Yes ghostkid, however, were you one of the few that got it's secondary ip and actually used it?! I was and well.... You can see a server list, but when you try to join a server, you will crash to desktop

Hi Froggy

I'm sure the server will be back up soon, and if not, someone will make a new one or something.

Don't come on here with your first post trying to signal the end of Red Faction...

As long as my RF disks continue to install, and my friends and I can get together via IP (regardles of the health of the master server) then the game is still alive

Granted the game is dying, but you have come here, to the largest surviving RF community, with your first ever post and tried to signal the end... Sorry pal... good luck with whatever game you wanna play.

I play other games now moreso than RF, but if me and my mates wanna play RF we will do so. The game can be installed and servers can be made and found. Does that mean the end? I don't think so...

The tracker has been down a ton of times... it always pops back up eventually. No worries.

tracker has been down once to my knowledge which was due to power outage.. at least thats what we were told from admin@thq.com after many people wrote to them asking about it..

Without the tracker rf multiplay will be far from the same

With the news update from "News from THQ.COM..." thread, I shall inform you that it'll be a week.

Anyway, L4Y has how many RF players? If the master server ever went down, we'd create another master server (which has already been done) and someone could release a patch that would see this new master server. Also, in the meantime of RF's eventual demise, just save every server under your "favorites" next time the master goes up. Then repeat this every time you see new servers. Sure, most of the servers won't come back up, but its useful to have them all, just in case.

Further, though the end of RF may be near, it still is far off. A game called "Stellar Frontier", which was very popular in the mid-late 1990s, hasn't seen more than 3 servers on at once since around 2000, and hasn't seen more than 20 players online since 2003. If that game can still survive (I think Stardock forgot about it), why shouldn't RF? SF has been around for slightly more than 10 years and has seen a wide variety of comings and goings, mostly goings. At the height of my knowledge of it, it hosted some 200 players active in forums, yet only 50 or so active in the server. RF gets that many in a single night, every night.

If you must know the reason SF failed sort of like it did (aside from general just getting tired of the same game for 10 years), its because the game rejected newcomers and had horrendous lag. RF embraces newbies and has wonderous lag, even on 24k dialup. The only reason RF will die is if people stopped playing, or when THQ stops making money. Generally, so long as a game still has people on it, the site will host it. It is rare that a game will die with this many people, even though it isn't nearly the numbers we know of.

You can rest easy, if a game like SF has lasted this long, surely RF will last longer. Netrek is still around too, after nearly 30 years (started out as a LAN, was the first game go to online (TCP/IP), and still exists today). It gets around 100 people a night, and is a great game to play. Ultra-low lag (on account of the low-end graphics (think 8-bit) and the fact that the game only needs to transmit a handful of coordinates, the weapons and your ship's position. The client holds the rest of it (I've even played it on 12k dialup (bad storm that day, froze the lines, resulting in near dead connection, yet could still play and had minimal lag))), and a great fan base (not so many forums, but the server community is huge. People have their routines and know everyone they've ever played). Of course, it is hosted by non-profits and volunteers, and the fact that it is low-bandwidth using means that it hardly uses even a dialup connection to host a server (of course, you need special software to host, but its free, although you must know a lot about C and C++ as well as TCP/IP and all that (because it was written in a day when it was common knowledge among computer users to know all this. Eventually someone will update it, but it's unlikely for now)), so it's hardl noticed.

So, if these games can last so long, why shouldn't RF? There's several saftety measures in place even if THQ destroys the master server. Realize also that THQ's actual bandwidth dedicated to RF is minimal, as all it does is redirect you to the server. So, why should it bother their massive network? Even L4Y could host a master server, as I'd doubt it would use more than 1% of the average yearly bandwidth. Also, why wouldn't RF be the same without the tracker? Anyone who seriously wanted to play the game would surely know of the main RF sites (L4Y and RFView, as well as a few others) and would see what we have planned in case of the End (of RF).

Even if it isn't planned, how much would it really take to create such safeties? A handful of code, a patch for RF, some debugging, and its all good.

IP adresses can always be posted even if there is no server so there can be a list. So what if the the master server is down? this game isnt dying as fast as most people think. There are spells where a bunch of ppl get together and start playing again and times where there is low activity. Ive introduced RF to atleast 30 ppl. and burned them numerous disks and there is about 5-15 players ive added. Surprisly enough there simply isn't a whole lot of ppl who know about RF. If more are introduced to the game they usually come to like it. Don't worry as long as new levels and mods are continued to be pumped out there isnt a thing to worry about for years to come i think. As for the master server, well i can say is that THQ is cheap and lazy when it comes to electronic online maintence and the fact they havet bothered to aid the RF community or make Red Faction 3 or something should tell us how lame THQ is. If the master server truley collapsed then it make joining a game a litle more inconvienent but i bet another master server will be formed. We'l jsut have to wait and see if the master server comes to life again only time will tell.

yeah, i admit i got carried away but it should get the point across.

damn some1 with the same idea typed it at the same time...
that sucks basically the same.

New players that dont know of these sites would not be able to join in on the fun.. all they would see is "Unable to reach Master Server"

New players?
What new players. Brazilians from favelas who just got the game from the local junkyard!
A five year old game doesn't have new players. how could they hear about it.

I don't feel bad for RF. I have introduced at least 20 players to the scene, some with PCs and others with Macs.

RF has fast action with a decent variety of implements. Near limitless enviroments to battle in and accessible methods to customize.

One way or the other RF will survive until something fifty times better comes out. Perhaps by the year 2020.
I have suffered in real life for the past couple years, now its your turn!
