Hi all,
I was wondering if anybody could help me with some info on VFX files..
VFX are used for Cutscenes and i wanted to try making my own and getting it into Red Faction... and yes i do have a copy of 3d Studio Max 4.2
Any tips at all would be greatly appreciated.. thankyou! |

Have a read of the vfx exporters readme file, I found it quite useful.
My only real tip would be try and keep the poly count low on the vfx, the files can end up huge and cause lag if they are too complex. Also if you're going to use particles I found that space warps etc. don't work on the vparticles ( well in max they do but they don't work in rf ), also keep particle counts within reason.
I haven't tried doing anything with lights so far - though I've made myself some falling snow that looks pretty cool, even if I do say so myself .
Model something, have it selected in max then export as a vfx file. If you don't get an error the chances are it should work. For a cutscene all you have to do is place the vfx in red then add a cutscene camera in there with a cutscene event setup etc and your done |

VFX animated meshes aren't used for cutscenes only.
Voilition only named the clutter list like that because they mostly used VFX files for them.
VFX animated meshes are GREAT stuff. You can do morphing meshes, moving particles...even particles with trails like rain, moving meshes etc. etc.
Make the game do things that have never been possible before with RED.
In the readmes some things were explained wrong, or these features just won't work because Volition had to drop them.
Example, Lights/Dynamic lights won't work. |

That rain effect you spoke of is what gave me the idea to use a vfx for the snow I wanted
VFX files are kind of my new 'pet' lol |

Snow? But snow flakes are round, aren't they?
Are you working on a mod? Haven't heard about it, yet.
Snow can be done by particle emitters of RED as well. The emitter of RED is a little more comfortable. But VFX has some advantages of course.
The big problem is that it isn't possible to create these for maps, without running mods with it
I think you must be working on a SP map then?
..If the bounding box of a mesh gets out of the players view, the mesh/particles will dissapear. So f you look down to the floor, the rain will suddenly dissapear, too. |

I managed to get a VFX into game.. replacing the invulnerability.. it was about 10 times bigger but at least i know how small it needs to be now..
I was wondering if anybody could explain how the Vparticle system works? because i have succeeded with brushes.. now if i could learn to add more effect i could really create something good!
So if anybody that has worked with Particle Emitters knows anything that might help .. i am all ears |

yah when using particle emmiters check the glow box, if you dont want squares
yo, is there any way to make meshes without MAX
or could someone teach me to make them, so i can install darkness's 30 day trial and have enough time to make them? |

you can create meshes in RED and then export them them as VRML and import them to MAX..
Im also pretty sure that you could get a crack or something for darkness's 30 day trial
EDIT: Im not talking about how to get the Particle Emitters working in RED, hence the topic title... im talking about how to get them to show up in MAX..
I open MAX and go to Particle Systems.. i create it and it just shows up as a square.. and i have tried all the settings.. nothing will work!! |

The square you are seeing is the spawn plane.
From this plane (or sphere) the particles spawn at.
By dragging the time slider to the right, particles will spawn...like an animation.
These particles are only shown as some crosses, cick on render scene and you'll see them with their assigned material.
It might take some time until you get it to work.
You might open the example file for 3DsMax. Bundled with the Red Faction toolkit. "Cutscene..." |
