One map that I kind of wished I had taken a bit more time on was this one:

DM - NoClansTactics
I could not get the ski box to work and I just gave up. The friends I tested the map with told me the level was fun and that I should release it, so I did.
A little over a year later, I decided to change the textures a bit and add the ski box I didn't know how to add at the time and this was the result:

DM - NC-Tactics 2
As you can see from the screen shot, one looks better than the other one. LOL It's the same map but with less weapons. I learn that even though you can add 200 weapons/object in Red Faction, that doesn't mean you should.
Adding 200+ weapons/object makes it so that when you frag a player, the weapon he was carrying disappears, which sucks. I'm truly surprise that mad_ferrit did catch that flaw in his newest map. I mean as much as experience he has in RED. Where have I heard that before.
Now back to the release of first maps. I don't have any regrets over my first map. In fact it's still my favorite from them all. I love the game play on it. Fast and Furious.
On a side note:
New mappers today have many many more tutorials than people did when the game first came out. There have been advances on how people are able to create different things than were thought impossible before. Kiliad is one person/mapper than has brought some of these things to our attention and has even given of us instructions on how to do them. It's people like the likes of him that push the "limits" of RED that has brought us this far. I bow down to you Kiliad....NOT! I bow to no man, only to GOD!. |

Heh, NC-Tactics 2 I do believe that was the very first custom map I downloaded. Actually it was the second the first was just a room with 2 buildings in it.
I guess I could release the finished map I have sitting on my PC. Just got to decide what to do about the music. |
Trying to find old players. Anyone about? Drop me a PM or reply to this thread:

Quoting goober | I know, and its not my first map. Its about my 6th.. ive used differnt themes, most of my first maps were just a little bit of fun with me and a few friends
Im working on my 9th map now, which i plan to release
When i said 'Releasing my first map..." i ment releasing the first map im going to release, as confusing as that is... |
OK so are we expecting something really good then? Or will it look like it was created in RED in the same amount of time you spent on some fo your RF maps?
It sounds like you have everything under control so I await your first release with eager anticipation |

Awww golly gee whiz Frank. You sure know how to make a guy feel special.... and strange and awkward and some other really weird and disturbing things.
Anyway... maybe before people can upload maps they need to see a page that explains very bluntly that they are putting themselves up against more experienced mappers. It could include a check list of things to make sure they've covered the basic things like rendering lights, PS2 faces etc. I've downloaded maps that have had no weapons in them or spawn points. It would be nice to weed those out, or rather give the authors a little help in not making those kind of mistakes in the first place. |

Why bother with tutorials at all then?
Leave them figure it all out by trial and error.
Disaster! lol
I'm not suggesting a huge list of things to check. Just the basics.
Crappy maps won't get played and they will be a waste of space. It therefore makes sense to encourage people as much as possible to get the simple thing right first time. |

Couldn't agree more... I wonder how many maps there are on this site that have never made it onto a server rotation. I also wonder how many mappers there have been who havn't had a single one of their maps on rotation.
The sad thing is that the answer is probably quite high, and the reasons for that are obvious. I have a look at so many maps on here and i wonder if the author has even had a look at their creation in-game or not. And I am not just talking about newbie mappers, I am talking about mappers who have made several maps. It's shocking.
From my own experience if I've spent x amount of time in RED editor in my life I reckon only about 10% of this time has been on my released work. That is because I'd rather scrap a level if I am not 100% happy with it than release it for the sake of it. If it hits the recycle bin then all is not lost, I will usually have learnt something from the experience. I'd rather have 5 top quality maps on my map-page that have been played frequently and enjoyed by many, than 50 sub-standard recycle bin fodder maps!

Yeah I was aware of this, but the trouble I went through for that map and my lack of motivation to even open the editor in the latter stages meant that getting it out was better than it festering in my Multi folder. There's quite a few weapons in that map that don't show because I exceeded the number, but with it being such a vast map I simply CBA deleting weapons here n there. I'm sorry about that! (Still going strong with 341 downloads and 18 x 5* reviews tho hehe, you find the last RF DM map that has had that many downloads... I bet you'll be looking back further than a year ) |

Doesn't explain everything. I have seen a few terrible maps in rotations. Exactly as I've seen terrible maps with excellent ratings. Some maps would have deserved to be in a rotation but never did. It's also a matter of "Have you an acquaintance who runs a server and would include your map in his rotation."
Many crappy maps are clan maps and they are therefore played on clan servers. |

Yeah this is true I guess... That's why Frank had his own dedicated server
And on the other side of the coin there's been some top quality releases that have never made a rotation too... |

Not that anyone will be bothered but I uploaded one of my maps today.
ITs not my most recent, but it is finished and has been tested.
Ferrit did some of the testing |

When I get back RF tomorrow (The dude forgot the damn dvd he put it on today ) I'm gonna get to work on my first ever real release of a map... usually I just made arena style maps which hardly anybody downloaded and they all sucked
This time I have a real idea and I think it'll be quite cool... |
Back in RF... getting back into the swing of things! |

I still have alot of unfinished maps, but i'm not sure if I'll ever release them, well i will release my Paintball map(s) but i'm not sure if i'm going to realse any of the other ones because i'm not satisfied enough with them myself. And its probabbly to late to realease a map and get some gameplay on it. |

Well yeah that and the actual main reason I started to do it was because of cheaters. I gets tiring playing in a server (that you don't have rcon) only to have it flood with cheaters. The best way to control this was for me to get DSL (then cable, then DSL again ) and run your own server.
Quoting mad_ferrit | And on the other side of the coin there's been some top quality releases that have never made a rotation too... |
No read above. LOL J/K but I would have to agree, there are some great maps that not only look great but play great(with no lag little ferrit. ) that don't get played, which is sad. The most custom played maps to dated are the Microfaction series by W.R.E.C.K.S. himself. Which from what I hear from a lot of people that they are getting tired of the same things over and over. I try to run a variety of maps with different styles. But in the long run, the only way to get a full server is to run customs only.
Last night that was the only time my server was full. As soon as it switched to a custom map, I lost over half the players.
On another side note. Little ferrit, I like your first All Around the world map the second one has lag issues for many people on lower end computer, which is sad. In my opinion, that map would have been better if it was divided into 2 levels, instead of one giant one.
I'm not saying it not GREAT work, I'm just saying it could have been done on a smaller scale.
.
.
.
Now to Kiliad's suggestion/recommendation:
I have notified a few mappers that they didn't have:
1. Spawns point
2. They didn't calculate the lighting.
3. There map had too many ps2 faces and it crashed.
I've only gotten a few replies back from them. Some their email addresses we had were no longer valid and the email is return. In those instances, I had no choice but to post the file. Then again I could have just been mean about it and deleted the file from the site. The ones that have done these type of mistakes were from people I have never seen around in Red Faction or in these forums. It's a shame because I think most of them, like me, are afraid to ask questions in the forums for fear of being ridiculed. When I started mapping, there was only one person that helped me get started, well two but the other person never released a single map, He kept having problems with it. The person would helped me was [TF]Vixtran. His knowledge isn't/wasn't that great. I think he even got tired of me asking question. He even offered to put the sky box for me on the noclantactics map but he was leaving town and it was going to be a few more days before I could post it and I had gotten fat up with it and declined his help.
*Man it's cold in here. My hands are freezing.
*Goes and turns up the heater.
In closing, we can only help those that are willing to accept the help. If you had an idea of what kind of check list to use on the file upload page. Maybe you can do a rough draft and maybe, if Garner has time, it could be added to the site. But you have to remember, people are lazy (even me ). They tend to read as little as possible when it comes to submitting files. If you look at the FTP right now, there are a lot of files there that haven't been posted because people didn't follow directions on how to do it. even though they are simple enough for even me to understand it.
I feel like I am writing a book with all this typing. Now I know what the great writers of our time felt like. Bored. LOL |

Beatonator your map is corrupt. So much for the win.rar verses win.zip theory that win.rar files never get corrupt. LOL
Any way, if you don't want to have to do the upload page again, just email it to me and I can do it for you.
If you decide to do it, let me know so I can delete from the site, or else you won't be able to upload it with the same name. |
