Hello...

Since I installed a new AMD dual core processor, I can't play Red Faction.

That is to say, I can play it, and everything runs OK, apart from other characters in Multiplayer games. Everyone else jerks around the screen, stop start stop start fashion. I've been in several servers and it's all the same, and that's all I can think I've changed since it was last working 100%.

Anyone have any ideas on how to work around/fix this?

Have you tried running RF in Windows 98 /Windows Me compatibility mode?

That seems to help with a range of problems.

I've heard that sometimes HyperThreading stops RF working properly.. maybe that's the problem..

Nope, didn't even know you could do that, I'll give it a go.

Create yourself a shortcut to Red Faction, if you don't already have one. Right-click on it and go into "Properties". Click the tab that says "Compatibility" and check the box that says "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and then select "Windows 98 / Windows ME". If this doesn't solve it, try running it in compatibility mode for Windows 95.

No need for a shortcut, simply right click on the RF.exe file and click on Compatability and change it to Win98.

Also, Red Faction DOES have issues with Dual Core processors, you need to disable Hyper-Threading or something of the sort.

i got this weird problem when i got a 6600GT for the first time. my charactor kept on runing forward forever, couldn't shoot ether. the problems where run the new card on Win 98SE, my friend had a simalar problem to and he had FX5500 with Win 98SE. seams that all newer nvidia cards cant run RF under Win 98 properly. so we upgraded to Win 2k. we didnt go to XP coz we got even more problems with that lol

Your wrong skvlad01, I am running Win98se on a pc with a Radeon 9600XT perfect. It actual has to do with the Nvidia drivers. Some of the older drivers don't work correctly and cause that effect. I assume you and your friend used the drivers that came with the Vid card installation disk. Those are out-of-date drivers. The latest drivers work fine, I am running a Leadtek Nvidia GeForce 6600GT on WinXP Pro w/SP2 and the latest Nvidia drivers. RF runs smooth like butter

Nvidia Website, go to this link and download the latest drivers. And a perk with Win98se is that you can minimize Red Faction You can't minimize it on Win2k and above.

Compatibility mode did the trick, weird really, but such is life.

Thanks.

You're wrong Sobe. Skvlad01 is correct. He said he had problems running his 6600GT on Win 98SE. He didn't say anything about ATI cards.

The problem occurs when using newer Nvidia drivers on OS older than Me (as far as I'm aware).

Downloading the latest drivers wouldn't have helped a bit. Downloading older drivers (sorry I can't remember which version now) would have solved the problem if he hadn't already upgraded to Win 2k.

I had the same problem a couple of years ago and it was a pain in the CENSORED continually having to change drivers because RF didn't like the new ones and newer games didn't like the old ones.

Glad you got it sorted Bernie.

You're all wrong, the problem was that his computer was switching the task between the cores ... (except for Exostatic, he was right ... sort of)

When you have a dual core processor or a dual CPU motherboard your programs will be computed on whatever core is available. Red Faction was acting Jerky because you did not assign a core to that program alone. So the program was being pushed back and forth between the two cores.

How do i know this?

Because when i loaded seti on my dual amd it was skippy, so when i installed it twice and assigned a core to each program, it did twice the amount of work without skipping

when you did Compatibility mode it set the processor efinity (not sure if that's spelled right ) to one or the other. (i manually do it though usually)

but, meh ... whats the difference, fixed is fixed.

Assaultman67- So what would be the exact fix for this problem?

Set RF to run on one of the 2 Cores?

And if so Can I do that to my intel duel Core?

Also if so how would I got about doing that?

T-M-I-N-E, I used to run Win98se on the 6600GT card before I switched it out on my gaming computer. And from first hand experience, I can tell you that it is most likely the drivers.

Not so, as Red Faction ran perfectly, I could run, jump, shoot, play single player red faction... the ONLY thing that was jerky was the movement of other characters in multiplayer.

If it was as you suggested, everything would be jerky, not just other characters.
