ANARCHY IN OUR STREETS
Riot Police clashed with G8 Protestors in a series of confrontations that brought chaos to Scotland's capital yesterday.
Edinburgh was brought to a stand still when 1,000 anarchists took to the streets in a day of violence and disruption.
Officers came under attack frin activists in scenes that realised some of the worst fears of the police planners.
As the fighting intensified, police asked city centre businesses to keep staff indoors and away from windows.
The violence came after and unauthorised demonstration was hijacked by protestors described by police as determined to 'inflict disruption and significant disorder'.
Among them were masked members of the nototious Black Bloc anarchist group which caused turmoil at the G8 summit in Genoa four years ago.
Sixty arrests were made yesterday and a total of 21 people were injured, including two police officers, although nobody was thought to be seriously hurt. At least seven were admitted to hospital.
Last night, the riots reached fever pitch when protestors were joined by local thugs. In Rose Street, shopping trolleys stolen from Sainsburys were used against police lines.
And, with more protestors arriving ahead of Bob Geldof's planned "million-man march" on Edinburgh tomorow, police fear that the huge numbers, combined with those intent on violence, could cause chaos today...
