My hard-drive has NTFS filesystem. It was all stable and calm but from some day there is problem with this(file system).whenever i start my computer and switch to WIN XP chkdsk program executes every time, to check drive E: and F: Here is my hardrive info C: (win 98,FAT 32) D: (win xp,NTFS) E: (NTFS) F: (NTFS).If i try to defragment E: and F: it says - "chkdsk is sheduled to run so it can't defrag E: & F: and run chkdsk/f" but in shedule task program there is no such entry.when i run the code
chkdsk/f it says "Type of file system is NTFS"
"Cannot lock current drive"
"chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process would u like to shedule this volume to be checked the next time system restarts" AND THE PROBLEM PRESISTS
IF FORMATTING THE DRIVE IS ONLY SOLUTION TO ABOVE PROBLEM THEN TELL ME SOME GOOD FREE DOS PROGRAM TO FORMAT HARD DRIVE
I'm not sure I completely understand the problem and your post should be in the Computer Help forum.
You can't change NTFS to FAT32 without completely formatting the drive. FAT32 can be upgraded to NTFS without damaging data (I think), but it doesn't work the other way.
If your machine is sensing there is a problem with the hard drive, it will run CHKDSK each time. Its not in scheduled tasks, its somewhere else, buried in the OS. Are you letting CHKDSK finish, or are you cancelling out of it? If your cancelling out, it will keep starting until you let it finish.
So, you have Win98 on your C:\ drive and WinXP on your D:\ drive, right? How are E:\ and F:\ formatted? Both with NTFS? Or FAT32? The only way both OS's could see them is if they were both FAT32. Win98 can't read NTFS.

I had that problem once. When the computer started, CHKDSK started running and when it ended, i tried to enter my session then CHKDSK had to check the disk again, each time i enter the session.
The only way i found tosolve the problem was to reinstal windows.

Try actually right clicking on your disk in my computer go properties/tools/error checking.
Then it will say something about scedualing a scan next time you start your computer. Check all the boxes such as "fix errors" and everything like that.
restart. and itl scan for AGES. after than itl be fine. thats what i did with mine anyway
If that fails still try actually defragging the drive.
