Ok, I would like to know how to set up a LAN network with a HUB between 2 pcs. For playing Red Faction and such.

I am using a SOHOware HUB.

These 2 pcs are NOT connected to the internet. If someone could tell me what I do exactly. I have the HUB and 2 ethernet cables. Please tell me if I can just plug each one up via ethernet cards.

ok it is possible to setup a home network with just a hub and 2 ethernet cables (assuming they all work.) I did my home network with Windows 2000 pro and im pretty sure you can do the same thing with XP if thats what you are running.NOTE: I have given the url to the picture incase it doesnt show up fullsize.

First go to your control panel and open up the network section and there should be an option for Local Area Connection, right click this and choose properties and you should get a window like this

http://img291.echo.cx/img291/8516/properties3qd.jpg

Highlight the Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) in the list window and then click the properties option below it to get the window:

http://img203.echo.cx/img203/9541/ipoptions3in.jpg

Now select the Use the following IP address.
-Make the IP 192.168.XX*.X**
-For the subnet mask it will automatically make it 255.255.255.0
-For the default gateway make it what ever the IP is for the main computer.(example later)
* this should usually be between 1 and 10
** for a home network this should usually be between 1 and 9
it should look something like this

http://img138.echo.cx/img138/4871/ip15ct.jpg
and ignore the DNS section ... just leave it blank

for the second computer go to the Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) properties again and repeat except:
-For the IP it should be the same as the first excepting the last number which should be one more than the first
-This will again autofill
-Have this as the IP of the First machine
so the second computer options should look something like this

http://img11.echo.cx/img11/8071/ip22zh.jpg

Make sure that you plug the "main computer" or the one with the first IP into the number1 slot on the hub and the other computer plugged into the number2 slot

Now start a game on one of the machines and then open RF on the other and check lan only and get servers and should be right to go and if you want to share folders across both machines right click the folder you want to share and there should be an option "sharing" click this and then click the option share this folder

http://img237.echo.cx/img237/334/sharing7ou.jpg

and if all goes well it should work
although i think there is a much easier way with Windows XP.

[edit]ok is it just me or does the site resize the images every now and again because it seems that it wont show all my pictures full size [/edit]

Umm.

Windows XP and networking is [Censored] easy.

Just connect both computers via the LAN cable.. then go to "My Network Places" and run "Set up a home or small office network" and let it... do it's shizzle.

Edit, whoops for swear... the censor didn't censor it out =/

ya thats what me and my friends always do when we LAN. if u wanna network comps on xp just run network setup wizard then make shure everything is set to the same on both comps except the comp name and description and when the wizards finished the network should work. although we usually have to disable norton before we do the wizard and keep it disabled... so if u have norton, disable it when u want the network to work properly.

I tried that once earlier with a HUB and it didn't work... What else would I need?

I got a Cat5e cable running from my main pc to the HUB, and an ethernet cord that came with this Linksys Wireless-G w/Speed Booster hooked up from the 2nd pc to the HUB.

I am running WinXP Pro w/SP2 and the secondary pc is running WinXP Pro w/o SP2. And my third just in case is running Win98se
