Welcome!
Post 0 / 7

I have been making levels for years now and know most aspects of the editor. I have made many levels with worknig custom messages. Recently (in the last week) I installed Red Faction patch 1.2 and now any level I create with custom messages they don't work! I might try reinstalling Red Faction and see if it changes. Also, I have gotten one of my old levels with working messages and saved it again, no modifications, didn't even move the cameras, and when i packfiled it with all the same stuff as the original, no messages. I might stick my levels whose emssages dont work and see if they work on other computers. If anyone else has experienced this or knows how to fix it please tell me. Thanks

The answer is THQ are weirdos.
Included in the 1.2 patch was an edit to stop Singleplayer levels accessing the files which contain all the custom HUD, and script messages. You can easily rectify this, by Saving it as a mod. the mod will accept the new Hud messages. Just Create a new folder in your MODs directory.

EXAMPLE:

Folder = Beats factory
VPP = Beat_Factory.vpp
RFL = Beat_Factory.rfl

Then when you goto run it, depending on which method you use. just make sure the game runs through the mod.

just add this commandline:

-mod Beats Factory -level Beat_Factory.rfl

I believe that is correct anyway. Hope that helps.

sorry for the late reply but I have been busy. anyway i will be sure to try making it into a mod and doing it that way, because HUD messages are crucial to my levels. I think i\'ll try making a mod and reinstalling RF 1.0

might also send off a scathing letter to THQ

Okay here's the scoop;
1. Red faction needs a Mod folder to be labelled the same as the .vpp inside it.
2. The .rfl must be named the same as the .vpp
3. RF 1.2 still won't let me make HUD messages work.

I had a bit of a fiddle, and after dying in my level I hit 'new'. It started the RF Campaign again. I then got myself killed within that level, hit restart and it loaded my level. Previously, it had not been playing my HUD messages. Now, it worked! But guess what? It was playing the bloody HUD messages from L1S1! This ended up ni some confusing instructions. Where it should have been "find a trapdoor" it was "where do you think you're going?"
this leads me to think that the patch has something against levels (or at least mine) creating by RED under 1.2. since my old levels amde under 1.0 work fine playing under 1.2, Im just gonna reinstall.

I've had it with the patch

Hmmm, don't give up so easy. It might be tough but it can be done. Download the No Shelter mod files to see how Trigger got the HUD messages working, or head over to Red Tech. There are tons of tutorials to help. And 1.2 is better than 1.0 I think.

To go off in a slightly different direction, try this;

Open up any RF level (custom or campaign) and pick up a remote charges. Throw one on the wall, then get near it and press enter. Now look at your ammo count

I wonder if this is yet anopther THQ- CENSORED up in the patch?
