Red Faction View has the RF exe's.
Can we get some ideas of what map players want. I think map makers and map players come from two different worlds sometimes. I am about to release some maps and my major concern is gameplay. However I get the impression from reading this thread that the map also has to be eye-candy, has to be able to run on a 500Mhz PIII, needs custom textures, extroidinary lighting and neat effects (is that even possible?). |

"loser" to me I am more into game-play than eye candy. If you are going to be playing a level for the sceenary, than may I suggest taking a trip. Along trip of a short pier.
You can only look at something beautiful so long, then after that you have to frag or die.
I've had instances where somebody gets mad because I frag them while they are trying to look at a level. If you really want to look at a level, than leave the server. Don't waste their bandwidth and player space. You can alway create your own server to check out the level at your leizure not at others expense. Let's face it, people join server to play and frag other.

Well your 4 levels have game-play but only two of them are eye candy as well.
Oops hit the submit button to soon.
While none of mine are eye candy. I just don't want to spend the time on eye candy. Even though I have put in "eye candy" in must of my maps in the shape of women.  |

Awww Frank. Nobody says your maps have no eye candy.
Although we're certainly all thinking it loudly.
Actually they do have eye candy but I'm not allowed to stare at it.
But yes, I do agree with Frank. As great as some maps look, if they don't have good game play then what good are they.
Many have both but are so complex and big that poor slobs like me can't play them

DM-NC-Bedroom didn't have eye candy when you first join the server and at the end. But I fixed that problem yesterday. All it took was one simple texture change and BOOOM more eye candy. Just be glad it isn't "I" candy. That type of candy can be harmful to your health.

As said in the private PM, the RAR is fine its the FTP software I use, kept going crazy. was getting very annoyed with it, just asked Lord Seafood LOL!
Ah nuts I will re-upload it. Frank ignore the PM i sent you about sending it to you, I cant be bothered will do it myself, lol. that makes no sense but ah well |

I think all maps should have a good balance of Eye Candy and GamePlay but as we saw in the early days of RF we had mappers uploading maps that were just visually awful and played terribly as well. I think that sometimes we as mappers get carried away with the details but you want the player to get a good "Real Sense" of being there fighting for your life. Some maps have just given me goosebumps over the ammount of detail put into them as well as great gameplay. just my thoughts anyways |

If mappers are good enough to insert eye candy then surely they are able to have awesome gameplay .. I cant think of 1 map that has got crap gameplay but have outstanding eye candy.. This is where someone proves me wrong  |

Well, I had a couple of ideas for maps.. I started one but I can NEVER get textures looking good. Just one of the things that comes with being a noob mapper I guess  |

Exo, your problem is you jumped the gun 
Get the disk, uninstall complete fresh 1.0 re-install, then go into Multi, start up a server...
Then patch to 1.2
I had to do it that way before.
1.3 treats 1.0 as modding, due to differences that the 1.3 looks for. |

I don't want to reinstall.. -.-
It takes longer than normal because i don't have the cd my version is... "dodgy". There's no music and the sound is crap quality
EDIT
I re-installed up until the point it copied RF.exe over then cancelled it there - it takes about an hour to copy and convert all the tga's and wavs. I ran a server using the rf.exe then tried to patch, still the same old "Old File not found" error, and I know it's just RF.exe that causes it cos the rest would copy fine but it sayas that when it tried to patch rf.exe! Bummer.

If I ever try to create a 3DS MAX setup file for First Person weapons with biped ever again, please, dear god, shoot me. It's so much hassle getting everything in the right place, then there's linking the bones to the biped.. then all the RFBone crap! Ugh it's almost not worth it |

Relating to EDIT #2:
I've stopped using biped too, it's harder to animate as you have to do it all by hand, but if you setup right then you don't need to link the bones to biped. Just make sure the bones are linked to each other correctly I have to do this because, err my character studio 'doesn't work' so I can't use biped lol.
Exo I think you have the same RF I do, however my rf.exe was fine installing (music never worked though). |

Ok so the file list for 1.2 patch stands as follows:
README.txt, RED.exe, RedFaction.exe, RF.exe.. I can't get no further than that cos it crashes! If only there was a way I could extract the files from the installer... IF ONLY!
Oh and if anyone is willing, they could find out the rest of the files for me!
A-HA! I'm onto something. I opened up the PATCH.RTP with Notepad and the names of the files are in there. Now to sift through the tons of code and find the real stuff!
So far I found:
dedicated_server.txt
RED.exe
RedFaction.exe
RF.exe
README.TXT
tables.vpp
ui.vpp
I'm thinking the tables.vpp is the main culprit!

IAC was kind enough to send me his tables.vpp... and I just had a 2 minute blast. Of course, I got owned but I managed to rail somebody, even with my low FPS (got 3DS MAX open in the background ) |
