ITCH, this mod basically makes it seem as though the player is out of the level. It means guns are un-usable.
You can fire, and the muzzle flash lights up, but no sound is played and no shot is fired. |

Some dude entered several servers saturday. Cause we have
a real close network to several server on RF we found out
who caused the trouble fast. He played whith the c4 trick
to lame servers. After i banned him the trouble was over.
This happened before in 2003 somewhere, i doubt its the same
dude , but anyway .. best thing is just ban him than ur problem
is over.

Ok, as far as I'm concerned, the CC crew lost its rights to privacy when it did this. Felons lose their rights as soon as they are convicted, and we have enough evidence to "convict" the CC members involved. Thus, I consider their rights to be a non-issue.
Also, from how I read it, it sounds more like an actual illegal event, than simply harmless modding. My supposition is that they remotly modify the server's base runtimes (similar to the server crashers who pull the server info, convert it to Assembly, modify it, and reinstall the server with the new code (which is highly illegal to do in the commercial world)). Simply, they hacked the servers and rewrote their code.
This is an actual IT nightmare and is highly illegal. Whenever they are stopped, it would be wise to consult a lawyer about really suing them (virtual justice can only go so far, but when real judges pass real sentences, they'll definately learn). This attack is an infringement of Chapter 47 (Fraud and False Statements) in Part 1 of Title 18 (Crimes and Criminal Procedure) of the US Code Annotated. This is found under 18 U.S.C. § 1030. Fraud and Related Activity in Connection with Computers, a law proposed and passed by the United States Supreme Court (well, Congress passed it).
Read this nice quote: "(5)(A)(i) knowingly causes the transmission of a program, information, code, or command, and as a result of such conduct, intentionally causes damage without authorization, to a protected computer;". What this means is that they have violated the law by modifying and damaging the RF server code. The fact that they disabled weapons is obvious of this destruction, as the original code does not allow for the disabling of weapons in multiplayer. Having realized this, we presume that it is further possible that they have damaged the RF kernel, perhaps permanently. That being said, we have a nice case that could be prevented to a magestrate, who could co-ordinate between international agencies. I'd predict our chances of actually convicting them to be about 20% right now, however, if we gather their IPs, and possibly can get a court order to check their computers for this malicious code (and verify it), we have a 80% chance of conviction. However, I don't know how US law would apply internationally. However, I'd presume Australia would have a similar law. However, that is a non-issue, as the occurances have occured mostly on US soil, so they could be extradited to the US to face their charges. Too bad none of us has the money for a lawyer... |
