hmmm if the updated L4Y didn't delete the forums then look for a pinned up one in the Editor help area that has a similar title but its locked (no more replies) but if my memory serves me right then while in RED (with map loaded)insert the cutscene event then save then close RED then start RED up again and load up map then right click the cutscene event then hit properties (works 80% of the time *most effective way yet*) and your in but one last thing

ive played a multi map with a cutscene (ISM mod map) and most ppl thought it got in the way so cutscenes r best in SP i hope i was of help

Look here and look at the stuff highlighted or should I say colored in yellow. There you will find a bit of more help.

Ezar's method would be the first to try. But if it's still crashing and your map is large in size you will have to go with the tute on redtech [that process handles larger scenes/maps better]. If you open the Volition SP missions you will see that the maps are very small compared to actual gameplay maps. No matter the scene, there will be days when you just plain can't open the stupid damn properties for a cutscene.

There is also a RED mod that some fellow named bobo came up with. As far as I can remember [i lost the info in a redtech server move], it requires adding a new cutscene event or just renaming the existing one. It was a brilliant mod, it opened scenes that I had given up on.

Be interesting to hear what Diesel has to say about cutscenes, I assume there a few in REDDOOM.
If I ever get to where I am going, will I know when I am there?

Bobo's method is what I always use.
As trigger hinted they work best in situations where the draw distance isn't going to get very high.

Bobo's method:

Make a backup copy of tables.vpp and put it somewhere safe.
Extract events.tbl from the tables.vpp

Open the events.tbl and scroll down until you find the cutscene event.
Change:
$Event Name: "Cutscene"
to:
$Event Name: "Cutscene1"
Save the table then using the vpp builder add it back into the tables.vpp

Now open RED, if you go to Object Mode ->Event ->Level it's now called cutscene1. Double click to add it to the level. Go to its properties ( ctrl+p ) and it will come up with a generic properties box.
In the script name delete the 1 from the end of the name. Click on the event type list and scroll down until it says cutscene. Click where it says cutscene and it should send you to the cutscene properties.

It works about 99% of the time, in fact I've used it for all my sg scenes ( about 15 mini's atm ) and while typing this it's the first time it hasn't worked! lol

I have my two table packfiles named tables[orig].vpp and tables[cut].vpp so I can quickly switch back and forth by renaming the vpp's rather than moving files around .
