What are HTML or PHP templates ? and how they can be used. The template just defines the layout - in our case HTML code that is used to position where the individual components of the page sit. Different CSS files/images make each section of the site look different. PHP is often considered to be a template engine although the PHP software 'Smarty' formalises a PHP templating engine. As soon as you have a website where more than one page uses the same layout its templating time.
