Hi, I've been trying repeatively to get this to work.
I started RED, and went to help, read the "Hello Room" tutorial.
which is a basic hexagon room, with light.

I've done everything to the letter. and yet I still get error reading .rfl

ps: it's saved to user_mapssingle

any ideals or, past experiences will be greatly appreciated.

If its a multiplayer map, it should be going into multi, not single. Also, did you create the VPP? On the file menu, down near the bottom, is Create VPP. This is what the game runs from. It compiles all the needed files into one big packfile. Without the VPP, the level won't work.

not to be too picky or make you look bad Wiz, but the button says 'Create Level Packfile' not vpp, just so he dont get confused

OK here's yout little ritual for when you have built something and want to have a look in-game...

Assuming you have at least 1 room, a player start within that room, some lighting and or a skybox

1. Build - Space Bar
2. Hide all objects - W
3. Unhide all objects - Shift + W
4. Calculate Lights and Lightmaps - L then Shift + L
5. Save As: DM_, DM-, Levelname into your C:\Games\Red Faction\User Maps\Multi Folder
6. Then goto File ->Create Level Packfile

Then either press F7 (you'll need Disk 2 for it to work) to go in through Single Player Mode, or, if you've named your map in the level properties and checked Multiplayer Level and it's been saved with the prefix DM you can browse for it in Red Faction itself

What the others have said it fine and dandy but heres a wee pointer:

- if you save your multiplayer maps to the SP folder, then your maps will appear nearer the top of the of the list, just below the last default maps... I always do this, as its easier to find your own maps amongst the millions of other custom maps

I don't recommend using F7 to test your maps... it's ok for a quick look, but if you are going to have a run-through use Multi because I've come across some stuff that will sometimes only show in SP and not MP and vice versa.

Haha i just startred with RED about 2 months ago. Half the time my vpp builder dosent work. But if your a beginner create a level packfile like all the others have said, but if you ever want to submit a map to Levels4you it has to be in vpp format.

Also once you get more advanced in the editor you will realize that RED dosent supply you everything you need like sounds and stuff to make your level more intresting.

Also if you play directly from the editor (F7) then you wont have to reset your configuration and you dont have to type it in the optional command line <---(this only applies to single player)

In multi you'll see your maps there when you set up a game. Just make sure you put them the multi directory.

Also um yeah with the vpp builder comes a vpp viewer. It is the only way to get sounds, animations and effects into your level. But even in multi most of that stuff you see on the vpp viewer you dont need.

Also another thing i don't know how it was possible but i titled a file within the multi directory for my maps "Multi custom" and it works for me. I don't recommend trying that.

Anyway use the vpp viewer to get stuff directly from the game.

The vpp viewer basically allows you acess hidden files. Great for the editor. You will know what i mean once you plan to make advanced levels.

I figured out RED with no help except the help contained on RED itself (the help file). The best way to learn RED is with trial and error. If you want to get serious about RED and you play online, you will have to dedicate some time to figure out the editor. Right now i could have given you a 50 page help list on just about everything in RED however id get yelled at by other people.

There seems to been alot replys to your problem. Remember once you really get into RED its highly addictive. More than likely you'll have problems Like for me i have a light effects glitch. Half the time RED dosnt want to make a light work. Remember in the hello room tutorial where it said add a light? well for me the first 10 lights i put in a level work good then after that some are calculated some are not. You will know it after your 11th light dosent work. Other times your lights will work perfectly. I haven't been able to fix it. There are only a few people who have this problem. I hope you don't. It will make a nightmare on RED.

Well for now just stick to the basics and go to Redtechnologies it does have a great tutorial. Im sure it will help you master RED.

RED is truely an amazing program when you discover all its secrets its a jaw dropper. But its the level editor that allows you to have the potential to make maps like the makers of RF did

Sorry i made this too long dont get mad im only trying to help. Nexttime i will make it shorter. Get more into RED its awsome. Also go to Redtechnolies itll help with the stupid little problems just hope you dont have the glitches I do. Don't be discouraged by RED's problems. The goods outnumber the bads.

Red Faction is da bomb! (and so is RED)

What does the error specifically say? Might be able to help you out...

I know a certain version of DirectX doesn't work with RED (certain builds of 8.1b) on certain OS (happened to me on my old computer with ME)...

If its one of those ones that says error in C:\-blah blah blah that is where the error would have been with the source code when they were writing it. Still, they can be helpful if you know how to read them. Have you modified any .tbl files? This is the most common cause of the source-file type errors.

When i had errors looked all over the place then came here and found the RFtoolkit it seemed to rid the errors. Like there could be 1 of 2 errors 1: "this program has caused an illegal operation and will be shut down" or another where "directx 8.1b cannot initialize program and will be shut down" those are only 2 i know of. If its a directX problem you should go to the windows update and get directX 9.0. If the illegal operation error, either get the RFtoolkit or the version 1.20 patch (they seemed to work for me)Get the RF v.1.20 if you don't already have it.

good luck
