Welcome!
Post 1 / 3

I got a big problem in RF. I got P4 2,8 Ghz Radeon X600 and 512 mb ram
bot when i'm playing RF opponents characters are skipping and it is impossible to hit them. It is not a lag for sure but it looks like non stop lag. I don't know what to do :/

Are you on dialup? Are you playing on an international server (one that isn't hosted in your country)? Do you have a router? Is RF set through the firewall and (if you have one) router so that it'll go through? When you quit RF, is the computer slow? Does this happen when you're offline as well?

If you're on dialup, you could use cablenut (www.cablenut.com) to optimize your connection (works for non-dialup also). If you're playing on an international server, you should try to stop doing that as best you can (they cause massive lag, and most often the people in there don't speak your language anyway) (yay, I just destroyed 100 years of international integration in one sentence!). If you're on a router, set it and your firewall up to allow rf.exe full access to the internet.

If you quit RF and your computer is still too slow, its probably your rundll32.exe. RF uses this as its main library (MS created this dynamic link library to link processes together. C/C++/Java/C and a few other languages often rely on this dll a good bit). Normally, you only have one rundll32 running at a time. RF opens another one, and often the computer gets highly confused which one to send stuff through (yes, highly technical there). It'll start through a complicated (and unknown) process to deciding which one to go through (I'm making this part up, as there is no proof it does this, but I think it might be, as it explains a lot), but it can't make a conclusion (computers rely on rules we create, they can't intelligently (or even stupidly) decide things unless we tell them how to decide things. If this happens while you're playing offline, its a key indicator of the rundll32 error.

The most obvious fix is to end the rundll32 process, however this mostly doesn't work, because its still confused because when you end something, it won't check in with the CPU, so the CPU still thinks it's there. There really isn't a standard thing to do, except keep restarting RF (and destroying any rundll32 processes that are taking up all the power) until it runs.

To remove the rundll32 from the processes, press Ctrl + Alt + Del(ete), then in the task manager, look for rundll32 in the task manager or in the processes tab (if you have Win XP). If it isn't any of the above, do the standard L4Y fix, back up any custom maps/mods/huds/whatever else isn't standardly installed, uninstall RF, delete the RedFaction directory from games, reinstall RF and download all the patches (use the included update engine to get 1.2, then go here and get either the 1.2->1.3 patch switcher or the 1.3 patch), then reinstall all your custom files (check and make sure the custom files don't include any .vpp files that go in the main directory (such as tables.vpp, ui.vpp, etc). Then, if you want, throw on the RF Ded Server app and the spiffy keen KA-Rail mini-hud (it puts your rail in full-screen mode, even though the heat seeking funciton only works where the scope used to cut off at). Run V1.3 whenever you can, as it prevents mods that can possibly damage the game and its stability. This all should fix it (except for the mini-hud and Ded Server, that was for fun).

Seems that your computer has hyper-threading enabled, which means you have to:

1. Right click on the icon that you start Red Faction with and choose properties.
2. Click on the compatibility tab.
3. Choose to run the game in Windows 98/ Windows Me mod.(see picture below...HOSER!

That should solve your skipping problem.

Yes he was, although his explanations were lengthy ones which I didn't bother to read.
I think he was in one of those ranting modes again. Then again he only has 133 posts to his name. He might be trying to drum-up his post count.

Hmm and your are short. Are you trying to hide something by pretending that your posts are short.

When you have that many posts, it's really easy to hide it...
Sonar did any of the suggestions fix your problem?

Well that run dll error is something that ive been tring to fix for some time now. Im going to uninstail rf and remove all its folders and then reinstall it. any more help with the multiple rundll as app pop ups would be apretiated.

at times it opens 24 Rundll.exe s and kills my system proformance.

You realize that the original post asked for help by posting this:

OKAY E_Darkness I get all that but you know as well as I do it's most likely the solution that I posted.
The original person that started this thread didn't ask nor cared about the single player aspect of the game, since he wasn't talking about "Single Player". In Single player there are not other players, just bots.
Hence, my question:
How did we get to rundll errors?
Or
Maybe a better question would be; Why?

NCF Read Here!!!!!

I love you NCF! Read when I post, I might rant, however there's always key information in there. I didn't get to my position (at my real-world job) by dumbing it down when a client asks for help. I answer in full, and answer so they can understand. If that takes 20 pages of information, so be it. I'm not going to be one of those people who replies to a support question with "reformat it" just to get it done quickly. I may be one of the few, but I'm very proud of my thorough-ness.

Anyway, a good thing to keep in mind is that you have to cover all bases. He may only have listed his specs and said about lag, however you don't know if its system lag or modem lag. You have to cover it all. He may not have mentioned SP, however some people call everything opponents, whether SP or MP. If he would have specifically mentioned MP, I could have cut down on some of my questions.

The rundll32 error is old, however unfixed. I mentioned it because its the primary aggrivation RF puts on my system. With the patches I mentioned, this error isn't as often as it normally is (although it still happens once every 20 or so RF launches (where you completely exit the game and restart it)). This error overworks your CPU and causes massive system lag, which sometimes RF can mistake for modem lag and put up the little picture for a broken connection (rare, but happens). Even if it doesn't, he could think it just isn't registering on his client, so he'll look at the ping and it won't move (because RF is overworking it all, so ping updates won't come as often, and look like it froze the connection), so he thinks his connection died.

If you want to know what I'm compensating for, I won't lie. It because I spend all day sitting alone playing games or designing them. I haven't a girlfriend and mostly wouldn't want one (90% of the ladies around here are the "for-hire" types, and if I wanted that, I could go somewhere where the cheapest thing wouldn't be $200, and I wouldn't want to take the risk anyways). Thus, I apologize that for my lack of life, I bother you. However, I still like to thoroughly explain things, so if you started editing my posts, you'd be messing with the explanation. You always have the choice to skip sections of my posts, as I separate every point with a paragraph, so if you don't like it, skip to the next one.

Sonic, did we fix and/or explain your problem?

YES I would like to know if "we" fixed your problem too and what actually solved your problem.
Or did you give up on the game completely. The only reason I want to know that way when others read this thread(if anybody else ever does) they can find out if the solution/s posted helped or not. If they didn't then maybe you can let us know what other type of errors you are getting if any. It might also be a video driver issue. For instance if you player(in multi ) seem not to want to stop and you can't control it at times, then I would recommend downgrading your video drivers if you had a nVidia video card. If you have a ATI or any other type of Video card then I have no idea why it would happen.
In case you are wondering, I seem not to have a life either, sorry of that bothers any of the members here.
