECHANICO and Island Jam by Tico Torres do get played a lot. I don't know what servers you are playing but I have many times join the server while these two maps are playing. Island Jam is my favorite Tico Torres map. The other one lacks armor and since the only weapon is the sniper rifle, it needs it BADLY. I for one don't run that level for that reason, when MECHANICO made that level for RFU, I told him about it, then he decided to remake a night version of it and he still kept the weapons and amor the same.
Well that as far as IAC's {DVL} Desk, he knew when making it that it probably wasn't going to get played much because of the low frame rate most players would get while playing this level. I mean it takes several seconds to load the level, what did he think this way. UT2004!
The fact is, if you want to play custom maps. It would be a good idea to play in one of these four servers:

1. Redfaction.info
2. <L-S>Amero's
3. Dinner is serve
4. Hempland

Most other server I've notice play default maps only or microfaction maps.

I know none of my maps will ever be played buy I still map because it's fun and it gives me something to do when I'm board. The main reason I made {DVL} IACs Desk 2 though was just to see how far I could push RED and how good of graphics I could get out of the Red Faction Engine. I probably could have gone farther but I got tired of working on the same map day after day. Although I wasn't expecting to get much reviews, it's still depressing to only get 5 reviews even though there's almost 120 downloads..

Rose City and Island Jam have been played a lot of times some years ago.
Dude these maps got old. Which doesn't mean they got bad, but there is just SO MUCH to play, people forget about these older maps and play the newer ones instead.

You cannot have every map, thats the reason why it got very hard to have the maps the servers are hosting. - Mappacks and maplists on homepages help on this.

I haven't played Desk2 myself. But just look at the filesize.
I don't really think that a map should be that big. I think IAC has used too hi quality wave files and much too big textures for the map. RFs engine is weak, and many players use slow connections because RF is pretty lag-free. Noone of them would wait that long just for "another map"... well at least thesedays, times have changed.

Well I have a 77mb version and a 25mb version the only difference is lower res textures but the maps are still compatible with each other... or is 25mb still too big? And the music file is a separate download so it doesn't increase the file size.

Yes 25mb is too big. I'm not going to wait 2 hours+ to play some level once by myself to see what it has in it because no other servers run it.

Try mabye 5mb or below, then more people (me) would download it.

Lazy 56ker. The rfl alone is about 5mb rared Trying to keep the map under 5mb would only allow a few custom textures... and default textures suck.

Lazy? You call a 2.5 to 3 hour long download bieng lazy?

I would have broadband, but thanks to the area I live in, I can't. Pick on people about things that they can actually help.

I was on 56k most of my computer life I just got high speed last summer. I used to download lots of huge files. Depending on the size I would either let it go over night or if it was only gonna take a few hours I would start it then do something that doesn't require internet like map and stuff like that until it was done downloading. Or watch a movie or TV for a few hours.

I know modmaker91's pain. When I first started on the Internet Scene. I was on dial up. It was and still is a free service from my work as long it's a local call from your home, which mine is.
My connection would disconnect after only 4 hours. Then I had to dial in again. The only thing that helped me were download mangers, which this site doesn't really support unless you are a gold member. Even then, I haven't tried one as yet. I don't really need them any more since I got broadband.

Many of the files that I have on this site no longer have the music files in them. I did that right before the last time I left as staff here. I did it to make it easier for people to get the files. I want others to enjoy them as I do. Even though I made them for me.

I probably would download big files overnight, but my dad has trouble sleeping, and when he wakes up at 4 in the morning, he plays internet poker. I have a free download manager called Free Download Manager (actual name) and I use it to download the bigger RvB's. I'm probably not going to bribe Garner to download a level barely anyone plays. (I don't have very much money anyway.)

NCF, you were able to get dial up for free? My dad is paying $35 a month for it. Although, dial up is the only thing we have out where I live, no surprise Frontier is running it like a Monopoly.

EDIT

Even worse, I am just outside the DSL range of the small town I live nearby (3 mile radius from the town for DSL, I live 3.2 miles away from town.) My dad is paying $35 for a slow internet, where if we lived .2 miles down the road, he would be paying $15 for fast internet.
