Is it possible to make custom liquid textures or not?
I have asked this several times before and people have said that it is possible but they didn't provide any examples.
I have tried playing around with alpha channels and makevbm and various bit depths but with no success.
If you know it can be done then I'd really like to find out how.
Don't just say, "Yes it can be done" and then leave it at that or I'll find out where you live and mail dung to you lol. |

I think Bartalon made custom water textures for one of his maps.

bigblack, that's a jpeg file so it won't work.
It must be a TGA file or you lose any transparency because JPEG's don't have an alpha channel. Anyway, an image doesn't help much. I need the method.
Lace, thanks for the suggestion but the custom texture in that map isn't transparent. Its water alright but you can't see through it from above. |

Nope doesn't work
Its the same texture Bartalon used in the aforementioned map. It behaves like a liquid but i t isn't transparent. If you've above it you can't see through it at all.
I don't know what where that image came from that shows on the download page but it didn't come from RF.
[EDIT]
After further experiments I think it must be impossible.
I copied a default water texture out and simply renamed it. Using that produced water that was texture with the default grey grid as seen when you make a new brush... and it wasn't transparent.
I therefore assume it can't be done without a mod... or at least I've reached the point where I give up trying lol. |

Yeah, I remember having trouble getting it to work too... you're gonna have to try n make some kind of VBM to do the trick...
The way I've created different water effects is like this... Use the foamwawa.vbm texture (from Liquids) on a normal room effect and place a face brush just under the surface of the water. You can then give this face brush a No Player Collide Keyframe and put a coloured texture on it... I did this for DaC in DM-DaC-Zelda to create a real blue water, and a similar idea was implemented in my DM_RF_Manor map to give the appearnace of blood... it does look good |

It is NOT impossbile. You have to have at least 2 frames, and the textuure has to be a .vbm. You also have to manually include the texture in your .vpp, the same as sounds. I just find it easyer to create a box outside your level and put the texture there, that way it will get included with the map.
Hope this helps. |

I have had success with custom VBM's with semi transparency (ect ect) and worked as a "Liquid Room" from a Room FX..
Be sure to add the VBM to your Maps1.vpp or Maps3.vpp or wherever.. then you can see the VBM in your texture browser and in RED rather than just the default grey square texture..
Using Calm / Choppy wave type also worked for my particular VBM.. I will PM you Kiliad with a link to the file and you can get it working yourself and perhaps learn something from that. |

Well, it is possible i made one a while back editing the rf lvl marooned

The easiest way to get custom water textures to work is to name it as an existing water texture. |

Dont! that will get screwed up if anyone uses that water texture in anything else.

yea, you have to added it to your default textures vpp if you want to have a semi-transparent VBM in a map. (Including Water) |

It doesn't have to be a vbm and it doesn't have to have at least 2 frames... Just make you water texture, add a room effect to the map, open the properties of it click browse, find ur water texture double click it, click ok, set your room effect to liquid room, save, create packfile then add ur texture manually to the vpp or do what someone else said and apply it to a face somewhere in you map so it automatically gets added then play and you can see your custom water... and if you want transparency just add your transparency or adjust the opacity of it in photoshop then save as 32 bit and now you have transparency... and if you want wave effects then I guess your going to have to make a vbm of the water with the wave effects then do the same thing. |

Ok. Finally some useful suggestions.
If indeed it does work, this needs to be put into a tutorial somewhere because I've searched everywhere to find one with no success. |

Yes it does work ... with a VBM at least, i didnt reply here because i thought you meant just a .tga which i have not tryed so i didnt know if that worked.
Custom VBMs do indeed work as water and has transparency (i have made one that works)
Just use the Room Effect as someone said and choose the VBM you want ... now im just repeating what everyone else said
It will work with VBMs but im not sure about a .tga file |
