RED doesn't cause holes. The mapper causes holes. As said before, setting a brush to detail will fix it, but its the easy way out, and then that brush isn't Geo'able. Fix it right the first time and your good to go. |

I think the editor creates a hole due to dodgy brushwork when it doesn't know whether that area is solid or air. It's just dead space. Holes are easily fixeable anyways. |

the one time I have had holes that I couldnt fix was due to over vertexing, tried to lift a face too far and over too big an area
I fixed it by reverting to my last save and placing another brush in just smaller than the finished area i wanted but i didnt release the map anyway cause it didnt get finished so.....LOL

Partly right tho, too many faces can cause holes, bending too much can cause holes, and face portals can cause holes if placed wrong or not cleanly in the level, there are a lot of things that can cause holes...
But don't forget the most important holes that we can't fix up that are in Red's buggy machine code because Violition won't release it.
So, what people in here seem to be saying is that the multiplayer map making in Red is alot more troublesome and buggy to work with or work around than trying to create maps for the single player missions which explains why all these problems cropping up with trying to get multiplayer maps to function correctly and a lot of tutorials for multiplayer to be written.....
Why didn't Violition just FIX UP Red and then released Red Faction II with a BETTER FIXED RED instead of just dumping the editor, is it true they had dumped multiplayer support out of the sequel?
This gives me a strong message that the errors in the red editor that are causing multiplayer and single player difficulties with creating maps because of the bugs, that they were not able to fix up their own mistakes and dumped the project they were working on because the Red Editor is not even a fully complete editor....
Speaking of editors and holes. The Star Wars Jedi Outcast Editor called JKRELIANT, this editor I didn't like at all. You had to put everything together like a Jig-Saw Puzzle, one wall at a time, one piece at a time, and takes AGES to build a room with JKRELIANT than you can do the same thing in Red in just a few seconds, but it was mainly designed for large open outdoor spaces while Red is mainly an indoors editor but Jk reliant is so time-consuming, I got rid of it and stuck with Red....
OK, now, what about this in level properties I find saying, IS OUTSIDE, INSIDE... By default Red allows you to hollow out of world and treats all empty space outside of your level as solid, so if I change this to outside will that treat the empty space outside my world as air to save me having to do an air brush to create air ?

im getting better at RED and working on a number of SPs and found the following things...
1. I've never gotten a hole in all my mapping
2. try using the split feature on brushes (helps alot)
3. (to guy trying to cut the pipe) delete the pipe and make two pipes and make it appear to be the one pipe cutted up or whatever ur doing 
4. its been a while since ive posted
5. never use the mouse to move ur brushes |

Interesting... I've not used the split brush feature cause cut brush won't work for me so I just use an air brush instead to cut, and why do you have to put 'end of time' I still don't know what 'START OF TIME and END OF TIME' means or what it does to affect the brush, what is this used for ?
Why shouldn't you use the mouse to move your brushes? When I load in a group, I still have to drag that group to the place in the map I want it to go because it will not load the group in the same place where your camera is, I cannot get the group to magically appear where I want it to as you would with the camera when you press B.
If someone knows how to get the group to pop up in front of the camera view instead of moving it by the mouse or with holding down the arrow keys and the M key, then it would save me a lot of hassles dragging it long distances to the right location.

Enforce just use the "{[" and "]}" keys to quickly increase or decrease the grid size for larger or smaller movements.
{[ = Decrease grid-size
}] = Increase grid-size
Groups appear in RED in the exact same spot in virtual space that they were created. This is actually very convenient IMO. It means that 2 people can work on the same map carcass at the same time and send eachother .rfg's to load in ( so long as there are no keyframes involved as they cannot be saved). Alkso it means you can do the same when working on a complicated map and you are scared about crashing or altering other brushes / objects. |
