Got a letter this morning saying how im being upgraded to 2mb adsl!

Yay!

Not sure how many people actually use the same isp as me...

http://www.demon.net/helpdesk/producthelp/internetaccess/consumerbroadband/2mbps-upgrade/

I think its actually BT upgrading lines or something.

Anyways demon are one of the best ISP's i rekon, its unlimited and ive only had about an hour of downtime in 2 years.
Meh...

Pipex did the same about 6 months ago, unfortunately our line at the time couldn't support 2Mbit so they kept us on 1Mbit and just cut our monthly price instead

Yeah i was pretty annoyed when bt done it a while back too!

But demon have finaly got round to doing it

It says on my letter i might not be able to go full speed. ( not personaly me but customers in general)
Due to the distance from the exchange?
Im dumb when it comes to this... What exactly is the exchange?

Ive got one of those massive green things full of phone cables at the end of my road, town center is literaly at the end of my road so im guessing ill be on 2mb right?

The exchange is where all the phone lines are connected to - the green boxes are just junction boxes that form the main 'trunk' lines to the exchange.

If the town center is as close as you say then in theory you should be ok... all depends on where the exchange is

Heh, that sounds good!

Yeah the actual main town center of clacton on sea is about 2 mins walk from my front door probably less if you walk fast!

Cant wait to get this!

What download speeds should i expect?
I get around 55kbs at the moment.

So im guessing a couple of hundred kbs?!?!
Only bad thing is i cant get faster upload speed so my ping in games will be exactly the same right? or will it improve a little bit from the faster download speed?

Xbox live rarely lags for me at the moment anyway...
Meh...

Ping will probably not improve. The amount of you can pull down the line doesn't affect how fast it goes...

1Mbit ADSL ping wise will be almost identical to 2Mbit ADSL over the same physical line.

55K/s? That sounds like 56K speed to me

1Mbit is 125k/sec, 2Mbit is 250k/sec.

24Mbit is 3Mb/sec.

Upload speed will probably remain the same, most likely 256Kbit... or 32k/sec.

I've been "degroupé". That means that my ISP now own all the wires until the local phone central (and those wires are much more suitable for high quality adsl than the previous ones). Unfortunately, i'm still 4.5 KM away from it so i'll have to content with 2.6 Mb. According to its advertisement, my ISP can provide you with a 20 Mb connection if you're just next to the central. From 4 Mb up, you get ADSL TV.

My ISP offers a service named "fast ping". It decreases the ping but can entails packet losses and desynchronisations of the modem, if your speed (rate) isn't sufficient.
